Shannon asd tub Law Business in Cal ifornia.—A letter from California published in the last St. Clairsville Gazette, contains the following in regard to the law firm of Gov. Shannon & Co. and the law business generally in California : “ The firm has been doing a heavy business, which cannot tail to realize them from to one hundred thousand dollars per annum. I here never was so great a field* open for the profession o law as California presents, ami must continue to .present; especially is this the fact in the city of Sail Francisco, where there is so great an amount ol Commercial business done. The litigation that certainly must arise out of titles to real estate will be immense. The fees are large lor ordinary busi ness and they are increased with the importance o the case. For deeds, mortgages, and other such in struments of writing, the fee is from twenty five to fifty dollars. An opinion generally costs the client about one half of his claim, if his claim be hundred dollars or upwards. Another thing about the practice (jere is, the pay is in hand.” A Polish Nobleman.— Cnpt. Sebaldus K ■Schmeling committed suicide at Lynchburg, \a, on the 15th ult. It is said that he was in the French service in Africa, and commanded a compam of Polish dragoons under Bern, in the Hungarian war,.and fled to America after Gorgey’s surrender. (al)c Markets.
