the said Company, assembled at their annual-meet
lug for the election of officers; at Wright's Hotel,
in the city'of Lancaster, on Saturday the 27th day'
of December, Ai. D. 1851.; the report o f their pro
ceedings during the present year.
The following statlmeot exhibits the amount of
loss sustained by the Farmers' . Mutual lisorance
Company during the past year, as also the number
of policies that have been issued and the number
withdrawn ; thus giving a clear view of the actual
condition of the said company.
The persons who have sustained losses by fite,
on property insured in the Company during the
present year, are
Christian Landis of Manheim township, by
a fire in &dwelling house, 5140 00
Michael W. May, of Bainbridge, by a fire
avhich occurred on the 28th of March, A.
D. 1851. His barn, bay shed, contents of
the barn, warehouse, merchandize inWare
house, and damage done to his stock of
dry goods and groceries,
Henry and Abraham Stoner, by a fire which
occurred in their dwelling house in April
last,
Henry Stoner, of West Earl township, by a
.fire which occurred in his barn, on the 9th
of July last, consuming his barn and con
tents—both Leing insured,
William Winnerholt, of Manor township, by
the burning of his cooper shop, on the
23d of October last,
It will be recollected too, that at the time the
last report was made, the company was indebted
to several persons who had sustained loss by fire I
during the preceding year, the sum of 87812 26
Thts, together with the loins sustained during
the present year, has all been paid, as well as other
incidental debts and expenses as will appear by the
report of the Treasurer; and the Directors have
the pleasure to inform this meeting that the Com
pany is now entirely free from debt, with the ex
ception of something over one hundred and forty
dollars due to the Treasurer. The amount of out
standing taxes cannot be exactly ascertained, -as it
:is in the hands of collectors, some of whom have
not yet made full returns, and probably some ex
onerations will have to be made, but the amount
yet to collect, and in the hands of the collectors
will be in and about five hundred and fifty dollars.
During the year which is now brought to a close,
I 108 new policies have been issued covering pro
perty to the amount of $218,117
Alterations and additions to old policies
have been mae, amounting to

have been cancelled, amount-.
ing in the aggregate to $200,012
And the alterations in old policies
diminishing the amount issued,

Leaving an actual increase to the

issued, amount to 1303, and the whole amount of
property at present insured is Two Millions, Three
Hundred4and Sixty Thousand Dollars, ($2,36000.)

siology, by familiar lectures to the more advanced
illustratedclasses by proper apparatus and Followed
by daily examinations of the pupils.
In the Female School the course will be as nearly
similar to that in the male, as the circumstances and
wants of the sex will admit. It will include the
same instruction in the Natural Sciences, and will
also embrace Drawing.
Applicants for admission, of both sexes, must be
children of citizens of Lancaster county ; if males
be over 14, and females over 13 years of age; and
be well grounded in Orthography, Reading, Arith
metic, Geography and English Grammar, and write
a fair hand.
Pupils from they county will be subject to the
same discipline as to study and conduct, as those
of the city; and will be expected to pursue all the
studies of the grade or class to which they may
belong, except in the Languages, all or any of which
may be omitted at the option of the parent or
guardian.
The TERMS are $l5 per annum, _ payable half
yearly in advance, without any extra charge; but
pupils are to find their own books and stationery.
This sum is the same as the average cost to the
City of the instruction of resident pupils.
There are now three competent Instructors and
about 100 pupils in each of the schools, with the
foregoing course of studies in operation. The num
ber of teachers will be increased to four when nee-
essary.
The scope and system of training is designed to
enable the pupils to perform the active duties of
life with credit to themselves, should they enter no
higher institution of learning; or to fit young men
to enter any college ie;the land, considerably ad
vanced, should they so desire. It is also especially
intended to aid in the preParation of Teachers.
Should more than the above number apply, per
sons designed for the profession of teaching will
be prefered.

signed, before lot February, 1852.

records and examinations, and inquisitions, and
their other remembrances, to do those things,
which, to their offices appertain in that behalf to be
done; and also, all those who will prosecute against
the prisoners who are, or then shall be in the Jail
-of the said county of Lancaster, ate to be then and
there to prosecute against them as shall be just.

at the Mechanics' Institute in the city of Lan
