The Autumn ; going with its beauty so glowing,
And Winter o'er all things is edsting.its pall :
The rose tree is fading, no longer 'tin shading

The dahlias are lopping, the ripe fruit is &limping,
The corn-leaves are withered and dry on the stalk,
The ring-dove is sighing, the grasshopper dying,
The fire-fly no longer enlivens the walk.
IThe forests are changing, the wild birds are rang-

A TRUE STORY
I was on my way to P , in the fall 61
9—; it was towards the cold evenings in the first
•
all month, when my horse stopped suddenly belore
a respectable house, about lour miles from N—.
There was something strange and remarkable in
his action of my horse, nor would he move a step
in spite of all my exertions to move him on.
I determined to gratify this whim, and at the
ame time, a strange presentiment which came
d i ver me, a kind of supernatural feeling indescriba,
le, seemed to urge me to enter. Having knocked,
Ind tequested to he conducted to the lady or gen-
I leman of the house, I was ushered into a neat sit
ing-room, where sat a be 'utiful gill, about twenty
ears of .go. She rose at y entrance, and seem
little. surprised at the apkrance of a perfect
ranger.
In a few words I related to her the strange con
duct of my horse, and his stubborn opposition to
rty will. "I am not," I observed, " stipend itious,
r or inclined on the side of metaphysical doctrines,
or one of those who support them ; but the strange,
unaccountable feeling that crept over me; in at
tempting to pass your house induced me to solicit
lodging for the night."
We are not, - she replied, "well guarded, 't is true;
I ut in this part of the country we have little to rear
trom robbers, for we have never heard of any being
tear us; we are surrounded by good neighbors, and
I flatter myself we are at peace with them. But
this evening, in consequence of my father's absence,
I feel unusually lonesome; and if, it were not bor
t ering on the superstitions, I, might reason as you
have, and•say I consent to your staying; for SlMl
tar feelings had been mine ere you arrived, from
that cause I cannot imagine.
IlThe evening passed delightfully away; my young
ostess was intelligent and lovely; the hours flew
o quick that on looking at my watch, I was stir
)rised to find that it was eleven o'clock.
This was the signal of retiring; and by 1° every
inmate of the house was asleep save myself. 1
tiould not sleep—strange visions floated across my
brain, and I lay twisting and turning on the bed, in
rill the agony of sleepless suspense. The clock
truck one; its vibrating sound had scarcely died
Ert l vay, when the opening of a shutter and the rais-
Mg of a sash in one of the lower apartments, con
t/inced me that some one was entering the house.
.r,'. noise followed as of a person jumping
from the
Window-sill to the floor, and then followed the light
'rid noiseless step of one ascending the stairway.
I slept in the room adjoining the one 'occupied
y the lady; mine was next to the staircase; the step
damem along the gallery, slow and cautious. I had
.seized my pistol, and slipped on part of my clothes,
determined to watch or listen to the mWements,
deemingly mysterious or suspicious—the sound of
steps stopped at my door—then followed one as ap
plying the ear to the key-hole, und a low breathing
Convinced me the villain was listening. I stood mo
tionless, the pistol firmlygrasped. Not a muscle mov
ed, not a nerve was slackened, for I felt as if heaven
had selected me out as the instrument to effect Its
purpose.
The ptrson now slowly passed on, and I as cau
tiously approached the door of my bed chamber.
I now went by instinct, or rather by conveyance
Of sound, for as soon as I heard his hand grasp the
fetch of one dour mine seized on the other—a deep
silence followed his movement; it seemed as if he
Beard the sound and awaited the repetition; it came
not, all was still; he might have considered it the
echo. of his own noise. 1 heard the door open softly
I also opened mine; and the very moment I step-
Ped into the entry, I caught the glimpse of a tall
Man entering the lighted chamber of the young
lady.
I softly stepped along the entry, and approached
the chamber; through the half opened door I glanced
My eyes into the room. No object was visible save
the curtained bed, within whose sheets lay the in
tended victim to a midnight assassin, and he, gra
(lions heaven! a Nr.ouo! for at that moment a tall,
fierce looking block man approached the bed, and
never were Othello and Desdemona more naturally
rlepresented, at least the particular scene of the im
mortal bard's conception.
MI was now all suspense; m:y'teart swelled Into
y throat almost to suffocation, my eyes to crack-
Mg, as I made a bound into the room.
The black villain had ruthlessly dragged part of
the covering off the bed, when the sound of my foot
'Mused him to turn. He stored, and thus confront
we stood gazing on each other a few seconds;
I i 5 eyes shot fire—fury was depicted in his counte
nance. He made a spring towards mc, and the
'text moment lay a corpse on the floor.
The noise of the pistol aroused the fair sleeper;
she started in bed, and seemed an angel of the White
elands emerging from her'downy bed to soar up to
the skies,
•I'he tirst thing that presented itself to her view,
yt•oe myself standing near her with a pistol in my

The following anecdote from the New Hamp

Many years ago there was, n the eastern part of
Massachusetts, a worthy old D. D., and although
he was an eminently benevole i nt man and a good

500 CHALLENGE.
WHATEVER concerns the health and happi
ness of a people is at all times of the most
valuable importance. I take it for granted that ev
ery person will do all in their power, to save the
lives of their children, and that every. person will
endeavor to promote their own health at all sacri
fices. I feel it to he my duty to solemnly assure
you that WORMS, according tithe opinion of the
most celebrated Physicians, are the primary causes
of a large majority of diseases to which children
and adults arc liable ; if you have an-appetite con
tinually changeable from one kind of food to an
other, bad Breath, pain in the Stomach, picking at
the Nose, hardness and fullness of the Belly, Dry
Cough, Slow Fever, Pulse irregular—remember
that all these denote WORMS, and you should at
once apply the remedy :

HOBENSACK'S WORM SYRUP
An article founded upon scientific principles,
compounded wills purely vegetable substances, be
ing perlectly safe when taken, and can be given to
the snout tender Infant with decided beneficial ef

made them weak and debilitated, the tonic.proper
ties Of my Worm Syrup arc such, that it stands
without an equal in the catalogue of medicines in
giving tone and strength to the stomach, which
makes it an infallible remedy for those afflicted
with Dyspepsia, the astonishing cures performed by
this Syrup after Physicians have failed, is the best
evidence of its superior efficacy over all others.
THE TAPE WORM!
This is the most difficult WOTIII to destroy of all
that infest the human system, it grows to an almost
indefinite length, becoming so coiled and fastened
in the intestines and stomach, effecting the health
so sadly as to cause St. Vitus Dance, Fits, 4-c.,
that those afflicted seldom if ever suspect that it is
Tape Worm hastening them to an early grave.—
In order to destroy this Worm, a very energetic
treatment must be pursued, it would therefore be
proper to take 6 or 8 of my Liver Pills so as to re
move all obstructions, that the Worm Syrup may
act direct upon the Worm, which must be taken in
doses of 2. tablespoonfulls 3 times a day—these di
rections followed have never been known to fail in
curing the most obstinate case of Tape Wortn.
HOBENSACK'S LIVER PILLS.
No part of the system is more liable to disease
than the LIVER, it serving as a filterer to purify
the blood, or giving the proper secretion to the
bile; so that•any wrong action of the Liver effects
the other important parts of the system, and results
variously, in Liver Complaint, Jaundice, Dyspepsia,
‘Src. We should, therefore, watch every symptom
that might innicate a wrong action of the Liver.—
l'hese Pills being composed of Roots 4. Plants fur
nished by nature to heal the sick: Namely, Ist,
An Expectorant, which augments the secretion
from the Pulmonary mucus membrane, or promote
the discharge of secreted matter. 2nd. An Alter
ative, which changes in sonic inexplicable and in
sensible mummer the certain morbid action of the
system. 3rd, A Tonic, which giros tone and
stro.ngth to the nervous systems, renewing health
and vigor to all parts of the body. 4th. A Catliar

ingredients, and operating an the bowels and ex

matter, and purifying the blood, which destroys
disease and restores health.

in many complaints to which you arc subject. In
obstructions either total or partial, they have been
found of inestimable benefit restoring their func
tional arrangements to a healthy action, purifying

THE object of this Cosineticis to harmonize and
soften the character of the complexion. Being
an article entirely different from and much superior
to ordinary powder, it requires a small quantity in
its application, and yet so identities itself with the
natural appearance as to be imperceptible to the ni
cest observer. To those ladies particularly who
are subject to flushes of the face or neck, to such as
are exposed to habitual or occasional agitations,
whether nervous or otherwise, the Pearl Powder
affords harmless, effectual and most welcome relief;
it is also very cool and refreshing in warm wcatner.
The Toilet and the Nursery hear equal testimony
to the value of thin article; in both it is justly es
teemed indispensable. 'Co cool the surface or the
skin—to conceal the effect of agitation—to allay
chafing and irritation, are its Ilinct.onil. The, pro
prietor directs his attention to secure purity and
sweetness in the selection or the ingredients as well
as neatness and exactness in its preparations.
