LARGE RAUL OF COUNTERFEIT MONEY.—The
District Attorney of Lycoming county caused
the arrest, last week, of Henry Stetler. Sr.,
a id his son, in Mcli , ai county, on the th age
of counterfeiting, and found in their possession
about $6,000 in counterfeit coin, and a large
amount of metal for manufacturing bogus
money. They were committed to McKean
county jail. L., A. Ensworth, an extensive
trader of Williamsport, and heretofore much
esteemed citizen, has, also been arrested, char
ged with dealing in bogus money,and held to
bail in $2,000.
COMMON SCHOOLS ' IN PENNSYLVANIA.-WO
have received fron Harrisburg the annual re
port of the Superintendent of Common Schools
for the year ending June 2d, 1857:
It appears that exclusive of the city of Phila
delphia there are 10,956 public schools in the
State, being an increase of 259 as compared
with the last previous iepert. There are yet
wanted 604 schools to satisfy the requirements
of the existing districts. There are employed
12,475 teachers, being an increase of 118 over
last year. Includitig the city of Philadelphia,
the number of teachers is 13,445, of whom
7,924 are males ar.d 5,524 females. Whole
number of scholars, exclusive of Philadelphia,
541,247, being an increase of 17,493 over last
year, and 66,692 over 1853. Including Phil
adelphia, the aggregate of the whole State is
596,008.

Oars-1000 bush. Penn's sold at 37c per bush, and South
ern dull at 33c, Cloverseed continues in steady demand,

for neglecting to take the mail from or into a peg office; for
suffering it to be injured, destroyed, robbed or lost : and
for refusing, after demand, to convey the mail consequently
as the contractor runs, or is concerned in running, vehicles
on the route. The Postmaster General may annul a con
tract for disobeying the post office laws or Instructions of
the department. He may 'alter the schedule, and also
order an increase of service by allowing therefor a pro rata
increase on the contract pey. He may also curtail or dis
continue the service in whole or in part, at pro rata de
crease of pay, allowing one month's extra compensation on
the amount of service dispensed with. Bids should be
