The r< $46,000 behind. t lllinois Central Railroad, the most extensive single railway improvement in the country', made an assignment a few days since. The same day, the New York and Erie Rail road also assigned. Their great financier President, ttt a salary of $25,000 a year, could not save it. This company, it is well known, virtually failed several weeks ago. The stock and loans of this company have fallen off largely, but it has not for some time enjoyed as good credit as the Illinois Central, the stock of which a few months Rince was at the top of confidence, selling at 140. Now it sells at but 10 cents for 140 paid. Terrible Railroad. Accident. Syracuse, Oct. 16.—The mail train on the Central Railroad was thrown off the track west of this city last evening, in consequence of a piece of the road being washed away.— The whole train consisting of a baggage car, mail car and four passenger cars, were thrown down an embankment of twenty feet, and all; crushed. They contained sixty passengers. ! Miss Brown, of Toronto, C. W. was drowned. Mr. Bronson, of New Britain, Conn., was badly injured, and died to-day. Twenty other passengers were wounded, six seriously. The mail car and all the mail bags, except ing one, were burnt. The Flour market exhibits no signs of returning animation; standard brands are freely offered at $5 23 per bbl. without finding buyers, except in a small way for home use, and extra family from $5,26 to $6.
