jj |il¥.\ N of most invaluable information
7 /, f., M*i>\\ ' in regard to the same, and is
able to compress into vade mecum compass, the very
quintessence of medical science on this important subject;
as tbe result of the experience of the most eminent phy
sicians in Europe and America is thoroughly demonstrated
In his own highly successful practice in the treatment of
secret diseases in many thousands of cases in the City of
Philadelphia alone.
The practice of Dr. Hunter has long been, and still is*
literally unbounded, but at the earnest solicitation of nu
merous persons, be has been induced to extend the sphere
of his professional usefulness to the community at large,
through the medium of his “Medical Manual and Hand
Book for the Afflicted.”
It Is a volume that has received the unqualified recom
mendation of the first physicians in the land, while many
clergymen, fathers, mothers, phliantropists and humanita
rians, have most freely extended its circulation in all quar
ters where its powerful teachings would be likely to be
instrumental in the moral purification and physical heal
ing of multitudes ot our people, among the young, volatile
and Indiscreet, otherwise the pride and flower of the nation.
The author argues particularly, moat strongly agaiust
every species of self defilement, aud warns parents arid
guardians, in searching terms, to guard the young of both
sexes from the terrible consequences concomitant of their
Ignorance of physiologicallaws and sexual impurities and
Irregularities, whether exhibited by precocious development
or arising from the vicious and corrupting examples of
their school mates or otherw.se. To those who have been
already ensnared to the “paths that take hold on
hell,” a clear and explicit way is shown by which they may
secure a return of sound health, and a regeneration of the
soul from its terrible pollution.
It Is well known that thousands of victims aro annually
sacrificed at the shrine of quackery—especially those suf
fering from Venereal or Syphilitic diseases—Strictures,
Beminal Weakness, Nervous Debility, and the numerous
maladies which spring directly or less remotely from the
indulgence of carnal passions and secret violations of Na
ture.
In-vlew of those' facts, and when it is also considered
? that about 100,000'persons die annually in tho United
States of Consumption—a largo majority beingthe victims
of the voluptuous'iudiscretions of their progenitors.
* agreeably to tho Scriptural enunciation, that the sins of
the parents are visited upon the children, even to tho third
and fourth generation.—The Author, imbued with senti
ments of enlarged philanthropy, will scarcely be censured

TONICS WON’T DO !—They never did do more
than givo temporary relief and they never will. It is
because they don’t touch the cause of the disease. The
cause of all ague and billious diseases is the atmospheric
poison called Miasma or Malaria. Neutralize this poison by
its Natural Antidote, and all disease caused by it disap
pears at once. Rhodes’ Fever aod Ague Cure is this Anti
dote to Malaria, and moreover it is a perfectly harmless
medicine. The certificate of the celebrated chemist, J. R.
Chilton, of New York, to this effect, is attached to every
bottle; therefore if it does no good it can do no harm.
Thin is more than can be said of Quiniuo, Arsenic, or any
tonic in existence, as their use is ruinous to the constitu
tion and brings on Dumb Ague, which never allows a per
son to feel perfectly well for a single moment. In illustra
tion of these trnths I annex some extracts from a letter
Just received trom a Physician :
Georgetown, Ohio, March 18,1806.
JAS. A. RHODES, Esq.—Dear Sir: Yours of 2d Inst, is
at hand. The Cure arrived late last year and the difficulty
in getting any one to try it was greatly increased from the
the fact that a remedy had been introduced which was
growing in favor with the public, as being better than using
Quinine, —not knowing I presume that the remedy they
used to escape taking Quinine, contained tho Drug Itself!
This remedy, (known as “Smith’s Tonic,”) would invari
bly break an Ague, but it did not cure it, as it would often
return with renewed vigor. This one circumstance I deem
ed In your favor, if I could institute a test comparison be
tween it and your cure. Tho following is the result:
Three persons took your “Cure,” all of which were cases
of“Quotidianlntermittent Fever,” of mnay weeks standing
They had tried Quiniue, and other remedies, occasionally
missing a chill, hut it was, (as in all such cases,) Blowly
wearing them out, and laying the foundation for other and
ieverer maladies. I did.succeed in effecting a radical cure
of all three of these cases with your remedy, and they have
not had a chill since. Id all three of these cases the
“Smith’s Tonic” had been used, and would, as before sta
ted, break the chill, but after a period or two had elapsed
would return.
I think there will be no difficulty now in giving to your
“Cure” the advantage ground of any other remedy now in
uae here, A., Ac. WILLIAM BUCKNER, M. D.
Rhode’s Fever and Ague Cure, or Antidote to Malaria,
the only harmless remedy in existence, is equally certain
a* a preventive, as a ‘\Cure.” Take it when you feel the
chilli coming, and you will never have a single one.

J» R. STAFFORD’S OLIVE TAR. .
A GREAT ELECTRICAL REMEDY FOB PREVENTING
AND CURING ALL DISEASES OF THE
THROAT AND LUNGS. -
Olive Tar is Applied and Inhaled, and is sot Taken.
DIRECTIONS.—AppIy by rubbing where pain or disease
exists: theu <-over the parts with a plaster made of oiled
Silk, to which stitch a thin layer of cotton batting; then
cover the batting w ith thin muslin. Cotton or woollen
flanual may bo u»ud instead of the oiled silk plaster, bnt
the operations of the remedy will not be as speedy, nor as
effective.
Fob Inhaling.— Place a saucer over a bowl of hot water,,
(and keep it hot;) pour into the saucer enough Olive Tar
to cover the bottom; the apartment will soon be filled with
its odor, affording to the patient an atmosphere impregna
ted with tbe delightful blended aroma of
The Olive and of the Pine-
Renew the Olive Tar daily for Inhsling by the above
methbd.
Another Method of Inhaling is to pat Olive Tar on the
Oiled Silk Plaster, which being worn upon the chest, the
heat of the bodywill cause the Olive Tar to evaporate grad
ually, and as it rises it will be inhaled. The Oiled Silk
Plaster should be medicated with'fresh Olive Tar every
other, day. In acute cases, or In those of long standing,
both of the above methods of inhalation should be used.
By adhering to the above direction, the very worst forms
of diseases of the Throat or Lungs, if not speedily cured,
will be greatly relieved; while temporary Colds, Sore
Throats, Inflamed Lungs, Catarrh, Cronp Coughs, Ac., Ac.,
will yield at once to its combined corative powers.
STAFFORD’S OLcVE TAR softens and penetrates the
skin; therefore in all all Chronic or active Inflammations
it will be found highly beneficial, as it acts directly upon
the Nerves, the Muscles and the Joints.
OLIVE TAR OINTMENT is made by mixing Olive Tar
and Mutton Tallow in equal parts. This Ointment is a,
positive euro for all diseases of tbeskin.
Paiu cannot exist where Olive Tar or Olive Ointment
is applied.
STAFFORD’S OLIVE TAR does not contain any mineral
substances, nor any poisonous drug; the principal ingredi
ents are Pitch Pine Tar, and Oil of the Spanish Olive.
STAFFORD’S OLIVE TAR is manufactured by a process
recently patented by Mr. J. R. Stafford, Practical Chemist',
by which process all the Acid and Acrid properties con
tained iD the substances forming this Compound are sepa
rated without the use of Chemicals.

The Greatest Medical Discovery of the
Age.
Dr. KENNEDY, of Roxbury has discovered, In one of orn
common pasture weeds, a remedy that cures
EVERY KIND OF HUMOR,
from the worst Scrofula down to a common pimple.
He has tried it in over 1100 cases, and never failed except
in two cases, (both thunder humor.) Zle has now iu his
possession over two hundred certificates of its virtue, all
within twenty miles of Boston.
Two bottles are warranted to cure a nursing sore mouth.
One to three bottles will cure the worst kind of Pimples
on the lace.
Two to three bottles will clear the system of Biles.
Two bottles s'-® warranted to cure the worst canker In
the mouth or stomach.
Three to five bottles are warranted to cure the worst case
of Erysipelas.
One to two bottles are warranted to eure all humor in
the Eyes.
Two bottles are warranted to cure running of the ears
and blotches among the hair.
Four to six bottles are warranted to cure corrupt and
running ulcers.
One bottle will cure scaly corruption of the skin.
Two to three bottles are warranted to cure the worst
case of ringworm
Two to three Dottles are warranted to cure the most des
perate case of rheumatism.
Three to four bottles are warranted to cure the salt
rheum.
Five-to eight bottles will cure the worst case of scrofula.
A benefit'ls always experienced from the first bottle, and
a perfect cure is warranted when the above quantity is
taken.
Reader, I peddled over a thousand bottles of this in the
vicinity of Boston. I know the effect of It in every case.—
So sure as water will extinguish fire, so sure will this
cure humor. I never sold a bottle of it, but that sold an
other; after a trial it always speak for itself. There are
two things about this herb that appear to me surprising;
first that It grows In our pastures, in some places quite
plentiful, and yet its value has never been known until I
discovered It in 1846—second that It should cure all kinds
of humor.
In order to give some idea of the sudden rise, and great
popularity of the discovery. I will state that in April,
1838, I peddled it and sold about six bottles per day—in
April, 1854, I sold over one thousand bottles per day of it
Some of the wholesale Druggirts who have been in the
business twenty and thirty years, say that nothing in the
annals of patent medicines was ever like it. There Is a
universal praise of it from all quarters.
In my own practice I always kept it strictly for humors
—but since its introduction as a general family medicine
great and wonderful virtues have been found in it that I
never suspected.
Several cases of epileptic fits—a disease which was al
ways considered incurable, have been cured by a few bot
tles. 0, what a mercy if it prove effectual in all cases of
that awful malady—there are but few who havesoeu mor
of it than 1 have.
I know of several cases of Dropsy, all of them aged peo
ple cured by it. For the various diseases of the Liver, Sick
Headache, Dyspepsia, Asthma, Fever and Ague, Pain in
the side. Diseases of the Spine, and particularly iu diseases
of the Kidneys, &c., the discovery has done more good than
any medicine ever known.
• No change of diet ever necessary—eat the best you get
and enough of it.
Directions For Use. —Adults one table spoonful per day
—Children over ten years dessert spoonful. Children
from five to eight years, tea spoonful. As no direc
tions can be applicable to all constitutions, take sufficient
to operate on the bowels twice a day.

EXPLANATION.
The term AMBROTYPE, by which these Pictures are
designated; is derived from the Greek word Ambrotos , sig
nifying indestructibility, permanency, Ac. The Picture is
taken upon plate glass, to which another plate of corres
ponding size is secured with an indestructible cement, by
by which the picture will retain its origiual brilliancy
for ages; it will not corrodo by acids, nor be injured by
water or climate. It is bold in it&effect, beautiful in tone,
surpasses any thing in the gradations of light and shade,
and may be seen in any light. The public are cautioned
against imitations made on single plates of glass, with the
Slack varnish in immediate contact with the Picture.—
buch are not permanent, as the varnish must crack and
destroy the Picture.
AMBROTYPE STERESCOPES MUST BE SEEN,

The important fact that the many alarming complaints,
originating in the imprudence and solitude of youth, may

easily demonstrated; and the entirely new and highly

explained, by means of which every one is enabled to cure

UNRIVALLED
CONSUMPTION Aim AXili DISEASES
. OF THE LUNGS AND THROAT are positively cura
ble by inhalation, which conveys the remedies to the
cavities in the lanes through the air passages, and ooming
in direct contact with the diseasa, noatraliie3 the tubercu
lar matter, allays the cough, causes a free and easy expec
toration, heals the lungs, purifies the blood, imparts, re
newed vitality to the nervous system, giving that tone and
anergy so indispensable for the restoration ot health. To
be able to state confidently that Consumption is curable by
inhalation, Is to me a source of unalloyed pleasure. It is
as much under the control of medical treatment as any
other formidable disease; ninety oht of every hundred
cases can be cured in the first stages, and fifty per cent in
the second; but in the third stage it is Impossible to save
more than five per cenh, for the lungs are so cut up by the
disease as to bid defiance to medical skill. Even, however,
in the last inhalation affords extraordinary relief
to the suffering attending this fearful scourge which annu
ally destroys ninety-five thousand persons in the United
States alone; and a correct calculation shows that of the
present population of the earth, eighty millions are des
tined to fill the Consumptive’s grave.
Truly the quiver of death has no arrow so fatal as Con
sumption. In all ages it has been the great enemy oflile,
for it spares neither age nor sex, but sweeps off alike the
brave, the beautiful, tbe graceful, and the gifted. By the
help of that Supreme Being, from whom cometh every good
and perfect gift, I am enabled to offer to the afflicted a per
manent and speedy cure in Consumption. The first cause
of tubercles is Cram impure blood, and the immediate effect,
produced by their deposition in tho lungs, is to prevent the
-free admission of air into the air cells, which causes a weak
ened vitality through the entire system. Then surely it is
more rational to expect greater good from medicines enter
ing the cavities of the lungs than from those administered
through the stomach; the phtient will always find the
! longs free and the breathing easy after inhaling remedies,
i True, inhalation is a local remedy, nevertheless it acts
i constitutionally, and with more power and certainty than
1 remedies administered by the stomach. To prove the pow
; erful and direct Influence of this mode of administration,
chloroform inhaled will entirely destroy sensibility in a
few minutes, paralyzing tbe entire nervous system, so that
a limb may be amputated without the slightest pain; in
haling the ordinary burning gas will destroy life in a few
hours.
The inhalation of ammonia will rouse the system when
fainting or apparently dead. The odor of many of the
medicines is perceptible io the skin a few minutes after
being inhaled, and may be immediately detected in the
blood. A convincing proof of the constitutional effects of
inhalation, is tbe fact that sickness is always produced by
breathing foul air. Is not this positive evidence that proper
remedies, carefully prepared and judiciously administered
through the lungs, should produce the most happy results ?
During eighteen years’ practice, many thousands, suffering
from diseases of tbe lungs and throat, have been undir
my care, and I have effected many remarkable cures, even
after the sufferers had been pronounced in tbe last stages,
which fully satisfies me that consumption is no louger a
fatal disease. My treatment of consumption is original.
aDd founded on long experience and a thorough investiga
tion. My perfect acquaintance with the nature of tuber
cles, Ac., enables me to distinguish, readily, tbe various
forms of disease that simulate consumption, ami apply the
proper remedies, rarely being mistaken even iti a single
case, This familiarity in connection with certain patho
logical and microscopic discoveries, enables mo to relieve
the lungs from the effects of contracted chests ; to enlarge
the chest, purify the blood, impart to it renewed vitality,
giving energy and tone to the entire system. Rox 63,

• LESS WHALEBONE SKIRTS.—We take pleasure
in again introducing our Improved Seamless Skirt, as be
ing tbe most acceptable and reliable article in market: we
are aware that many new styles called improvements are
before the public, such as India Rubber, Gutta Percha,
Rattan, Ac., all of which we have if called for—but cannot
recommend them, as we have experimented with aud tested
them all—(most of them two years since.) submitting them
to the judgment of competent ladies to decide upon their
merits, and have found them from actual use, to be in all
important respects, decidedly inferior to our properly pre
pared Whalebone, which has been in use the past two
years, and for which has been expressed from all parts of
tho country entire satisfaction: and we have the more
positive evidence from our unufarge n-t;ul ir.»dc, aaiounl
ing to /many dozen per day. Therefore we confidently
recommend oor Skirts to be the least objectionable now in
use; possessing many advantages found in no other Skirt,
tho most important of which is our series of elastic ibrds at
the bottom, made from the only material that can be used,
that will recover its place when pressed out of shape, will
not roll or curl, is not affected by heat or cold, and can be
washed without injury. These cords at tho bottom, in
stead ofbones, which aro exceedingly awkward aud Incon
venient, with our own prepared bones above and a fabrio
manufactured by ourselves expressly for our goods, In our
estimation and tho estimation of thousands who havo used
them, produces a Skirt and the only Skirt equally adapted
to the parlor, the street, aud the crowd, giving a proper,
graceful and elegant form to a Ladies 1 dress, light, plia
ble, easily adjusted and in every respect a complete article.
The public are cautioned against all imitations or other
goods called Seamless Skirts. -Every genuine article is
stamped E. A J. Holmes’ Improved Seamless Whalebone
Skirt, and are for 6ale at 99 Market Street, Philadelphia,
and io the principal Jobbing Houses in New York and
Boston.

charges, no matter of how long! tandiog, or obstinuto tbe
case, recovery is certain, and in a shorter time than a per

afier the skill of the most eminent physicians had failed,
and the disease resisted all other means of cure. Tbe rem
edies are free from odor, causing neither sickness nor in
convenience, and without mercury or balsam. During
twenty years* practice. I have restored to health over sev
enteen thousand patients, who were suffering under the
worst forms of all the above mentioned diseases, whic h
guarantees me in promising a perfect and most speedy
cure. Secret diseases aro the greatest enemies to health
aud happiness, as they are the first cause of consumption,
scrofula, Ac., anil should be a terror to all nations on earth;
for the disease is becoming so common, aud treatment so
little understood, that a permanent cure is scarcely over
effected, as a majority of tho cases fall into the bauds of
incompetent persons, who not ouly fail to euro the malady,
but ruiu the constitution with corrosive sublimate—a
dangerous poison, a preparation of mercury—which, with
the remains of disease in the system, produces many of the
above named affections, which finally terminate in con
6Uinplion, aud frequently a rapid one; but should it not
cause deiilh speedily, and tho victim to disease tnurries. th*»
disease is then conveyed from the parent to the children,
causing them to come into tho wprhl with scrofula, affer
tiona of tho skin, eyes, throat, Ac., and again terminates in
consumption, and consigns its victim to an untimely grave,
between tho ages of six months and thirty five years.—
Self-abuse is another formidable enemy to health : it de
stroys the nervous system, rapidly wasting away the ener
gies of life, causing mental derangement, preventing a
proper development of the system, and disqualifying its
victim for marriage, society, busiuess.and all earthly hap
piness. Female Irregularities and all other diseases of fe
males, treated in the most skillful aud scientific manner.

the City and County of Lancaster, that they have,''at a
great expense, purchased the exclusive right to the manu

ever introduced into thiß community.
In using this Soap, the laborious and painful process
of rubbiDg and wearing out clothes and fingers on the

Clothes washed with this Soap need no boiling, which
amonots to a saving of nearly tho wages of a washer
woman.
Ladies taking in washing will find it greatly to their ad
vantage in every point of view, to use our patent Soap.
No dangt-r need he apprehended as to clothes being in

it that has the least tendency in • that direccion.
We have made arrangements with nearly all the princi
