Mathematics!!
HAVING greatly extended and improved my
new mode of computing figures, and wishing
to extend them among business men generally, in
duces me to address the following circular to the
public :
First By this Rule, a person having any know
ledge of figures can give the.sum total-of any col
umn, as fast as the answer can be written. The
sum total of a lengthy column’of dollars and cents,
is giv6n by this rule in a second of time. It matters
not what length the column is, or what breadth, the
sum total is given as fast as the figures can be writ
ten down. The process is not performed by adding
the figures together, but by a rule, in which certain
figures are chosen out of each column and set down.
Second—By this rule any number can be multiplied
by any number, and the product given all in one
line instantly. Illimitable sums in Division and
Fractions are performed with the like rapidity.
Interest, at any per cent., and for any given time,
is performed by this rule in a second. Extention
such as so many yards, at a certain price per yard
—is carried out instantly, whether fractions or whole
numbers. In 'fact all arithmetical rules can be per
formed in the same manner. These rules can be
learned in hall an hour, by any person having the
printed rules.
{KrAny person enclosing Five Dollars by letter
to me, post-paid, through the Lancaster Post Office,
will receive a full set of these rules by return of
mail. Or any person sending three subscribers will
receive a copy of these rules, gratis.
ftCr All Editors copying the above, and sending a
paper containing the same to the subscriber, shall
receive a. set of my rules free.

Valuable Lauds in Prince William
County, Virginia, for Sale.
THE subscribers are authorized-to sell a trof
land, lying in Prince William County, Vji.-.nia,
containing over
TWO THOUSAND ACRES.
It is bounded in part by the Potomac and Chopa
wamsie creek, upon which it presents a water front
of about one ami three quarter miles, and the upper
part of the tract is but a short distance from Quan
tico creek. About six hundred acres are
CLEARED LAND,
well adapted to agriculture, and the residue is in
wood, of which it is estimated there are Irom 65
to 70,000 cords, mostly of oak and pine, to which
the facilities of water carriage add great value.
The buildings consist of seven or eight
LOG HOUSES,
such as are common to that part of the country. The
land is abundantly watered with fine springs, and
it is supposed to be especially adapted to the rais
ing of early fruits and vegetables; and as two steam
boats pass the place daily, and sailing vessels con
stantly, these productions may be profitably and
speedily sent to market.
There are strong indications of an abundance of
hematile IRON ORE, samples of which have been
analysed” and found to yield 48 per cent, of metal.
Indications of other metals have been found in the
neighborhood, and may be present also here.
On that part of the tract bounding on the riyer
there exists a most
VALUABLE FISHERY,
equal to any in that neighborhood, and during the
winter the river and creeks abound with canvass
back ducks, and other wild fowl, for which the
Potomac is so justly celebrated.
This tract of land presents a rare opportunity for
a combination of several families who desire* to
provide homes at a small cost, and at the same
time the opportunity of becoming surely prosperous.

Ho!. For F. J. Kramph’s “Oak Hall Clothing Store!”
Let more ambitious poets than myself,
Who write for praise, for patronage, nor pelf,
Employ their powers, in penning lofty rhymes,
Of other countries and of other climes ;
Through fancy’s realms they may choose to roam
My muse, more humble, fondly thinks of home !
Hail, Lancaster! progressive'city, hail!
Where honest industry and wealth prevail !
How rapid is thy growth ! each passing day
Brings new improvements forth in bright array,
Where once bleak lots and stagnant pools were seen
“And desolation saddened all the green”—
Three giant Cotton Mills may now be found,
And handsome dwellings ranged in order round.
Within the compass of a single year, s
We see a splendid County-Jail appear.
The reign of penny-candles now is o’er,
Bright burning Gas illumines every Store ;
No more the traveller has to grope his way,
The night is made as brilliant as the day ;
And e’re the waning of another year,
We’ll have a splendid first-class College here,
And last, not least, ’fore eighteen fift)-one,
If that is-finished what is now begun,
Three Churches mdre whose morning bells thrp’ tiihe
Will ring a very merry Christmas chime :
Much has been done, but much remains to do,
A Court House soon wc’Jl have an Markets new.
But after you have taken your wonted round

AND CONSUMPTION.
THE annals of medical science, affording as they
do ample proof of the power and value of me
dicinal agents, have furnished no examples to com
pare with the salutory effects produced by “Ayer’s
Cherry Pectoral.”
The remarkable cures of diseases of the lungs
which have been realized by its use, attested as
they are by many prominent professors and physi
cians in this and foreign lands, should encourage
the afflicted to persevere with the strong assurance
that the use of the Cherry Pectoral will relieve and
ultimately cure them. ‘
We present to the public unsolicited testimonials
from some of the first men in our country, upon
whose judgment and experience implicit confidence
may be placed.
Dr. Perkins , President Vermont Medical College ,
one of the most learned and • intelligent physicians
in the country, considers it a ‘Composition of rare
excellence for the cure of that formidable disease,
consumption.”
Norwich, April 26, 1846,
Dr. J. C. Ayer—Dear Sir:—Agreeable to the
request of youragent, we will cheerfully state what
we have known ,of the effects of your Cherry
Pectoral and they have been astonishing indeed.
Mrs. Betsey Streeter had been afflicted with a se
vere and relentless cough, which reduced her very
low; so low that little hope could be .entertained of
her recovery. Numerous remedies had been tried
without effect, before the Cfurry Pectoral. And
that last cured her. George Esq., had
to our knowledged been afflicted with Asthma, for
eleven years and grown yearly worse, until the Cher
ry Pectoral has now removed the disease and he is
as free from any of its symptoms aswe are. The
Rev. Mark Dane had been so severely attacked
with the Bronchitis, as to disable ihim from his
duties, and nothing had afforded himj relief until I
(Mr. Thorning,) carried him a bottle of your Pec
toral which cured him at once, and he now officia
tes as usual in his place. -
' These are three of the cases in which we have
known it successful but never io fail. We have
great pleasure in certifying to the facts; and are
respected sir, your humble servants,
Rev. David Thorning,
Hon. Joseph Battes.
Among the distinguished authorities who have
given their names to recommend Cherry Pectoral
as the best remedy that is known for the Affections
of the Lungs are ‘ The London Lancet,’ ’'Canadian
Journal of Medical Science,’ * Boston Medical and
Surgical Journal,’ ‘Charleston (S. C.j Medical Re
view,’ * New Jersey Medical Reporter,* Prof. Web
ster, Harvard College; Prof. Bartlett,Transylvania
University of Medicine ; President Perkins, Ver
mont Medical College; Dr. Valentine Mott, New
York City ; Parker Cleaveland, Bowdoin College ;
Prof. Butterfield, Wi'loughby College, Ohio ; Prof.
Braithwaite, Leeds (Eng.) Medical School;. Sir
Richard Kane, Queen’s College, Ireland; Prof.
Rosenbaum, Leipsic.
The public have but to know the virtues ajid as
tonishing success of the ‘CHERRY PECTORAL,’
in curing diseases of the Lungs, when they will
feel Secure from these dangers, whenever this rem
edy can be obtained. 1
