SHE COULD NOT HELP IT
AN INCIDENT OF ACTUAL LIFE
Lizzie could not help it. She was young,
and guileless, and ignorant of the world's
ways; and therefore she could not help it
when Gordon, a gay and dashing fellow,
threw himself at her feet, and made the
most earnest declarations of luve to her.
She shed tears, to be sure ; and she was
a deal surprised at the audacity of the
man; but then she readily forgave him,
and when he rose to his feet, and drew
her to his side, she could not help it if
her ehee a k reclined softly against his, or if
her swat lips were just parted to receive
the chaste samtation of love: 0,
Lizzie could not help it, when she prom
ised to meet her lover that evening.
But she did meet him, and they walked
in silence under starry skies, and
inhaled the perfume of sweet clover ;and he
took her hand in his, and iu the presence of
that shining host, swore to love, cherish
and protect her forever—that she should
be his, and he hers—that nothing could
them sever; and thus they became one
heart, indivisible and inseparable.
But Lizzie's parents were proud and
wealthy, and Gordon had nothing but his
industry and honest labor to rely upon.
He would not have dared to propose for
the hand of Lizzie Grey, knowing the
distinction between their different positions;
but how could he refrain from a declara
tion, after having met her several times,
and reading her heart,' as it were, and
looking deep down into the mystery of
those blue eyes? How could he, under
the influence of that calm summer even
ing, when
—Every air Was heavy Mill the sigha
Ut orange groves, and mu..., of ~,vvet hoot,
And murmur!. oh lon touniainb
I' the midst of ruses"—
how could he, under such influences, help
pouring forth his soul to the object of his
adoration, and vow to her again and again
how much he loved her! And certainly when
he drew her fondly to. his side, and her
• heart was throbbing with tenderness, like
a mother dove, and he pressed her cheek
to
_his, and imprinted on her cool and
' placed brow. a kiss, there was no harm
done and no sin committed, though an
angry father might storm and a proud
mother fret with wounded vanity. They
were lovers—fate had brought them to
gether—neither of them could help it, and
they were both believers in destiny ; and
therefore, though they both Saw their er
ror in falling in love, passion and feeling
overruled their better judgment, and they
would not pause to reflect upon the conse
quences of an ill-assorted union, where
there was no probability of winning the
consent of either of the parents. It is a
misfortune for a poor young man to fall
in love with the daughtlr of wealthy pa
rents,. and proud ones, too.
TZ Mr. Grey,..the father of Lizzie was a
merchant of wealth and standing,-and his
opinion on mercantile matters was consid
ered as sound as the ;,.law and the pro
phets." His life had been one of con
tinued success, from the time he first en
tered himself as. a clerk to Henchman,
Clark & Co., green from the country to
the ripeness of middle age. Through a
marriage with the daughter of the principal
of the Um, he became a partner, and final
, ly succeeded to the entire business.
But Mr. Grey was thoroughly a prac
tieal man. There was no romance in his
constitution. A dollar was just a dollar,
with the interest added. He was a quiet,
sober man, who walked through the world
with the same face ever on ; nor was ever
the least shadow of passion seen to flit
over it. He never showed anger, .and
but seldom smiled. He looked like a
man that owed the world a ,bitter hatred,
and was pursuing it with relentless deter
mination. Even in his own house, the
sternness of his features never relaxed;
yet in a practical sense, he was one of the
mildest and ]host indulgent of husbands
and fathers; and as far as money could
be of avail, there was not a whim of his
wife or his daughter that was not gratified.
Strange man ! how was it possible that he
could confer hapiness on a home Mrs.
Grey was a passive wife. It had been a
marriage of interest at first. Her affec
tions had never been solicited, and as
she had never found any occasion to love,
she expected none from her husband.
Strange prostitution of human nature—
, such a marriage !
Mr. Grey was a perfectly heartless man.
He had forgotten his own origin, and how,
from small beginnings, he had succeeded
in life until he had attained, all that his
ambition could seek or crave for—the po
sition of the leading merchant of the city,
and the reputation of being :the wealthiest
man in it. He was incapable of emotion
as the anvil that receivs the blows of the
smith's Eammerrand as cold and un
yielding asinexorable fate, or the wheels
of the Hindoo Juggernaut. Mr. Grey
was also a member of a church, and was
as regular every Sabbath at his devotions,
as the day came round. But in his reli
gion, Mr. Grey was the smite as in every
: thing else. There was ,no enthusiasm in
it. He seemed to be religious rather as
a duty than as a love—just as though the
good God could not see into his heart
through the thick veil_of hypocricy which
lie had thrown over it—just as though
he coald hide himself away in the garden
from that Omnipresent eye; or cover his
shame with fig leaves--just as though he
could hide from himself, where the search
ing ,'Scrutiny of his own conscience could
not sit in judgment upon him.
There are a great manyjust such Chris
tians as Mr. Grey, who are every day
met in society, and who live and die un
der the false impression that they have
done their duty conscientiously, both to
God and man—men who belong to the
church from selfish principles only, deem
ing it an act of necessity in order to se
cure success in business; thus they live,
and grow into old age, and die, without
ever knowing one truthful emotion.
And Mrs. Grey—she belonged to tho
church too ; but, in becoming a member,
she ; was actuated by diffeient principles
from Mr. Grey. It was a fashionable
church, where ladies went to show their
fine dresses, and their carriages; and their
servants; and where they listened to a
haildsome and eloquent preacher, who
repeived a salary of six thousand dollars
a year, besides house-rent and perquisites.
Such was Mrs. Grey—almost as heart
less as her husband. Now, certainly,
neither of these two persons could have
enjoyed life only as an animal enjoys it ;
and yet perhaps it was not their fault.
Mrs. Groy might have become a different
woman had she been loved by the man
who wedded her—had she been warmed
into life instead of frozen into ice. And
he—had he commenced his career with
less of suspicion, and met the world more
frankly than he did, he would have learned
that there was something worth living for,
beside self. It is a dreadful pity that
hearts must wither and die like imprisoned
birds—locked within cold walls, and
guarded so closely lest one honest emo
tion shalt steal from them—that the fresh
thing that first feels the throb of life
when we were born, should wither with
distrust. It is as unnatural as the vows
of the Bramins, which prompt them to in
dict self torture upon their persons, of the
most horrible species, in order to propitiate
the wrath of their deities.
God bless the man who can live a long
life through, and keep his heart to the last
as fresh as infancy, in spite of all the ad
versities and broken friendships of life.
As for Lizzie Grey—she was neither like
her father nor mother. She was a bright,
cheerful, laughter-loving creature, spright
ly, vivacious, trustful. Her brow was as
clear and sunny as summer skies, and her
eyes had that beaming, melting blue, that
knew so well how to express the purity and
tenderness of her soul. In form and ac
tion she was faultless, but her chief charm
was in her voice, for it trembled on her
lips as sweetly as did ever melody on the
string of a lute. It was melting and ten
der, like that of a mating dove—it fell up
on the soul like the sweetest of honey up
on the palate—it was a low, soft, delicious
murmur, withlall the aroma of a true wo
man's heart in it—it fell upon the ear so
tenderly, like the strange music one some
titnes, hears in dreams—it vibrated on the
soul of the listener, passing over it like
the balmiest summer zephyrs over the
strings of the l olian harp--it awoke the
tenderest of emotions, and made the eyes
glisten with an unwanted expression of
sympathy. It was perfection, and must
have been composed of all heavenly har
monies. Oh, that music could have float
ed upon the ear of Time, to become mute
and voiceless forever, unless the angels in
heaven became jealous of its sweetness,
and petitioned.that it be
.added to that im
mortal choir that keep continual praise
around the throne of Him who is Eternal!
What wonder that Gordon loved her
John Gordon was a clerk for Mr. Grey.
He had been in that position for four years,
and had proved himself intelligent, active
and trustworthy—three qualities which Mr.
Grey appreciated, though he took particu
lar pains not to show Gordon the fact.—
The young clerk was admitted on terms of
familiarity into the family, not out of any
respect that was entered for him, but mere
ly on sufferance, the same as sometimes the
lady suffers the cat to come into the par
lor for a moment. He was, permitted to
sit in the company with Lizzie, and even
to wafk out with her; because how could
tho wo.lthy Mr. Grey, even fur a moment,
suppose that his clerk, with a salary of one
thousand a year, would presume to make
love to• his daughter, or that Lizzie could
ever be so foolish as to encourage any fa
miliarity on the part of a young man whose
prospects in life depended upon his salary.
Mr. Grey forgot that he was once a clerk
on a salary himself. But John Gordon
could never beco William Grey. John
had a heart, as fit'sh and as pure as the
summer air of his country home. Neither
William Grey nor Mrs. Grey could under
stand it; but Lizzie could, and did, and
when John wickedly fell in love with her,
and foolishly told her, poor Lizzie felt so
tenderly for him, that she could not but
respond, and so they fell to loving eachother
as hard as they could, without considering
the consequences, and just as though it
would be the proudest act of Mr. and Mrs.
Grey's lives to give their daughter away
to a poor young clerk. How sadly people
often get disappointed.
And now we are coming to the saddest
part of our story, though it must be told,
for it is not one of fiction, as many of our
readers may remember, if they will take
the trouble to trace their memories. back
for the space of twenty-five years.
Well, John Gordon loved Lizzie Gre y
with the free and 'generous soul of honest
manhood. There could be no sin in lov
ing one so pure and confiding. We will
not say that he did not have some com
punctions when he reflected upon the dif
ference in their positions—he a clerk upon
s small salary, and she the heiress of an
immense fortune. He sometimes wished
she were a poor girl—he would love her
just as well ; for he knew that money was
the god of Mr. Grey, arid he could scarce
ly believe that he would consent to bestow
his daughter upon one in his humble posi
tion. But such thoughts made him blush,
and he would repel them with indignation,
for he knew his love was honest and unsel
fish, and he remembered, too, that Mr. Grey
was once as poor as himself, and he felt
that there were yet chances for himself to
raise by. He could not help his love, and
there was no use to struggle against it;
nor could Lizzie help loving him. they
were mutually bound up in each other, and
love was as necessary a part of their exist
ance as the air they breathed ; and so the
happy hours they spent together were full
of rosy clouds, and the air was balmy with
sweetness, and trembling full of music.—
It was all fairy land to them, and they felt
immortal.
For many months John Gordon and Liz
zie Grey thus loved each other, until at
length he mustered courage one day to
speak to Mr. Grey on the subject. He did
not expect that the farther would.be sur
prised at him for doing so, for Lizzie and
hirmhad been so long . on intimate terms,
that he naturally enough sqposed that
their relationship to each other was per
fectly understood by both pa4ents. Cer
tainly it was reasonable enough to infer
that two young persona like themselves
could not meet every day in the year, and
walk out evenings without getting attached
to each other; and so there was no harm
in speaking to Mr. Grey on the subject,
particutarly as they both imagined that
they would be still hannier if they could
" COUNTRY IS THEMOST PROSMISOUS WHERE LABOR COMMANDS TEE GESILTZST BZWAND."-BIIN:

only be made man and wife. And so one
day in the counting room John told the
cold Mr Grey how he loved his daughter,
and he asked permission to marry her.—
But Mr. Grey only answered him with a
sneer, and told him the thing was impossi
ble and bade him think no more of the
subject, for that it would be at the hazard
of his situation, John knew enough of Mr.
Grey's disposition to understand that there
was no hope left for him unless he took
Lizzie against the consent of her parents,
and from a home of luxury and affluence
to one of humble. pretensions ; and he
would not do that for the world—not for
Lizzie's sake,
for he loved her too much to
impose npon her any sacrifice. He could
only tell her of his ill success, and they
would spend one more evening together
in sweet communion, and then he would
tear himself away forever, and seek his
fortunes in some other part of the world.
The sequel is short.
The next day after John's interview
with Mr. Grey was Sunday, and the whole
family went to church as usual, and John
went with them. In the afternoon at the
conclusion of the service, Gordon and Liz
zie Grey took a long walk—two sad lovers
as ever met—and they walked till the
shadows of twilight fell, and then having
the key, and finding themselves in the
neighborhood of the store, they entered and
locked the door, and sat down in the office,
and there they sat and talked till morning
but who can lift the veil to discover all
that was said, or to expose the fond com
munion of those two loving souls. %Vho
can picture all they enjoyed and all they
sufferfd all that long night, or paint the
awful horror of the fattier the next morn
ing as he entered his store and found both
his daughter and John Gordon locked in
each other's arms, fast asleep—in death !
Weak but fond lovers ! they did not pos
sess the moral courage to live; and thus
they determined to pass from life together,
and consecrate by a double crime, their un
fortunate attachment. But Mr. Grey and
his wife bore the misfortune bravely.—
Their hearts had already become so cold
that they were incapable of expression, and
in a few months business went on in its
old say, and the fate of poor Lizzie and
her lover ceased to be talked about ; but
they both sleep together in the family tomb
beneath that rough old granite church, and
Mr. Grey, these twentyyears since a has be
come a crabbed old man, and will probably.
try to buy his way into heaven by leaving
at his death, afew thousand dollars to tract
and missionary societies.
The reader must draw his own moral,
for this is as veritable a story as was ever
writ.
