of the U. S. on Thursday, informing Congress R 2ett er the Crescent, in Market, aleiv=iie :
that he hasceased to hold intercourse with Mr.
Crampton, the Minister Plenipotentiary from
Great Britain, and in oiling attention to this
fact he has deemed proper to lay before them
the considerations cif public duty that led to
the adoption of this important measure, and
he accordingly transmits the correspondence
on the subject, the most important of which
is the last despatch of Mr. Marcy to Mr. Dal
las, dated the 27th inst.:
Mr. Marcy says that the President has
carefully considered the note of Lord Claren
to Mr. Dallas, of the 26th of April, relative to
the enlistment question, and has directed him
to present his views thereon, for the purpose
of having them communicated to the British
government.
The President is much gratified by the con
ciliatory spirit of Lord Clarendon's note, and
by the desire which he expresses to adjust ex
isting difficulties, and preserve and strengthen
the friendly relations between the two govern
ments. The disclaimer of any intention to
violate the laws of -the United States, and the
expression of regret that, contrary to the in
t ention and direction of - the British govern
ment, there has been such infringement, are
satisfactory to the President, and the main
complaint, so far as respects her Majesty's
government is thus removed. But the Presi
dent extremely regrets that he cannot concur
with Lord Clarendon in the'opinion that Mr.
Crampton and the British consuls at New
York, Philadelphia end Cincinnati, are not
implicated in these proceedings. Regarding
those who have no connection with this gov
ernment', he has nothing to ask of her Majes
ty's government ; but in the cases of the indi
vidual's mentioned, he deems it proper that
their relations should cease. In making this
step, however, he dues not intend to make
any interruption in the diplomatic relations
between the United States :ind Great Britain,
but, un the contrary, is desirous'of keeping the
two countries upon a friendly footing.
Mr. Crampton's withdrawal was asked ex
pressly on the grounds of his connection with
the enlistment, which had rendered him an
unacceptable Representative of Iler Br r itannic
Majesty near this government, and fur the
same reason the withdrawal of these Consuls
was likewise requestiid. These officers are all,
as this government still believe, implicated in
a violation of the laws of the United States,
contrary to ,the reiterated instructions of
their own government. This complicity did
not rest solely on the testimony of Strobel
and ilertz, but upon original letters from Mr.
Crampton and others ,

By the arrival °ldle steamship Granada, at
New Orleans, we have important news from
Central America and our Pacific Territories.
It is reported that the Costa Rican invaders of
Nicaragua had evacuated the country. They
bitterly complain of having been deceived.—
Where••they expected to find a population
ready to receive them with open arms, they
met with an unyielding foe. The loss of
the Costa Ricans at the battle of Rivas
amounted to six hundred and fifty in killed
and wounded. Walker lost about one hun
dred men. In California the markets were
without change. The Illinois, on her way to
this port, Ps nearly two millions of treasure
on freight. In Mariposa county the Ameri
cans had killed twenty Mexicans and Chilians,
and ordered all the Chinese, Mexicans, Peru
vians and Chilians to leave. The pretext for
this atrocious conduct was that several Amer
imns had been murdered by the foreigners.—
The Indian war in Oregon and Washington
continued, and the savages had been defeated
in several battles. There is great complaint
among 'the troops of the neglect of the Com
missariat department.

DEPARTSIENT OF STATE,
WASHINGTON, May 28, 1856.
Sir :—The President of the United States
has directed me to announce to you his deter
mination to discontinue further intercourse
with you as Ber Majesty's diplomatic repre
sentative to the n'overnment of the United
States. The reas ' cilik;hich have compelled
him to take this step t this time have been
communicated to your government. I
avail myself of this occasion to add, that
due attention will be cheerfully given to any
communications addressed to this department
from Her Majesty's government affecting the
relations between Great Britain and the Uni
ted States which may be forwarded to this
government through any other channel.—
Should it be your pleasure to retire from the
United States, the President directs me to fur
nish you with the usual facilities for that pur
pose. I consequently enclose herewith the
passport in such cases. I avail myself of this
opportunity to renew to you, sir, the assur

PROFESSOR WOOD'S HAIR RESTORATIVE.—This
preparation, although less than two years before the pub
lic, owing so its wonderful effects upon the human hair and
scalp, has already obtained u celebrity and sale perfectly
unparallelled. It has without the ordinary appliance used
for such purposes, won its way, and been heartily welcom
ed to most of the cities arid to wns - iu the United Statue the
Canadas, and the West India Islands. Nor is this result
surprising, when it is remembered that it popularity is
based upon its merits, solely as established by actual tools.
That this preparation will actually RESTORE GRAY lIAIR
TO ITS NATI:RAI...COLOR, produce a luxuriant growth
upon the heads of the bald, prevent the hair from falling
off, and when used as a toilet article, produce a continual
dose of the natural fluids, and thus render the hair soft.
glossy and wavy, destroy diseases of the scalp, and expel
dandruff, the certificates of distinguished gentlemen and
ladles, in every part of the country who lisve tried it, sod
therefore speak what they know, most fully attest.
Mixon,. Worcester Co.. Mass., Nov. 13th, 1555.
Prof. 0. J. Wood—Dear Sir; I take pleasure in bearing
voluntary testimony to the magic effects of your wonderful
Hair Restorative. As far back as 1536 my hair commenced
falling oft, until the top of my scalp became bald and smooth
as glass,
and it has continued to fall for a great many years,
notwithstandiug 1 have used many celebrated preparations
for its restoration. Seeing your advertisement, 1 was in
duced to give your article a trial, and to my utter astonish
ment, I found after a few opplicatious that my hair became
firmly set and assumed a very glossy and beautiful appear
ance; and, by the time I had used a quart bottle full, my
bald head was covered over with a young and vizrrous
growth of hair, which is now fre/11 0111& CO Iwo inches in
length, and growing very fast.
lours truly, GLICRT GOODRICH.
From the Boston Herald.
SOMETHING WORTH KNOWING !—By using Profes9or Wood's
Hair Restorative, gray Hair can be permanently restored to
itsoriginal color. The subjoined certificate was received from
Johnson S Stone, Hardener, Me., and is but one of the
many instances that are daily coming to our knowledge of
its wonderful effects. It is no longer proldematic, but
self-evident truth, as hundreds can testify.
GARDINER, Me., June 22d, 1855.
Mr. H. Dns—Dear Sir: I have used two bottles of Prof.
Wood's Hair Restorative, and can truly say ills the great
est discovery of the age fur restoring and changing the Hair.
Before using it I wns a nom of seventy. 3ly hair has now
attained its original color. You can recommend it to the
world without the least fear, as my case was one of the
worst hind. Yours. respectfully. .
I have used Prof. 0. J. ‘Vocßl's Hair Restorative, and have
admired its wonderful effect. My hair was becoming, as I
thought, prematurely gray, but by the use of his Reston
tire It has resumed its original color, and I have no doubt,
permanently so. SIDNEY BREESE,
Ex :Senator United States.
The Greatest Discovery of the Age.—lt seldom occurs,
that we notice, under any circumstances, patent medicines,
restoratiret, or anything of the kind, for we have a prein.
dice against mot of them. But candor compels us to in.
rite attention to the advertisement of Prof. Wood's Hair
Restorative. We are too juvenile to require anything of
the kind, but some instances of its use have come to our
knowledge which almost assure us that it is a sovereign
remedy against the hair becoming prematurely gray. It is
not a'• Hair Dye:" but upon its application as directed, the
effect is produced on the skin, which brings out the origin
nal native colored hair, without stLffness, cud gives it a glos
syand natural appearance. We have seen persons who have
used it, and they are much pleased with it. —Missouri Re
