ST. Ikana, Jan. 25, 1858. NO winter yet. Weather mild and pleasant. We had a delightful April shower on Saturday night. finebsess le extremely dull—the unseasonable weather unsettling every department of trade. The rivers remain unchanged, and not ankh of any kitid'of produce Is arriving. Receipts are very light. We now quote our wholesale market for Flour at $3 50@$4 25; Wheat 72@95c; Corn Zelic ; Oats 37(i038c; Barley 65c; Pork $l2 50@51.3 per bbl.; Lard 1 1 /I@7%c ; Whiskey 15e; Bides 9%. There is not much doing in Hogs—s 4, $4 25, $4 50 and $4 75 are about the ruling rates. The number cut at this point; the present season, is 95,000 head; at Louisville, Kentucky, 215,000, and at Cincinnati 365,000 head. Notwithstanding the unseasonable weather, our city, maintains her usual good health; there were but 55 inter ments In the different cemetries during the past ieek.— Fifty-five deaths out of a population 0f150,000 souls, speaks well for St. Louis. The Printers' Ball and Banquet came off on Monday night last.—some 600 citizens participated, and the whole proved to be the most brilliant affair of the season. The negro, who some time since killed his wife and moth er-in-law, in this city, was tried lent week, sod convicted of murder in the first degree. Mr. Hannegan, formerly of Indiana, but now located in this city, made one of the greatest efforts ever made in our Criminal Court, on behalf of the defendant. Mr. li. hie made himself very popular, and we predict for him a successful future. 800. D. Prentice, editor of the Louisville Jourrio!, will deliver a lecture In our city this oval:ill:lg.—Subject, " Pres ent aspect and tendencies of American Politics." It le pre sumed that he will not touch Plug Uglylem. Thos. Miss Charlotte Cushman, the world renowned actress, Is playing an engagement at Wood's Theatre. She attracts nightly large and fanhiouahle audiences. The fire-bells have kept op almost a constant giugling for the past two or three days. No serloun damage, how ever, has been done. On Thursday night the tobacco man ufactory of Kirkham A: Bro., wee consumed—loss about $12,000, insured for $.1,0110. We have now In active opera tion in this city, three steam fire engines, and from what we ran understand, they work admirably. There have been two or throe murders ceiumitted In our city since the date of our last letter. A man In the lower part of town killed his wife, and a day or two since two officers went to n hose on Franklin avenue, kept by J. W. Tysack, to levy upon his goods and eh:Odes, when some difficulty arose, and the deputy erinstnble, named Meek, shot Tysack through the heart killing him Instantly.— Meek gavo Inineelf up, stood an exernination, and was acquitted on a plea of `• self defence "—the evidence in the cane substantixtinx the foots. This Is as it should be, and a strict adherence to this principle will result greatly to the benefit, comfort and happiness of the peopleof Kansas, whose rights and privileges have already been too long trampled upon by the Black ilepubllcans of the New England States. It the itopuhlirau party is tro stronger in the North than it is in Kansas, we pity the poor politicians living on the hope of office In the future. Admit Kansas some time during the present session of Congress—with or without slavery—under the Lecutupton, the Topeka or any other Oonstitution—admit her with no Constitution at all—or with a dozen Constitutions, it ratters not which—admit her in any way, and Black Republicanism will he en dead, and buried en low that the sound of Gabriel's trump will never reach it : The people of Kansas are aware that they can change tho Constitution to suit themselves at any time they may see fit, and care not a straw under what Constitution they come into the Union—they want to be admitted, and we hope to find every Democratic member of Congress voting for her admission at the earliest opportunity possible, when we are certain to find :qr. Buchanan acting out his part in ridding Congress of this long agitated and troublesome question, and directing the attention of the nation to mat ters of greater importance. Yours, AN IMPORTANT CASE The case of Patrick Kelly vs. the Pennsyl vania Railroad Company was again tried in our Court last week, the vel•dict in the former trial having been set aside; by the Court, on the ground that the damages were excessive. The circumstances are briefly these Patrick Kelly was at work near the town, and his eon James?a boy about nine 'years of age, was sent to him with his dinner. The father sent him to town for tobacco, telling him to hasten hack that he might not be too late for school. To return to town it was necessary for him to cross the Pennsylvania Railroad, where it passes over the turnpike between this place and Portstown. It was alleged by plaintiff that the cars were unlaw fully obstructing the turnpike ; that the boy endeavored to cross by going under one of the cars; that the cars started without whistling, caught the boy, and injured his leg so badly as to render amputation necessary ; and the action was brought by the father to recover damages for the loss he sustained by the injury of his son. The defendant denied that the cars were obstructing the turnpike, or that they started without whistling, and alleged that the boy's negligence in endeavoring'to cross under them was such as to deprive hit father of the right of action. Whether the cars whistled belbre starting or not, was not treated as a very material inquiry in the trial of the cause. The principal questions submitted to tliejury were whether the cars were obStructing the high way, and if so, whether :the Company was relieved by the want of that degree of care on the boy's part which might reasonably i be ex pected from one of his years. The jury found both these questions against the Company, and returned a verdict of $3OOO for plaintiff. The case was conducted for plaintiff by Messrs. Scott & Benedict; for defendant by Miles & Dorris.—Huntingdon Globe. DELINQUENT SUBSCRIBERS. — The editor of the New Hampshire Gazette publishes a list of twenty-nine names, subscribers to that paper, whose arrears amount in the aggregate to $249,98. The editors of the Rochester, (N. Y.) Democrat state that during the twenty years that paper has been published, there has accumulated an indebtedness of subscrip tions of $30,000. There are many old estab lished papers in the country which show an equal indebtedness of subscribers to publish ers. If we were disposed, we could name one of them.—[Eds. Intel. ANOTHER SLAVE CASE DECIDED.—The Chi cago Times reports a case just decided by the Supreme Court of Illinois : " A citizen of Missouri brought a suit against the Illinois Central Railroad in tro ver, for a slave wlko taking passage in the cars of that company was taken to Chicago, and beyond the possession of his owner. The court below sustained a demurrer to the declaration, and the case was argued before the Supreme Court, which reaffirms the doctrine of the Supreme Court of the United States in the Dred Scott case, that the status of a negro depends upon the laws of the State in which the case is determined, and not upon the laws of the State from which he may come. The laws of Missouri do not follow and determine the status of a negro while he is in Illinois, nor do the laws of Illinois follow a negro to Missouri and determine his con lition there. In hands of Treas. Jan. 1. 1868 3871:1 76 • The whole amount of insurance, us above stated, repre sents three-fourths the estimated value of insured property. The amount of Premium Notes represents the rates charge able on three-fourths of the estimated value of property : The amount of losses to the Company for the year, is nine thousand. two hundred and seventy-one dollars and twenty cents, ($9,'271.20,) which includes the recent losses of John Sigle on his Cabinetmaker Shop and Contents, insured for $408.00, and Christian Overholtzer on his Barn and Con tents, insured for $825 00, and Wagon Shed and Contents insured for $175 00; a full account of other losses to the Company during tile year, was published In the weekly papers of the County, In the month of November. It is cause for gratulation to the members of the Company that the losses for this year are $5,500 less than last year, and when it Is considered that the estimated value of prop erty insured In this Company is about eight millions of dollars. ($8,000.000.) the losses to the Company have been comparatively small. It is, however, a source of regret and alarm, that nearly three-fourths of the amount of losses for the year, are supposed to have been occasioned by In cendiaries, and that in every instance without being able to discover the guilty ones. . , A few years ago, when a large amount of property had been unmistakably destroyed by incendiaries, a great deal of alarm and anxiety prevailed in the neighborhood, and meetings were called to devise some plan that would lead to their detection. Among other things done, it was recom• mended to the Board of Directors to offer a large reward, equal in amount to one-half of the property destroyed, which was done, but failed In its purpose. The last ivaessment of W, per cent, made in November, and the only one for the year, will be sufficient to pay for all losses during the year. The Board availed themselves the opportunity to borrow money from Individuals, to pay for losses, as they occurred, in order to avoid the names sity of making more than one assessment for the year; the interest of the money borrowed, being less than the expense. incurred in making an assessment. The Board would take his opportunity to again notify members of the Company, ho may 10500 neglected to pay their assessments, that the line for the payment of the same will be extended until • he 15th of February. after which time, delinquents will bop .alled upon by a Collector, duly authorized to collect the •ame, and they will he suldect to the payment of mileage s usual.
