Committee, are requested to meet at the Merchants ,
Hotel, in Philadelphia, on TIittWDAY, the 6th of
September instant, as business of importance will
come before the Committee. A full attendance is

J. GLANCY JONES, Chairman.
RESUMPTION OF WORK ON THE NORTH BRANCH
CANAL.—We are sincerely gratified to learn, not
withstanding our apprehensions to the contrary,
that the report of the • accounting officers will au
thorize an immediate resumption of a portion of
the work on the North Branch canal. This work,
when completed, will benefit more the general in
terests of the state, and add more to the revenue,
than the expenditure of a like amount of money
has ever done heretofore. That the means exist to
secure its completion within the coming two years.
we endeavored to show in our last number, and we
believe have shown, to the satisfaction of every
man who has investigated the subject, without add
ing one dollar to the public debt. Let the friends
of the measure pursue a wise and judicious course,
and succes is certain. What that course ought to
be, we have heretofore clearly indicated. To our
friends in various parts of the state, who are not
familiar with the locality and advantages of the
work, and who have heretofore been so much de
ceived by estimates and glowing reports which
proved false, we say, be not alarmed at the resump
tion of this work. We have not exaggerated its
importance, nor over-estimatedits advantages. All
we have claimed for it will, if it is properly man
aged, be more than realized, and on this we are
willing to stake any reputation we may have.—

Mr. S. W..Fo d wle--Dear Sir; A desire to benefit
the afflicted, has induced me to make the following
statement of facts. My son, now seventeen years
of age, has been afflicted, during his whole life,
with a constant cough and pain in the chest, accom
panied with night sweats and a hectic fever, which
produced great emacinution and debility. During
this time he ivas attended by many physicians of the
'highest repute, whose prescriptions gave but tem
porary relief. All our neighbors who saw him
regarded . him as one who was rapidly approaching
au early . and premature grave. I was prevailed
upon by a friend to try WISTHR'S DALSAM OF
WILD CHERRY. Hecommenced its use, and the
Tian bottle gave him astonishing relief, and after
using fou- bottles, his disease was overcome, and he
was restored to sound and permanent health.

Wortz's Submerged Patent Watr Wheels.
We have purchased the patent right for the
above valuable improvement for this county, and
also shop rights for the counties of Dauphin, Leba
non, Berks and Chester. We have a number of
certificates in our possession, but we do not deem
it necessary to submit them to the public, the origi
nals of which may be seen by calling at the works.
We beg leave, however, to call public attention to
the following letter, addressed to a citizen of this
county by the superintendent of an extensive manu
facturing establishment in Franklin county:
CHAMBER/BMW, April 28, 1849.
MR. HENRY E. LEDIAN:—Your favor of the 25th
inst., is at hand, and in reply say that the Grind
stones we run with Wortz's wheel are from 5 to 6
feet high, 9 to 12 inches thick, weighing from 3 to
5000 lbs. We formerly used an undershot wheel
12 feet wide and 14 feet high. Our head in an
ordinary stage of the water is about 3 feet, 3 or 4
inches. Sometimes much less than that. With
the old wheel we run two grindstones. In the same
place we have now four of Wortz's wheels (3 36
and 1 40 inches,) running four grindstones and one
trip hatilmer weighing about SO lbs. with less water
and doing more work in the same time. In regard
to the quality of the wheel for the purpose of
grinding, it is far superior to any I haves ever used
or seen used, and for a low head I believe it is the
'best wheel in use—during the whole winter (which
has been unusually cold) we have not been affected
at all with the ice, and in high water at a stage
which would stop the old wheel entirely, we now
find no inconvenience from back water. Any fur
ther information on the subject I will be happy to
communicate, or it you could make it convenient
to visit Chambersburg I will take great pleasure in
showing you the wheels. Respectfully, yours,
THOS. CARLILE
