In addition to the defined duties in prior or di nances now incumbent upon the Superintendent of the Water Works, he shall be required to make dally observa tion of the condition of the reservoirs with respect to their supplies, and report the result thereof to the Chairman of the Water Committee; to keep the prisms of the reser voirs, with the outside banks and walks, in suitable order; to supervise the laying of the water pipes, plugs and fix tures In the city,—and render such other services in the water department as the Water Committee may from time to time direct; especially shall he ascertain by Inquiry from consumers or otherwise, the use to which the water is applied, and report la detail their names and purposes of consumption to the Water Committee on or before the first day of March annually. And all applications for the use of the water after the first day of March In any house, building or other premises, or for the extension of any pipe for the convoyanco of the water, shall be made in writing by the applicant, and must state fully and truly all purposes for which it is required; and the said appli cant shall at all times frankly and without concealment, answer all questions put to him, her or them, by the Water Committee touching its consumption; and any one that may bo found using the water contrary to contract, shall on tho oath or affirmation of the Superintendent to the facts bo liable to a penalty of ten dollars; and if not paid to the Superintendent when required by tho Mayor, the Water Committee shall forthwith cause tho water,to be stopped off, and the Mayor shall institute suit for the re covery of the penalty with costs of suit. Sect. 3. The Duplicate of water rent shall be, aa hereto fore, made out on or before the first day of April yearly,, and the Mayor shall immediately thereafter deliver the same to the City Treasurer, to whom the rent shall be payable, at his office. On all rents paid on or before the first day ot June, an abatement of five per cent, will be allowed from tho amount. Between that day and the first day of July, inclusive, the whole amount will be required. After the first day of July, In addition to the rentj five per centum on tho amount will be required to be paid.— On the first Monday in September, the Treasurer shall re turn to the Mayor tho Duplicate, with a list of any rents that may be then unpaid. And to dispose of Bucb list, the Mayor shall immediately place the same, with the dupli cate, in tho hands of an Alderman for collection, with cost of suit, and the delinquent shall be deprived of the use of the water until the rent Is paid. ' Sect. 4. It shall be the duty of the Superintendent on or before the first day of May in each and every year, to leave at the premises of each water renter, a printed or written notice of the amount of his or he*r rent, with an embodiment of the provisions’ of Section 3d of this ordi nance relative to payment. Sect. 5. In lieu of the salary now receivable by the City Treasurer, he Bhall be entitled to the yearly compensation of three hundred dollars, from and alter the second Tues day in February next, payable.quarterly, In consideration of the additional dntios imposed by this ordinance. Sect. G. In consideration of the duties and responsibili ties of the Superintendent of the Water Works being de creased, the salary of that officer shall bo four hundred dollars annually, payable quarterly, from and after the second Tuesday in February next. And in lieu of ths bond heretofore required of him, he shall execute one, with two or more sureties, in the sum of five hundred dol lars, conditioned lor the faithful discharge of the duties of his station. Sect. 7. Permits granted for the use of the water for building purposes, shall run for six months after date, end thence for water used at the building, rent will be reckon ed proportionably, in accordance with the rates specified in sectiou Ist of thiß ordinance; and the amount charged for building shall be paid at the time the permit is given. Seot. 8. In case the supply of water in the reservoirs in seasons of drought or at any other time, should In the judgment of tho Water Committee require husbanding for the necessary protection and safety of the.lives and prop erty of the citizens, they shall instruct tho Mayor to cause public proclamation to be made throughout the citjr so far as the water pipes extend, forbidding the use of the water for pave washing, sprinklin g streets, or any wasting there of whatever; and any one disobeying such inunction, shall be liable to a penalty of five dollars for the first of fence, and be deprived of the use of the water until said fine Is paid, and for a second and every subsequent offense, to a fine of ten dollars and deprivation of water until paid. And if the Superintendent of the Water Works should in any case refuse or neglect to stop off the water after having been notified by the Mayor to do so, tho Mayor shall report the circumstance to Councils, who may by Jolat resolution for that cause, remove said Superintendent from Office, di rect the withholding the pay for the quarter he may have commenced, and appoint a successor for the unexplred term, who shall bo entitled to the retained salary. Aad if any person should procure a key and let the water on after j having been turned off by the Superintendent, he or she for the offence, shall pay a fine of fifty dollars with costa of suit. Sect. 9. All ordinances and parts of ordinances incon sistent with or supplied by the foregoing are hereby re pealed.
