it is unrivalled for efficacy as well as immediate .ac

the convalescing patient who needs a gentle tonic.
In a Southern climate, where the relaxation of the

We have* uniformly retrained'from recommend

cines ol the day, unless thoroughly convinced ot
‘heir value. Among those we consider worthy ol
notice is the German Bitters, invented by Doctor
Hoofland. and prepared by Dr. Jackson, in Phila

superior virtues of this meoicine have been tested,-
has fallen under our observation. During the last
summer, a son of Mr- Abm.Urabill, of this conn

he purchased a bottle of the Bitters, und alter

•READ FURTHER A FEW FACTS.
From »ne Weldon Herald, published at Weldon,
N. C-, Junuary 24, 1850, which said—
PATENT MEDICINES,
It is tiery seldom that we make any allusion to
Patent Medicines, either approving or otherwise.
Unfortunately for the country, and for honest and
conscientious inventors and venders of these med
icines, me land is becoming flooded with quack
preparations, th a are made alone for profit and are
lit not even for the dogs. In this state of things
it is hard to tell which are, and which are not
worth having. If a person gets an indifferent med
icine the first time he purchases, he is very apt to
condemn me whole of them and buy no more, and
inventors must only blame those of their number,
[who ignorantly combine plain medicines together
tor the purposed making money,] (or the ill suc
cess which attends .he efforts of the deserving.
VVe believe Dr. C. M. Jackson’s Hoofland’s
German Bitters to be a most excellent medicine,
and one that should be highly popular in these
days of Temperance; for they are altogether Veg
etable in their composition, without one drop of
Alcoholic Spirits in them. This medicine is inno
cent, Lot strengthening in its effects, ana richly
deserving of an unbounded popularity, which,
when it becomes known, it will, no doubt, fully
enjoy.
Judge M. M. Noah said, in his Weekly Messen
ger, January 6, 1850.
Dr . Ilonjland's German Bitters. —Here is a
preparation which the leading presses in the Union
appear to be unanimous in recommending, and the
reason is obvious. It is made after a prescription
furnished by one of the most celebrated physicians
of modern times-the late Dr. Christopher Wil
helm Hoofland, professor to the University of Je
na, private physician to the King of Prussia, and
one of the greatest medical writers Germany lias
ever produced. • He was emphatically the enemy
of humbug, and therefore a medicine of which he
was the inventor and endorser may be confidently
relied on- He specially recommended it in Liver
Complaint, Dyspepsia, Debility, Vertigo, Acidity
of the soinach, Constipation, and all complaints
arising from a disordered condition ol the stomach,
the liver and the intestines- Nine Philadelphia
papers express their conviction of its excellence,
and several of the editors speak of its effects from
their own individual experience. Unde.* these cir
cumstances, we feel warranted, not only in calling
the attention of our readers to the present proprie
tor’s [Dr. C. M. Jackson’s] preparation, but in
recommending the article to ihe afflicted.
MORE EVIDENCE.

icine long e&fob shed, universally prized, and
which has met the approbation of the faculty
itself.
Evidence upon evidence has been received (like
the foregoing) trom all sections of the Union the
last three years, an dike strongest testimony in its
favor, is, that there is more of n usedln the practice
of ilic regular Physic ans of Philadelphia than all

All Mankind Desire to be Free!
Free trade and tailors* rights!—
A few short years ago, the person who wished
to make a genteel appearance, was restra ned from
the want of means, arising from the' fact that the
customer tailor charged four prices for his clothing.
It was at this time the Cheap Cash Clothing Store
started in order to accommodate the public with as
good clothing as the customer tailor made, at almost
one-halt the price. This effort was appreciated by
the public, and the great encouragement received
induced the proprietor to be first in the field to
adopt the principle of “ large sales and small
profits,” .and to extend his business beyond a paral
lel jp the history of trqde. The plan adopted was
to give as good Clothing as could be made in any
establishment at one-half the usual price. Success
crowned this effort also. Then, with extended
means, he undertook a further reduction, by buying
his materials from first hands, and was satisfied
with a very small profit. The public fully appre
ciated this effort, and came in crowds to purchase
clothing of a superior order, brought within the
reach of all by such very reasonable prices. With
these facilities, it soon became evident that the
cheap cash clothing room became too small to ac
commodate his greatly increased number of custo
mers. In fact, the whole public opened their eyes
with astonishment to see the rise and progress of
this effort fo- their accommodation, and in the tak
ing of the spacious building, which has opened out
a mighty Hall, in their behalf, where the principle
first adopted by this house of “quick sales and small
profits,” is carried o,ut to its utmost extent. This
building is sufficiently capacious to accommodate
all who may call, and a stocn sufficiently large to
satisfy every demand, whether it be a single gar
ment or a wagon load. And such are now the
facilities of this extensive Hall as to enable him to
defy all competition either from this or any other
city, fully satisfied that it is an utter impossibility to
furnish cheaper or better clothing in the whole
world than is now furnished at the Great Lancaster
Hall of Fashion and Clothing Bazaar of JOSEPH
GORMLEY, situated in North Queen street, three

SICKLY AND UNHAPPY WIVES.
Extract of a Letter from a Gentleman in Dayton, O.
- “Dayton, May 1, 1847.
“Du. A. M. Mauriceau —My Dear Sir: 'The
Married Woman’s Private Medical Companion/ for
which 1 enclosed one doHar to your address, came
safely to hand. I would not have tumbled yon with
these few lines, bat that 1 am impelled by a sense
of gratitude, for myself and wife, to give utterance
to our sincere and heartfelt emotions.
“My wife has been perceptibly sinking for some
three years or more, in consequence of her great an
guish and suffering some months before and during
confinement; every successive one .more and more
debilitated and prostrated her, putting her life in im
minent danger, aud which was, on.the last occasion,
despaired of. I supposed that this state of things was {
inevitable, and resigned myself to meet the worst.
At this time (now about two months) I heard
book highly spolteu’-of. as containing some matter*
reaching my case. On its receipt and perusal, I con
not express to you the relief it afforded my distressed
mind aud the joy its'pages imparted to my wife, on
learning that the great discovery of M. M. Deso*
meaux provided a remedy. It opened a prospect to
me which I little conceived was possible. No pecu
niary consideration can over repay the obligation* I
am under to you for having been the means of im
parting to ub the matters contained in ' The Married
WomaiA Private Medical Companion.’ But for
this, ere another year would have passed over my
head, in all humau probability my wife would have
been in her grave, and my children left motherless.'

Competence and Health.
“Lancaster, Pa., Oct. 24, 1847.
“My Dear Sir: I know you will have the kind
ness to bear with me in encroaching upon your time,
while I acknowledge (in behalf of myself and wife)
the obligations we feel ourselves under to you in hav
ing made known certain matters, contained in your
most invaluable ‘ Married Woman’s Private Medical
Companion.’ It has been worth its weight in gold
to me. If I express myself ratber warmly, yon’ will
see that I can not do so too warmly, when I inform
you of the extent to which I have, through it, been
benefited. I will state my situation when I obtained
your book through the merest curiosity I look upon
it as one of the most fortunate events of my life. I
had been married some ten years, and was the father
of seven children. I was long struggling unceasingly,
to the end that 1 might gain a moderate competency,
but the results of my utmost exertions at the end left
me about where I was at the beginning of each year;
and that only, with the most stinted economy, suffi
cing with barely the necessaries of life. Finally, this
constant effort was beginning to have itß effect upon
my health: I felt less capable to endure its continu
ance, while I felt the necessity of perseverance.
" This constant, unceasing straggle on my part wu
imperative, in consequence of tne prostrated condi
tion of my wife /with occasional intermission) for,six
vears, much of the time confined to her bed, and of
course incapable of taking tl>e charge and manage
ment of household affairs. Her condition arose from
causes of which I.was ignorant. Oh! what would
I have given had I the six years to live over again I
Whatwould.my wife have given to have beep spared
the long days and still longer nights prostrate on a
bed of sickness! all of which would have been
avoided, had I then seen a copy of ‘The Married
Woman’s Private Medical Companion.’”

rivata Medical Companion' some years ago. how
mach misery I might have escaped ! I have suffered
years from causes which you point out in your book,
without knowing wbßt to do. I obtained a copy, and
found ray case treated of. I trust every female will
avail herself of the information contained in its pages.”
Letters are daily received of this character, unne
cessary to present.
To those yet unmarried, but contemplating mar
riage, or perhaps hesitating as to the propriety of
incurring the responsibilities attendant upon it, the
importance of being possessed of the revelations con
tained in these pages, so intimately involving their
future happiness, can not be appreciated*
It is, of coarse, impracticable to convey more fully
the various subjects treated of, as they are of a.na
ture strictly intended for the married, or those con
templating marriage; neither is it necessary, since
it is every one’s duty to become possessed of knowl
edge whereby tbe sufferings to which a wife, a moth-,
er, or a sister, may be subject, can be obviated.
