    Difficulty with Portugal.
The Washinglcn correspondent of the "N. York
Tribune, writes as follows:
Mr. Clay our Charge de Affairs at Lisbon, is
looked for in this country "before a great while.-
So soon as he arrives, the President will transmit
a special message to Congress, upon the subject of
our present relations with the Portuguese Domin
ions, that will smell considerably strong of gun
powder. The difficulties that exist, grow out of
tbe.continued refusal of the Portuguese Government
to pay the indemnities to American citizens, with*
out pretendiug to give an excuse for such injustice.
Things have been brought to such a crisis, that
there is no alternative but payment or war.

All Mankind Desire to be Free!
EREE TRADE AND TAILORS’ RIGHTS!—
A few short years ago, the person who wished
to make a genteel appearance, was restrained from
the want of means, arising from the fact that the
customer tailor charged four prices for hia clothing.
It was at this time the Cheap Cash Clothing Store
started in order to accommodate the public with as
good clothing as the customer tailor made, at almost
one-halt the price. This effort was appreciated by
the public, and the great encouragement received
induced the proprietor to be first in the field to
adopt the principle of “large sales and small
profits,” and to extend his business beyond a paral
lel in the history of trade. The plan adopted was
to give as good Clothing as could be made in any
establishment at the usual price. Success
crowded this effort also. Then, with extended
means, he undertook a further reduction, by buying
his materials from first hands, and was satisfied'
with a very small profit. The public fully appre
ciated this effort, and came in crowds to purchase
clothing of a superior order, brought within the
reach of all by such very reasonable prices. With
these facilities, it soon became evident that the
cheap cash clothing room became too small to ac
commodate his greatly increased number of custo
mers. In fact, the whole public opened their eyes
with astonishment to see the rise and progress of
this effort for their accommodation, and in the tak
ing of the spacious building, which has opened out
a mighty Hall, in their behalf, where the principle
first adopted by this house of “quick sales and small
profits,” is carried out to its utmost extent. This
building is sufficiently capacious to accommodate
all who may call, and a stock sufficiently large'to
satisfy every demand, whether it be a
ment or a wagon load. And such are now the
facilities of this extensive Hall as to enable him to
defy all competition either lrora this or any other
city, fully satisfied that it is an utter impossibility to
furnish cheaper or better clothing in the whole
world than is now furnished at the Great Lancaster
Hall of Fashion and Clothing Bazaar of JOSEPH
GORMLEY, situated in North Queen street, three

The reign of penny-candles now is o’er,
Bright burning Gas illumines every Store ;
No more the traveller has to grope his way,
The night is made as brilliant as the day;
And e’re the waning of another year,
We’ll have a splendid first-class College here,
And last, not least, ’fore eighteen fifty-one,
If that is finished what is now begun,

Valuable Lands In Prince William
County, Virginia, for Sale.
THE subscribers are authorized to sell a tract of
land, lying in Prince William County, Virginia,
containing over
TWO THOUSAND ACRES.
It is bounded in part by the Potomac and Chopa
wamsie creek, upon which it presents a water front
of about one and three quarter miles, and the upper
part of the tract is but a short distance from Quan
tico creek. About six hundred acres are
CLEARED LAND,
well adapted to agriculture, and the residue is in
wood, of which it is estimated there are from 65
to 70,000 cords, mostly of oak and pine, to which
the facilities of water carriage add great value.
The buildings consist of seven or eight
LOG HOUSES,
such as are common to that part of the country. The
land is abundantly watered with fine springs, and
it is supposed to be especially adapted to the rais
ing of early fruits and vegetables; and as two steam
boats pass the place, daily, and sailing vessels con
stantly, these productions may be profitably and
speedily sent to market.
There are strong indications of an abundance of
hematile IRON ORE, samples of which have been
analysed and found to yield 48 per cent, of metal.
Indications of other metals have been found in the
neighborhood, and may be present also here.
On that part of the tract bounding on the river
there exists a most
VALUABLE FISHERY,
equal to any in that neighborhood, and during the
winter the river and creeks abound with canvass
back ducks, and other wild fowl, for which the
Potomac is so justly celebrated.
This tract of land presents a rare opportunity/or
a combination of several families who desire to
provide homes at a small cost, and at the same
time the opportunity ol becoming surely prosperous.

THE uniform success which has attended the use
of this preparation—its salutary effect—its pow
er to relieve and cure affections of the Lungs, have
gained for it a celebrity equalled by no other med
icine. We offer it to the afflicted with entire con
fidence in its virtues, and the full belief that it will
subdue and remove the severest attacks of disease
upon the throat and Lungs. These results, as they
become publicly known, very naturally attract the
attention of medical men and philantropists every
where. What is their opinion of CHERRY PEC
TORAL may be seen in the following:
VALENTINE MOTT, M. D.,
Prof. Surgery Med. College, New York , says;—
“ It gives me pleasure, to certify the value and
efficacy of Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral, which I consider
peculiarly adapted-to cure diseases of the Throat
and Lungs.”
THE RT. REV. LORD BISHOP FIELD
writes in a letter to his friend, who was fast sinking
under an affection of the Lungs“ Try the Cher
ry Pectoral, and if any medicine can give you
relief, with the blessing of God that will.”
CHIEF JUSTICE EUST.IS,
of Louisiana, writes “ That a young daughter of
his was cured of several severe attacks of Croup by
the Cherry Pectoral.”
Hartford, Jan. 26, 1848.
Dr. J. C. Ayer—Dear Sir:—Having been rescued
from a painful and dangerous disease by your med
icine, gratitude prompts me to send you this ac
knowledgment, not only in justice to you, but for
the information of others in like affliction.
A slight cold upon the lungs, neglected at first,
became so severe that spitting of blood, a violent
cough and profuse night sweats followed and fas
tened upon me. I became emaciated, could not
sleep, was distressed by my Cough, and a pain
through my chest, and in short had all the alarming
symptoms of quick consumption. No medicine
seemed at all to reach my case, until! providentially
tried your Cherry Pectoral, which soon relieved
and now has cured me.
Yours with respect, £. A. STEWART.

larger part of the ume f being unable to breathe on
my bed. I had tried a great many medicines, to
no purpose, antil my Physician prescribed, as an
experiment, your Cherry Pectoral. ‘
At fir»t it seemed to make me wprse, bnt in less
than * week I began to experience the most grati
fying relief from its use $ and now, in four weeks,
the disease is entirely removed. I can sleep on
ray bed with comfort, and enjoy a state of health
which I never expected to enjoy. -
