The sentence was lung, but able, ap propriate and full of earnest appeals to the heart, the head and the conscience of the wretched culprit. He exhausted language and ingenuity in an attempt to arouse him to a realizing sense of the enormity of his 11101I strous crime and its awful conmegoeuces, but his efforts utterly failed. While all in the court room were powerfully moved—not aim even to tears—yet Fitzgerald stood unmoved throughout the trying scene.' Not a muscle moved. His countenance was bold, hardened in every feature, and his eye cold as marble. When asked if he had anything to say why the last direful penalty of the law should not be pass - Td upon hini, he promptly, and in a low voice, replied: " No, sir : not a word 'V' and when the judge having sentenced him to be hung on Friday, the 28th of March, con cluded with an earnest appeal to Almighty God in his behalf, Fitzgerald said : lam much obliged to you, sir!" and took his seat, Utterly unmoved and apparently uncon cerned." EXECUTION OF ARMBRUSTER. — Jacob ATM bruster, who was convicted of the murder of his wife, in Bucks county, last summer, was hung in the Jail yard, at Doylestown, on Fri day last. He maintained his composure to the last, pretesting his innocence, and appeal ing to God against his sentence. Ile ascended the scaffold with a firm step, accompanied by his son, who wept bitterly at the dreadful sit uation of his father ; but after the fatal cord had been adjusted, the prisoner refused to shake hands even with his son at parting, and .would not permit prayers to be offered up in his behalf, turning frequently to the Sheriff, and exclaiming, with energy, "You dare not hung me ! You know you dare not !" This painful scene, however, continued but a few minutes; the drop fell, and the doomed man was launched into eternity without a struggle, His last words were, "I want no Judge bu t God !" His neck was not broken by the fall. NEBRASKA TERRITORY.—The message of Governor Izard to the people of Nebraska gives a gratitying account of public and pri vate prosperity in the Territory. Every branch of industry has received, and continues to:receive a liberal reward, and the inhabitants are prosperous and happy in a degree hereto fore unexampled in the history of the settle ment and organization of former Territories. Business of every kind is in a healthy condi tion; prosperous and populous towns and cit ies are springing up as by magic all along the eastern border, and at favorable points to the westward ; and the beautiful and fertile prai ries are fast becoming converted into produc tive fields, giving good promise of a rich re ward to the toiling husbandman. Speaking of this glowing picture, the Michigan State Journal says : "In view of the fact that the Nebraskians are wisely and judiciously exercising their prerogative of making their own laws, we submit whether it would not indicate good sense fur all outsiders to mind their own bus- mar-Kossuneacconuag to reports, is preparing ro , iness, and let the Nebraskians attend to theirti revo_u_onary attempt in Europe as soon as the prope r own. There are many subjects connected with internal im provements which I reenmmend to your at tentive consideration. The difference which exists in several important particulars be tween the commercial laws of Scotland and those of the other parts of the United King dom, has occasioned inconvenience to a large portion of my subjects engaged in trade.— Measures will be proposed to you for remedy ing this evil. Measures will also be proposed to you for improving the laws relating to part nership by simplifyiug these laws, and thus rendering inure easy the employment of capi tal in commerce. The system under which merchant shipping is liable to pay-local dues and passing tolls has been the subject of much enmplaint. Measures will be priTosetl to you for affording relief in regard to these matters. Other important measures fur im proving the law in Great Britain and in Ire land will be proposed to you, which, I doubt not, will receive your attentive consideration. Upon these and all other matters upon which you may deliberate, I fervently pray that the blessings of Di%ine Providence may favor your councils, and guide them to the promotion of the great object of my unwavering solicitude —the welfare and happiness of my people. —,t itari a SAm: or THE PUBLIC WORKS.—The bill in troduced into the State Senate, a few days since, by Mr. Jamison, for the sale of the pub lic works of the State, divides the line into five sections, as follows: Ist—Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad 2d—Canal from Columbia to Junction. 31—Canal from Junction to Hollidaysburg. dtn—Allegheny Portage Railroad. sth—Canal from Johnstown to Pittburgh. Upon Prof. 0. J.
