all the ills the human family and subject to. Every
respectable Physician has his particular branch, in

his time and study. Dr. Hunter is known to be

CELEBRATED .GERMAN BITTERS,

120 Arch Street , Phila.-
Their power over the above diseases is not ex
celled—if equalled—by any other preparation in
the Uniied Stales, as the cures attest, in many
cases after skilful physicians had failed.
These Bitters are worthy the of inva
lids. Possessing great virtues in the rectification
of diseases of the Liver and lesser glands, exerci
sing the most searchiog powers in weakness and
affections of the digestive organs, they are withal,
safe, certain and pleasant.

We have uniformly'retrained from recommend*
ing to the public any of the various Patent Medi
cines of tne day, unless'thoroughly convinced of
their value. Among those we consider worthy of
notice is the German Bitters, invented by Doctor
Hoofland, and prepared by Dr. Jackson, in Phila
delphia. One instance in particular, in which the
superior virtues of this meaicihfe have been tested,
has fallen under our observation. During the last
summer, a son of Mr- Abm. Crabill, of this coun
ty, was very seriously afflicted with Liver Com
plaint, and after trying in vain various remedies,
he purchased a bottle of the Bitters, and afier
using it, was so much relieved of hts distressing
malady, Uiat he procured another bottle, and is re
stored eniirely to health.
READ FURTHER A FEW FACTS.
B rom the Weldon Herald, published ait Weldon,
N. C-, January 24. 1850, which said —
It is very seldom that we make any allusion to |
Patent Medicines, either approving or otherwise, j
Unfortunately for the country, and for honest and i
conscientious inventors and venders of these med- !
icines, the land is becoming flooded with quack !
preparations, that are made alone for profit and are j
fit not even for the dogs. In this state, of things v ’
it is hard to tell which are, and which are not ;
worth having. If a person gets an indifferent med- t
icine the first time he purchases, he is very apt to
condemn the whole of them and buy no rfiore, and
inventors must only blame those of their number,
[who ignorantly combine plain medicines together ■
tor the purpose of making money,] for the ill sue- i
cess which attends .he efforts of the deserving.
We believe Dr. C. M. Jackson’s Hoofland’s !
German Bitters to be a most .excellent medicine, i
and one that should be highly popular in these :
days of Temperance ; for they are altogether PVg. i
ctable in their composition, without one drop of !
Alcoholic Spirits in them. This medicine is inno- 1
cent, bnt strengthening in its efforts, and richly •
deserving of an unbounded popularity, which, 1
when it becomes known, it will, no doubt, fully
enjoy.
Judge M. M. Noah said, in his Weekly Messen* :
ger, January 6,1850 i
Dr.' Hoofland's German Bitters. —Here is a
preparation which the leading presses in the Union !
appear to be unanimous in recommending, and the
reason is obvious. It is made afier a prescription
furnished by one of the most celebrated physicians i
of' modern limes-ihe late Dr. Christopher Wil- i
helm Hoofland, professor to the University of Je- ’
na. private physician to the King of Prussia, and !
one of the greatest medical writers Germany has
ever produced. He was emphatically the enemy
of humbug , and therelore a medicine of which he
was the inventor and endorser may be confidently
relied on- He specially recommended It in Liver
Complaint, Dyspepsia, Debility, Vertigo, Acidity
of the somach, Constipation, and all complaints
arising from a disordered condition of the stomach,-
the liver and the intestines. Nine Philadelphia
papers express their conviction of its excellence,
and several of the editors speak of its effects from
; their own individual experience. Unde.* these cir
j cumstance?, we feel warranted, not only in calling
the attention of our readers to the present proprie
tor’s [Dr. C. M. Jackson's] preparation, but in
recommending the article to the afflicted.
MORE EVIDENCE.
The Philadelphia Saturday Gazette, the best
family newspaper published in the United States.
The ediior says of
DR. HOOFLAND’S GERMAN BITTERS:
It is seldom that we recommend what are termed
Patent Medicines to the confidence and patronage
of our readers; and, therefore, when we recom
mend Dr* Hooflaird’s German Bitters, we wish it
to be distinctly understood that <ve are not speak*
ing of the nostrums of the day, that are noised
about for a brief period and then forgotten after it
has done its guilty race of mischief, but of a med
icine long estab shed, universally prized, and
which has met the approbation of the faculty
itself.
Evidence upon evidence has been received (like
the foregoing) from all sections of the Union the
last three years, andthe strongest testimony in its
favor, is, that there is more of it used in the practice
of the regular Physicians of Philadelphia than all
other nostrums combined, a fact that can easily be
established, and fully proving that a scientific prep
aration wi'l meet with their quiet approval when
presented even in this form.
That this medicine will cure Liver Complaint
and Dyspepsia, no one can doubt after using it as
directed. It acts specifically upon the stomach and
liver ; it is preferable to calomel in all billious dis
eases —the effect is immediate. They can be ad*
ministered to female or infant with safety and
reliable benefit, at any lime.
BEWARE OF COUNTERFEITS.
This medicine hos attained that high character
which is necessary for all medicines to attain to
induce counterfeiters to put forth a spurious article
at the risk of the lives of those who are innocently
deceived.
Look well to the marks of the genuine.
They have the written signature ot C. M. Jack
son upon the wrapper, and the name blown in the
bottle, without which they are spurious .

THE CAUSES AND THE REMEDY!
Many and many a wife endures years of bodily

How important that the causes should be known

confinement; every successive one more and more
debilitated and prostrated her, putting her life in im
minent danger, and which was, on the last occasion,
despaired of I supposed that this state of things was
inevitable, and resigned myself to meet the worst.
At this time {now about two months) I heard yonr
book highly spoken - of. as containing some matters
reaching my case. On' its receipt and perusal, I can
not express to you the relief it afforded my distressed
mind and the joy its pages imparted to my-wife, on
learning that the greet discovery of M. M. Deso
meaux provided a remedy. It opened a prospect to
me which I little conceived was possible. No pecu
niary consideration can ever repay the obligations I
am under to you for having been the means qf im
parting to us the matters contained in ‘ The Married
Woman’k, Private Medical Companion.' , But for
this, ere another year would have passed over-my
head, in all huinau probability my wife would have
been in her grave, and my children left motherless.’

Competence and Health.
Lancaster, Pa., Oct. 24, 1847.
“My Dear Sir: I know you will have the kind
ness to bear with me in encroaching upon your time,
while I acknowledge (in behalf of myself and wife) >
the obligations we feel ourselves under to you in hav
ing made known certain matters, contained in your
most invaluable ‘Married Woman’s Private Medical
Companion.' It has been worth its weight in gold
to me. If I express myself rather warmly, you will
see that 1 can not do so too warmly; when I inform
you of the extent to which I have, through it, been
benefited. I will state my situation when I obtained
your book through the merest curiosity I-look upon '
it as one of the most fortunate events of my life. 1
had been married some ten years, and was the father
of seven children. I was long struggling unceasingly,
to the end that I might gain a moderate competency,
but the results of my utmost exertions at the end left
me about where I was at the beginning of each year;
. and that only, with the most stinted economy, suffi
i cing with barely the necessaries of life. Finally, this
constant effort was beginning to have its effect upon
; my health : I felt less capable to endure its continu
! ance, while I felt the necessity of perseverance.
■ “ This constant, unceasing struggle on nay part was
J imperative, in consequence of the prostrated condi
! tion of my wife (with occasional intermission) for six
j years, much of the time confined to her bed, and of
I course incapable of taking the charge and manage
ment of household affairs. Her condition arose from
causes of which I was ignorant. Oh! what would
. I have given had I the six years to live over again ! s
' What would my wife have given to have been spared
i the long days and still longer nights prostrate on a
; bed of sickness! all of which would have been
1 avoided, had I then seen a copy of * The Married
Woman's Privjte Medical Companion.”'

DANGEROUS DELIVERIES,
OBSTRUCTIONS, IRREGULARITIES, &C.
How many are suffering from obstruction .or irreg
ularities peculiar tp the female system, which un
dermine their health, the‘effects of which they are
ignorant, and for which their delicacy forbids, seeking
medical advice! How many suffer from prolapsus
uteri (falling of the womb), or from Jluor-albus (weak
ness, debility, &c., &c.)! How many are in constant
agony for many months preceding confinement! How
many have difficult if not dangerous deliveries, and
whose lives are jeoparded daring such time, will find
in its pages the means of prevention, amelioration,
and relief!

To those just Married.— 1
“Philadelphia, Nov. 29, 1847.
“ Dr. A. M. Macriceau : Had I known of the im
portant matters treated of in ‘The Married Woman’s
Private Medical Companion’ some years ago, how
much misery I might have escaped ! I have suffered
years from causes which you point opt in your book,
without knowing what to do. I obtained a copy, and
found my case treated of. I trust every female will
avail herself of the information contained in its pages. 1 ’
Letters are daily received of this character, unne
cessary to present.
To those yet unmarried, but contemplating mar
riage, or perhaps hesitating as to the propriety of
incurring the responsibilities attendant upon it, the
importance of being the revelations con
tained in these pages, so intimately involving their
future happiness, can not be appreciated. 5
It is, ol course, impracticable to convey more fully
the various subjects treated ofi as they are of a na
ture strictly intended for the married, or those con
templating marriage; neither is it necessaiy, since
it is every one’s doty to become possessed of knowl
edge whereby the sufferings to which a wife, a moth
er, or a sister, may be subject, can be obviated.
