./lour is rather better, most of the stock being
ydnder limits or held for higher prices, and sales of
about standard brands are reported at
at $4,25 per bbl for export, which is more than
the uniform asking rate ; the home demand con
tinues moderate, at about former quoted rates. —
Corn Meal is dull, and a further sale of 250 bbls
Penn’a Meal is reported at $3 per bbl. Rye Flour
is scarce, but very quiet. Grain.—There is a good
demand for Wheat, and the market is firmer, with
sales of 1 a 2000 bushels good and prime Southern
reds at 87 a 90c per bushel, and 8,000 bushels
prime Penn’a white mostly at 95c. Rye is scarce
and wanted, with further small sales of Southern
at 63c and Penn’a at 72c. Corn is less active;
some 40,000 bus. new Southern yellow brought 57
cts, and a small lot of old Penn’a 6lc per bushel;
the market closes dull. Oats are in demand and 1200
bushels Southern sold at 37 cts; buyers now offer
38c. Whiskey is held higher, with sales of 400
\ bbls. at 23c. and hhds. at 22c.
\ CATTLE. —The offerings of live stock for the
week were about, 12,00 beeves, 700 hogs, atnl 120
cows.
Prices.—Beeves are selling from $5,50 to 7,50
per 100 lbs according to quality.
HOGS.—AII sold at $6 a 6,50 per 100 lbs.
COWS. —All disposed.of at $l2 to 35 each.
SHEEP AND LAMBS'.—The former from $2
to 4 ; the latter from $1 to 3, according to quality.
BALTIMORE MARKET.
December 27, ISSI.
fiAi'TLE.—Offerings atthe scales to-day amount
ed to 900 head of beeves, 500 of which were sold
to city butchers and packers, at prices ranging from
} $2,50 to 3,50 per 100 lbs on the hoot—equal to :
/ $5 a 6,75 net, and averaging l s 3 gross. The bal
ance (400) were driven""to Philadelphia.
HOGS.—There is a good supply. We quote live
hogs at $6,25 per 100 lbs.
FLOUR.—In this great staple we have no par
ticular change to riote, save that the demand has
been more active. Sales on Saturday of 600 bbls
Howard st. at $4,12. On Monday sales of 700
bbls at $4,00, and 1200 bbls at $4 12. (>h the
same day 4000 bbh. City Mills changed hands, 2000
of which were sold at $4,00, and the balance at
at $4,12. On Tuesday 500 bbls Howard street
were sold $4,12 and 800 City Mills at $4,00.
There was nothing done iri Howard street brands
on Wednesday—soo bbls City Mills were sold at
$4,12, and 1200 bbls at 4,00. On Friday several
large sales were made at the above quotations.
Rye Flour we quote at 53,68 a 3,75 ; Corn Meal
$3,18 a $3,25.
GRAlN.—There is a belter demand for Grain,
and prices tending upwards. We note sales ol
ordinary to good red Wheat at 70 a 75 cents; good
to prime 7sa 80 cents; white Wheat, fair
qualities,*Bo to 85 cents; and very prime, such as
suitable for family flour 90 to 95 cents. Old white
and yellow corn 54a55 cents; liew white do., in
shipping order, 54 a 65 cents, and yellow do. 54 a.
55c. Rye 72 cts. Oats 37 a3B cts.
WHlSKEY.—Pennsylvania bbls sold to-day at
22} a 23c and in hhds at 22c. We qu6te, Baltimore
bbls at 22}c.
TOBACCO.—We have no transactions to note
this week of any importance. Holders refuse to,
offers, and are holding on, expecting higher
priceg. We continue to quote as follows :
Maryland—lnterior $3,50 a $4; common $4,25;*
/ g°°d common $4,50 a 5 ; brown $6,50 a 7 and fine
brown $8 a 9.
Ohio—Common $4,50 a 5; good common mid
dling $5,50 a 6; good and fine red $6 a 9; fine
wrappery $lO a 15 ;• and yellow $lO a 16.

EY an act of Assembly passed May 8, 1850, the
Directors of the Common Schools of the city
of Lancaster are authorized to admit,into theHigb
Schools of the city, pupils from the Townships and
Boroughs of the county. They can now accom
modate Thirty such Boys in tho male and Twenty
Girls in the female school; and will accordingly
receive that number, if application be made before
the first Monday of February, 1852.
The course of instruction in the Male .School

of Geography and English Grammar , with attention
to Orthography, Reading and Writing; and careful
instruction in Composition, Declamation , History,
Rhetoric , Logic and Mentaland Moral Philosophy.

siology, by familiar lectures to the more advanced
classes, illustrated by proper apparatus and followed
by daily examinations of the pupils.
In the Female School the course will be as nearly
similar to that in the male, as the circumstances and
wants of the sex will admit. It will include the
same instruction in the Natural Sciences, and will
also embrace Drawing. ,
Applicants for admission, of both sexes, must be
children of citizens of Lancaster county ; if males
be over 14; and females over 13 years of age'.; and
be well grounded in Orthography, Reading, Arith
metic, Geography and English Grammar, and write
a fair hand.
Pupils from the county will be subject to the
same discipline as to study and conduct, as those
of the city; and will be expected to pursue all the
studies of the grade or class to which they may
belong, except in the Languages, all oranyof which
may be omitted at the option of the parent or
guardian.
The TERMS are $l5 per annum, payable half
yearly in advance, without any extra charge; but
pupils are to find their own books and stationery.
This sum is the same as the average cost'lo the
City of the instruction of resident pupils.
There are now three competent Instructors and
about 100 pupils in each of the schools, with the
foregoing course of studies in operation. The num
ber of teachers will be increased to four when nec
essary.
The scope and system of training is designed to
enable the pupils to perform active duties of
life with credit to themselves, should they enter no
higher institution oflearning; or to fit young men
to enter any college.in the land, considerably ad
vanced,-should: they so desire. It is also especially
intended to aid in the preparation of Teachers.
Should more than the above number apply, per
sons designed lor the profession of teaching will
be prefered.
