SHINGLE MACHINE
DR. A. V. B. ORR'S celebrated Machine for
splitting, shaving, jointing and cutting Shin
gles, was on exhibition at the late Pennsylvania
State Fair, and had awarded it a Silver Medal, with
special notice from the Judges. This machine is
superior to other machines for the same purpose, in
this, that it;splits tne shingle from the block or bolt
lengthwise with the grain of the wood, without requi
ring the wood to be first steamed. The first cut in
splitting the shingle from the block will produce or
make the unfinished shingle smooth on the one side,
and in the second process, the shaving knife will
shave aqd make smooth and taper the other side of
the shingle as required.
This machine is simple, durable and cheap in its
construction, and can well be made for $7O.

1 is now prepared to sell order two millions of Acres of
selected Prairie, Farm and Vood Lands. in Tracts of 40
Acres and upwards, to sui purchasers,ed long credits

They were granted by the Government to encourage the
building of this Railroad, • hich runs from the extreme
north to the extreme south 'f the State of Illinois. It pas
ses, from eud to end, thrbu. • the richest and most fertile
Prairies of the State. dotted hero and there with magnifi
cent Oak Groves. The receun opening of nearly WO miles of
this road throws open the labds for cultivation. They are
scattered from 1 to fifteen miles on each side of It, through
its entire length.
The soil is a dark, rich mould, from one to five feet In
depth, Is gently roling, and{peculiarly fitted for grazing
cattle and sheep, and the cultivation of wheat, Indian
corn, Sic.
The first crop of Indian corn planted on the newly bro
ken prairie, usuall pays the :oat of plowing and sometime s
fencing. Wheat sown on now turned sod is sure to yield
very large profits. One mat with a plow and two yoke o f
oxen will break one and a h cf.., two acres per day. Con
tracts can be made for Mistaking, ready for corn or wheat,
at $d to $2 51) per acre. By 'judicious management farm s
may be broken and fenced the first and under a high
state of cultivation the second year.
The larger yield on the chap lauds of Illinois,over high
priced lands In the Easterbfand Middle States, is known
to be ranch more than suflitient to pay the difference o f
transportation to the Easterit market. The rapid increase
and growth of flourishing towns and villages silting the
line of this road afford a mipwing home demand for farm
produce. ' 1

Parties having in vlew lowa, Kansas, Nebraska, or Min
nesota for their future homes should take Into considera
tion that the country west of the Mississippi is destitute
of railroads; that the conveniences of transporting grain
and produce farms on the line of the Illinois Central
Railroad, direct to the great Eastern market, It sufficient
of Itself to pay the investment at from $lO to $l5 per acre
higher than in government lands In lowa. In other words
that it costs so much more to get produce from the interi
or of the country west of the MississlppLto the Eastern
market, that the farmer will find itmuch more profitable
to locate on the line of this railroad.
l'riee and Terms of Payment. —The price will vary from
$5 to $25, according to location, quality, ac. Contracts for
deeds may be made during the year 1855, stipulating the
purchase money to be paid In five annual instalments—
the first to be due in two years from date of contract, the
other annually thereafter. The last payment will become
due at the end of the sixth year from date of contract.
By the 22d second section of the Act of the Legislature,
approved 10th February, 1851. these lands are free from
taxation until they are paid for, and a deed of conveyance
granted to the purchaser.
Interest will be charged at only two per cent. per an.
num.—As a security fur the performance of the contract,
the first two years' interest must Le paid in advance, but
it must be understood that .one tenth of the land purcha
sed shall yearly be brought under cultivation. Longer
credits at six per cent. per annum may be negotiated by

Interest is paid at the rate of five per cent., commencing
from the day of deposit, and ceasing fourteen days previ
ous to the withdrawal of the money.
