On September 28, 1852, at Cattle Pinekney,:in the Harbor of Charleston, South Carolina, of the Yellow Fever, Brevet Major John F. Roland, Cap. lain in the 21 Regiment of Artillery, U. S. Army. He was the third son of the late Henry Roland, ESQ, of New Holland, in this county, and was aged about thirtpsix years; was graudated at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, in 1836, and commissioned Brevet 21 Lieut. in the 4th Regiment Artillery on the Ist of July of the same mouth; Ist Lieut. on the Bth of July, 1838, and Captain on the 3d of March, 1817. Brevet Major Roland served with his Regiment in the Florida War, and took part in the battle of the "Walton Swamp," in the Cherokee Nation, and on the Canada frontier during the disturbances !here. In the summer 011843 he sailed from New York, with Duncan's company of Light Artillery (of which he was the Senior Lieut.) to join Geri. Tay for at Corpus Christi, and served with that distin guished corps throughout all its brilliant career un der its chivalric and gallant commander, Duncan, on the Rio Grande, at Monterey, and at Vera Cruz. For h's gallantry and good conduct at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma, he received the brevet of Captain, and for like services at Monterey, that of Major. At Palo Alto, he commanded that section of Duncan's Battery, which, by rushing through the fire and smoke of the burning prairie, made its sod den and unexpected appearance in front of the ene my's right, and thus foiled the attack on Gen. Tay. lor's left. At Montthiy, by means of ropes, he hois ted a gun up the mountain, which he directed and opened on the "Bishop's Palace, - soon causing its capture and contributing greatly to the surrender of the town. After the siege of Vera Cruz, lie re ceived his promotion to a Captaincy, and was re lieved from duty with "Duncan's Battery;',..-having been ordered to the U. S. to raise his company. In the following November he returned to Vela Cruz, from Ness' York, with his new company, and in December joined Gen. Scott's army in the city of Mexico. The General immediately had it moun ted and equipped With a battery of guns,—awl such it remained until the evacuation of the country After the war, his Regiment havir g been sent to garrison the Southern Atlantic posts he was ita • tioned at Savannah and Augusta, Georgia, tint a short time, when, in consequence of rumored India') hostilities he proceeded to Florida with his com mand. In 1530, he was ordered to the Charleston harbor with it, and in command of Castle Pinckney Major Roland died. His death deprives the Army of one of the bet officers of his grade, and his Regimental associates of one of their most gallant, loved, and esteemed comrades. Well will they be reminded that, "Art is long, and Time is fleeting And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave.' Engraved by pm:fast:lon) from Stuart's only ori ginal portrait, in the Atheneum, Boston. TH'' superb picture, engraved under the super intendence of THOMAS SULLY, Esq., the emi nent and highly gifted artist, is the only correct likeness of Washington ever published. It has been characterised as tire gre - ftest work of art ever produced in this country. As to its fidelity, we refer to the letters of the adopted son of Washing ton, GEORGE WASHINGTON PARR CUSTIs, who says, "it is a faithful representation of the celebrated original," rind to CHIEF JUSTICE TANEY of the Su preme Court of the United States, who says, " a work of art its excellence and beauty must strike every one who sees it: and it is no less happy in its likeness to :the Father of his country'. It was my good fortune to have Been him in the days of my boyhood, and his whole appearance is yet strongly impressed on my memory. The portrait you have issue 4 appears to me to be an exact likeness, rep reseuling perfectly the expression as well as the form and features of the face." And says Senator CAss, it is a life-like representation of the great original. President FILLMORE says, "the work ap pears to me to have been admirably executed and eminently worthy of the patronage of the public."' 'Says 34 AnCIIANT the eminent portrait painter, and the pupil of Stuart, " your print to my mind is more remarkable than any other I have seen, for pre senting the whole individualty of the original por trait, together with the noble and dignified repose of air and manner, which all who ever saw him considered a marked characteristic of the illus trious man it commemorates." For the great merits of this picture we would re fer every lover of Washington to the portrait itself, to he seen at the office of this paper, and to the letters of the following Artists, Statesmen, Jurists and Scholars accompanying it.
