Canal Commissioner. Mn. EDITOR—The time is drawirit nigh when the democracy will be called upon to fix upon some person on whom they may concentrate the vote for Canal Commissioner, to succeed Col. Gamble. It is important that the claims of each may be prop erly understood to ensure a victory. It is all important that the person who is to be favored with the nomination, should be able to con centrate the whole democratic vote. To do this he must be possessed of the necessary qualificatidns for business; unimpeached probity, popular manners, and a radical democrat. Such a man, I believe, is ADAM Esanon, Esq., of. York county, who is too well known to the democracy of the State to re quire eulogium from my hand. He represented his county in both branches of the State Legisla ture, with entire satisfaction to his constituents, and the party throughout the State. He is of mature age, practical business habits, of unblemished hon esty and virtue, and a consistent democrat. In a geographical point of view, his claims should not be overlooked, as the Canal Commissioner who was last elected, came from another part of the State, it is reasonable that our part should claim the honor of presenting a candidate next election. 'Faking all together, it is believed that Mr. EIS AIIGII has peculiar claims on his democratic brethren in the State. A LANCASTER COUNTY DEMOCRAT. • Moue QuEItaRLS BETWEEN THE HUNHAHIAN EXlLES—Kossuth the Hero versus Jagello the Heroine- A very curious correspondence has taken place be tween Major Tochman. the spouse of Apollonia Jagello—the heroine who accompanied Ujhazy, ex-Governor of Comorn, to this country—and Kos suth, the hero and ex-Governor of all Hungary, who has already filled two worlds with the lame of his speeches. It appears that Matlame Toch man (Jagello,) visited Madame Kopsuili on New Year's day, and was received with/such marked reserve that Major Tochman addressed a letter to Kossuth on the subject, aud wanted to know Neth er the coldness arose from certain reparts about Madame Tochman, and also whether Governor Ujhazy is not an honorable and upright gentleman. Kossuth, in reply, states that the reserve of Mad ame Kossuth did ncit proceed from that cause, as she was ignorant of those reports; and as to Ujhazy, Kossuth endorses him to the fullest extent, as " his oldest and one of his truest friends, and pledges his word that there can be no man of a more honora ble and uplight character." Kossuth, however, does not express his belief in the charges, but leaves that matter entirely in doubt, notwitlistandinLi the services of Jagello in Hungary, which Major Toch man recounts. Major Tochman is dissatisfied, and, in another letter, puts the following poser to Kos suth: Would Ujhazy have adopted, as a member of hislamily, and introduced as a political exile, one unworthy of cordial reception by Governor Kos suth?" To this Kossuth is silent; and Major Toch man publishes the correspondence, together with a very warm letter of Ujhazy to his dear Apollonia, dated December 4, from lowa. It will be in the recollection of the reader that Major and Madame Tochman came to this city, from Washington, about the time of Kossuth's ar rival, and that they sought an interview with him, which was denied. This seems strange treatment from a hero to a heroine; but at present the he roine appears to have the best of the battle, for Kossuth endorses Ujhazy, and Ujhazy endorses Ja gello. How it will end, we must leave to time to determine.—N. Y. Herald. THE NEW STATE HOUSE OP OM o.7—The " Buck eyes " are erecting a magnificent State House at . Columbus. It will be when completed the largest and most imposing Capitol in the Union, except the National at Washington. It is 304 .by 184 feet, and covers an area of 55,636 square feet. The Capitol of Tennessee is next in size, being , 135 by 240, and covers an area of 32,400 square feet. The Capitol of North Carolina stands next, 160 by 90, and covers an area of 14,940 feet. The Capitols of Pennsylvania and Indiana are of an equal size, 180 by 80 feet. The sum expended upon the Ohio Capitol during the last year was within a fraction of $lOO,OOO, and an appropriation of about $300,- 000 is asked for to carry forward the work for the next two years. Over one hundred convicts from the Penitentiary, and about 30 free stone cutters, are employed in the State House yard. Many of the blocks of stone used for columns, &c., are very large, weighing from 10 to 12 tons in the rough. The Capitol at Washington covers only about one tenth more ground than this building does. The Capitol of New York is an old freestone edifice, in a state of fair preservation. which . is 115 by 90 feet, and cost $120,000. The new State Hall is a fine marble building and cost $350,000. RUODF. ISLAND LEGISLATURE.--PnovintscE, Feb. 10.—The Maine Liquor Law, which was de feated in the House of Representatives of this State, on the 30th ult , passed the Senate this afternoon, with a proviso, submitting the question to a vote of the people of the State. The vote stood, yeas 10, nays 15. Thirteen Democrats and three Whigs voted in favor of the bill, 'and five DemOcrats and ten Whigs against it. ATLANTIC OCEAN FROZEN.—The Sag Harbor Corrector of the 28th ult., has the following para graph relative to the cold in that region : During the late remarkable severe weather, we have been told. that the Atlantic Ocean, on the south side of this Island, has been frozen, some say one and a half miles—others over five miles out; while others affirm that nothing but ice can be seen as far as the eye can reach! One thing is certain, which may further this assertion, which is, -that this island has been a constant lee-shore, that has kept the sea down, thus givinir, it an unusual chance to freeze. MANAGEMENT OF THE PUBLIC WORKS.—The Auditor General's answer to Senator Muhlen berg's resolution of inquiry relative to the cost and ex penses of the State Works, has been transmitted to the Legislature, and will soon appear in print. It shows that in trftenty-one years the difference be tween the gross receipts and gross working expenses is Tour rrfillions of dollars in favor of the State; and in that time thirty-two Stallions have been paid for interest on Canal loans! If from the four mil lions is deducted the increased construction account for the last eight or ten years, such as avoiding the Inclined Plane, &c., it leaves nothing. This is rather a discouraging picture of the productiveness of the State linprovements, about which we annu ally hear so much. It will, we fear, prove them to be a sinking _fluid of alarming magnitude. But, the sooner the actual condition of things is disclo sed, the better for the interests of the Common wealth—Reading Gazette.
