TRH ENCHANTIyESS.
She bound him like a magi chain—
She wrapped him in a spell—
She wreathed a chain around her heart
That nought could ero dispel!
A charm that shed rich gleams of light
O'er all life's gloomy and tears—
A spell that thrilled his soul with joy
Through long and blissful years !
They met in pleasure's radiant halls,
Where youth and beauty meet,
With bounding hearts and beaming eyes
And swiftly flying feet'
Pule gleaming pearls and flashing gems
And fragrant 110Werld were there ;
And music 'e sweetest, richest miles
Stole through the perfumed air
They met—he caught one chilling glance
From her dark, earnest eyes—
die saw the blush steal o'er her cheek—
lle heard her breathe the sigh !
And when her voice gushed forth in song.
And fell upon his oar,
lie hushed the beating of his heart,
Lest he might fail to hear.
They met—and all unconsciously,
An that enchanting hour,
the wove, with blush, and smile and song
A spell of magic power
lie 81111 , the light upon her brow—
lie heard the witching strain—
The heart he long bud boasted free,
Henceforth must wear a chain
THE LAKE 01' FIRE

.• but the whole had. not yet been suet. Nut hay
ing been able to reach the lake from below we re•
solved to approach and look upon it train above.—
In the face of a cold, driving rale storm, Mr. Hus
sey, (my very agreeable traveling companion,) the
guide end myself set out on foot for a walk of live
miles to a distant point. The whole body of the
crater was full el steam and smoke, and doubts were
expressed whether we could get a view of the• bot
tom , but on we went, trusting for better things, in
which we were disappointed
" flaw° reaching the bank snore the lake, and
while it was hid from view, we could distinctly hear
the sound of its splashing waves, so like, and yet so
unlike the breaking of the surf upon the ocean's
ehore.;There wait the mingling of the sound of rush
ing waters with its own Quad, heavy, missing one.
A moment more and we ::toed upon the
. brow of the
perpendicular well of a thousand feet, and directly
above the lake, and there we sat ourselves silently
upon the rocks to look down upon it. It differed
from all we hail seen before. The larid light of the
previous night was gone, and the beautiful pictures
which helped to make up that scene were absent ;
buCin their stead were others more appalling and
full of terrors. Here in close proximity and plain
eight was 'a lake burning with fire,' may be un
quenchable, and it only required the wails of the
tormented to complete the dread description of
hell.
The lake was in size some half a mile in diameter,
autd , one-and-a-half in circumference, nearly round;
its surface was raging with great violence, and was,
when unbroken, black and dark, but when agitated
violently, as the centre was continually, its color
was blood red. Every few moments the lava would
be thrown up at least fifty feet in jets, and then, as
if lashed into fury, great naves would chase each
other. boiling and foaming red with heat, if not in
anger. Strange sounds saluted the ear, as well as
strange sights the eye. Occasionally loud reports
were heard; then the peculiar sound of escaping
steam at once, as if a thousand boilers were blowing
off their pent up steam a . t. unCe, 11.1.1 d the dead, heavy
sound of the disturhed lava was eoutiuuous. Take
it altogether it was decidedly the must startling
scone I had ever witnessed.
Just beyond the burning lake was the great cone,
now black as night, from which the intensely bril
liant light had shunts the night before. Tit chimney,
indeed, for the lire beneath. Its proportions were
gigantic, its .capacity immense, and it was belching
Mali at intervals vast volumes of smoke and steam,
made up a grand but an awful picture, impossible to
describe but never to be forgotten.
On our return from the view of the lake we passed
the sulphur banks. They are located about a quar
ter of a mile from the upper batik of the crater, on a
slightly depressed plain or valley. They are less
than half a mile in length and aro full or holes,
through which hot steam is issuing, and about
which beautiful crystals of sulphur are hanging.—
In securing seine specimens I burnt my lingers in
the steam. The natives call this bank of sulphur
Pele's Dunghill.
All along the bank and in some places half a mac
distant trout the crater are holes sod fissures in the
rocks, frtantivhich steam is constantly issuing burn
ing hut. The ground near the crater is strewn all
over with Polo's hap—a fine thread of glass or melted
sand thrown up from the volcano and blown into
minute attenuated threads by the „wind. They are
in color brown and much resemble "auburn" hair;
and hence the name. They surer the ground like
cobwebs but are very brittle, and it requires care to
gather them up.
ziItISIEUCRAC Y
The most prominent evil resulting from a false
system of society is the low estimate that those who
comprise our high society judge of the meehanic.—.
The mechanic—he who helps to form the noblest
class of our country—that class from which radiates
the real genius of the nation—w..ose whole life and
efforts are fur the improvement and benefit of his
fellow men—is regarded as unlit to enter what is
called -polite society. Why is this Is it because
he who nobly earns his bread by the sweat of his
brow, and thus fulfils the first groat law of (dod and
nature,is nut capable a intolicotual enjoyment—is
insensible to the wonders of science—not competent
to walk in the paths of learning
Come to a kingly residence in sunny Franco. it
is evening. See how the palace windows gleam with
liquid fire. Let us enter by this broad marble
staircase. What a regal sight is hero ! Tho pomp
and pride of the richest court on this fair earth is
hero assembled. Rings, Queens, Princes and Lords,
glittering in diamonds and velvets, are moving to
and fro. The glare of a thousand lamps, pendant
with crystals, shed a voluptuous light over the fai
ry scene, while the melody of exquisite music floats
on the perfumed air. But to see how the regal
throng is hushed to stillness—admiration and awe
usurp the place of gaiety and mirth. A godlike form
advances. With what majestic air and graceful
mean he treads kefore the august presence. Rings
graspitis hand, princes are suppliant for a nod,
and all the nobility hurries to pay honors to the most
distinguished man of his age ! rot this very man
was a mechanic ! A few short years before you
might have secs that same hand, now grasped by
royalty, matted with dirt; and on that brow upon
which was written the greatest wisdom and genius
of all the earth you might have seen the perspira
tion course its way as he toiled at his daily task
Yes—Franklin—the Minister, the Philosopher—he
who stretched forth his hand and caught lightning
in its fiery course from heaven—was a mechanic.—
Let America boast of her son. Nor is this a single
instance of the greatness and distinction that the
sons of labor have gained. Look at history's record
of brilliant stars in the firmament of science and arts,
and more than half you will find have been acquaint
ed with labor in its sternest forms.
The present principles of our aristocracy proved
absent and false, in what manner shall its reform be
commenced and perfected By disregarding all ex
ternal circumstances and conditions and regarding
with more favor, worth, mind and intellect. •When
you see men who shrink not'from the performance of
labor or the blight of poverty—that which the world
calls disgrace—but who press onward and exult in
great and glorious deeds, mark
_such, for they are
an honor to their country and dignity to their race.
What matters it if they tracd not their ancestry for
generations; they aro free-born republicans, and are
above nobility save that of the mind. This is. the
class of men who form our country—who are rapid
ly rendering their country the greatest nation of the
earth. Here wo have an aristocracy indeed, where
merit is placed on genius and wisdom, not on yellow
dirt, which can never give a name or character for
guotiness'and virtue ;where man is judged not by the
quantity of filthy lucre lie possesses, but by his in
tellectual capacities. ~These are the principles our
pilgrim fathers desired to inculcate—the principles
our great and glorious Washington smiled upon.—

MARRIED ONCE.—"Bridget,' said a lady to her
servant Bridget Coneley,—"who was that you were
talking with so long at the gate last night'!" m
"Sure noon° but my oldest brother, am" replied
Bridget with a blushing cheek.
"Your brother 11 did'nt know you had a brother.

"Indeed, how comes it his name is not the same

"Troth, mam,

"Elegant, mosso; you look bolo as a lion."
"Bold as a lion, Pompey ! How' do you know ?
You never saw a lion."
"0 yes, moan, 1 seed ono down to massa Jenkins,

" , Down to Jenkins, Pompey ! Why you great
fool, Jenkins hasn't got a lion—thats a jackass."
"Can't help it mama, you look jest like him."
THE DRUNKARD'S Detrunren.—Thst night I was
out very late. I returned by Lee's eabin about 11
o'clock. As I approached I saw a strange looking
object cowering under the low eaves. A cold rain
was falling. It was latetin autumn. I drew near
and there was Millie wet' to the akin. Her father
had driven her oat some hours before; she had laid
down to listen for the heavy snoring of his drunken
slumbers, so that she might creep back to her bed.
But before she heard it, - nature seemed exhausted,
and she Sell into a troubled sleep with the rain drops
pattering upon her. I tried to take her home with
me ; but no, true as a martyr to his faith, she strng ,
gled from my arms and returned to her own dark
and silent cabin. Things went on so for weeks and
Montle, but at length Lee grew less violent, even
in his drunken fits to his self-denying child ; and
one day when he awoke from a heavy slumber after
a' debauch, and found her preparing breakfast for
him and singing a childish song, he turned to her,
and with a tone almost tender, said :
" Millie, what makes you stay with me !"
" Because you are my father and I love you."
" You love me' repeated the wretched man;
[(rye me lie looked at his bloated limbs, his soiled
and ragged clothes; "love me„ he still murmured—
Millie what makes you love me? I am a poor drunk
ard; every body else despisei me. Why don't'you?"
"Dear father" said the girl with swimming oyes,
"mother taught mo to love you, and every night she
comes from heaven and stands by my little bed and
says, Millie 'dont leave your father : Millie love your
father. He will get away from that rum fiend one
of these days, and then how happy yen will be,.
A l'iturricm. SErtsths.—A few Sundays
since, a certain highly poi ttlar suid talented
clergyman of the Methodist Church read to
his eongregation the 2d Chapter of Panl's
Epistle to the Ephesians, the 19th verse or
which is as follow :
"Now, therefore, ye are uu more etrangers
and foreigners, hut fellow citizens with the
saints:ilk] of the hou.ehuld of Cod:"
Alter reading this verse, lie deliberately
raised Lis eyes to his congregation, and re
marked, "dear hearers, St. Paul WILS not u.
Know Nothing!" and without another word
of entuntent went oit with his reading.--Bal
