LATER FROM SANTA FE. Col. Fremont's Expedition---All Reported to have Perished ex— _ cept the Colonel! Sa•. Loris, March 29. • Intelligence from Santa Fe to Feb. 2d, has been received at Independence, Missouri. The Republi can contains letters from Taos, which represent 'the winter as having been so very severe, that Col. Fremont, while passing through one of the moun tain torges, lost 130 mules in one night Being then left on foot he - cameto the conclusion hat it. was impossible to proceed further, and final ly he despatched three men to seek the nearest set tlement and procure succor.. This party not retur ning in twenty days, Col. Fremont started himself for Taos, distant 350 miles, where he arrived in nine days. 'Major Beale - immediately despatched a party of dragoons, with - mules and provisions, to relieve Col. Fremont's nien.' Col. Fremont, though much emaciated and worn out by anxiety and the deprivations to which he had been subjected, accompanied the dragoons. The sufferings of the party are represented to have been so very great that they were evt.n re duced to the necessity of feeding upon the bodies of their comrades, Mr. Greene, who'brought this news to Indepen deuce, left Santa Fe several days after its publics Later reports say that all of Col. Fremont's par ty perished except himself, and he is badly :frost. bitten. Our correspondent at Independence expressed doubts as to the ,correctness of this news, but we do not see with what reason. Presidential Temper. From the N. Y. Expirts, (Taylor Whg.) The following was told me by'a. Virginia friend of the President. A zealous and persevering Whig who had been put out of office as a messenger to 0,,c of the Departments to make room for an out and out Locofoco, and he told his troubles to the Presi dent, who said, "Go to the Secretary and he will right you." "But please give me a line to the Secretary," said the applicant. Gen. Taylor.—lt is against my rule. Applicant—l beg you will grant me this favor. Gen. Taylor.—l cannot, and it is not necessary. Applicant—Let my case be an exception. Gen. Taylor.—(Very rind a little angry)—l will not. Mr. Perseverance, however, would not take far an answer, and again entreated, with a recital of his wrongs, and a re-statement of the fact that Mr. W— hall his place. Whereupon, General Taylor, provoked beyond endurance, with a Buena Vista look, and a "never surrender - tone of voice, cried out, "Sir, sin, you and Mr. W. may go to the d—l." General Taylor never swears worse than this, and no doubt, regrets the provocation to say as much, and the language used a great deal more. But there is a point be yond which patience cannot go. (Front the Pennsylvanian.) Health •of Judge Longstreth We have been favored with the following note from the physician of this genqman. The numer ous friends of Judge L. will be rejoiced to hear that the prospect of his restoration to health is so flat tering To the Editor! of the Pennsylvanian: Many inquiries having been made by the friends' . of Judge Longstreth in. regard' to his health, and whether he will be able to resume the duties of Canal Comrhissioner,-1 am willing to state, that in my opinion, the Judge is : gradually recovering his former health. Although several circumstances have occurred to retard it, he is now convalescing, and probably when the weather becomes more set -fled; will be able to resume his duties. CHARLES NOBLE, M. 1/ Phila. 3d mo. 31st, 18.19, Beauty . of Jewesses. lh is related that CHATEAIf IIItIAND, on returning frOm his Eastern travels, was asked if hi. , could as sign• a reason why the woman of the Jewish me were so, much handsomer than the men, when he 101 the following one : "Jewesses," he said, " have escaped the curer which alighted on their fathers, husband', and Room. Nut a Juwems wne to he Keen among the crowd of priecte mid rabble who insulted the Son al God, erattrfting hint, crowning with tbnrun, uud tihject , ing hint to infinity and the agonies of the 111/10,- The women of Judea believed li t the saviour, anti assisted and soothed him under unction. A wo man of Bethany poured on his head precious rant meat, w hi c h she kept in a ease of alabaster, The sinner annointed his feet with perfumed oil, mid wiped them with her hair. Christ on his part ex tended mercy to the Jewesses. He liaised from the dead the son of the widow of Plain, Martha's brother Lazarus. He cured Simon's mother-in-law, and the woman who touched the he — of—his-garment. To the Samaritan woman he was a spring of living water, and a compassionate Judge to the woman in adultery. The daughters of Jerusalem wept over him, the holy women accompanied him to Calvary; brought him spices; and weeping, sought him in the sepulchre. 'Woman, why weepest thou?' His first appearance after the resurrection was IQ Mary Magdalene. He said to her, Mary: At the sound of his voice Mary's eyes were opened, and she answered 'Master.' The reflection of some beautiful ray must have rested on the brow of the :Jewess." The Bible in Italy. The Rev. Dr. Baird, in the March number of his magazine, announces the receipt of intelligence from Italy of the most interesting and cheering nature. A Bible Society, auxiliary to the British and Foreign Bible Society, was formed in one of the chief cities in that country in the month of De cember. English, American, Swiss, French, and Italians, took part in its organization. It was a great occasion ; for although there Was no display, or eclat, no ostentatiods convoking of the people, yet the number present was highly respectable, the, zeal which influenced them was pure and ardent, and the object of their assembling together was a heavenly one. This is the first Bibl Society, as far as our knowledge extends, that has ever been formed in Italy proper. AN EMPEROR SMOKING CIGARS.—The young Emperor of Austria formed the habit of smoking in the camp in Italy, and it is said after dinner now indulges himself with a cigar. This is an immense innovation, as no member of the imperial family of Austria was ever knOwn to smoke before. The Emperor rises every day at six, and, after devoting two hours to study, transacts business with his ministers. He goes every evening to the theatre, where the artists belonging to the two theatres of the court of Vienna play alternately. -. Col. Fremont and his Party WASHINGTON, March 3S Colonel Benton:s family feel no apprehension as to the safety of Col. Fremont and the most of his party. A portion of the intelligence lately received at St. Louis, they think is correct, but not the whole of it. They are inclined to disbelieve the worst feature of the news. The Printers Forever. The Journeyman Printers of Columbus, Ohio, a few days since, Presented ASA G. DIMMOCK, Esq. Senator from Holmes county, with a gold " Com posing Rule," as a testimonial of respect for his exertions in behalf of the craft in Ohio. Senator D. is the editor of the Holmes County Farmer, a radical orthodox Democratic sheet. He is also the author of the Homestead Exemption Bill presented in the Ohio Legislature during the present session. A CAPABLE OFFICER REmovan.—The Washing ton Patriot thus speaks of the lately. removed Postmaster in that town. Mr. L. is a good Demo crat, and has been a good officer : "Mr. Leet is the first removal in the Postoffice Department, under the new administration. He has been an excellent office r—courteous and obli g ing and leaves the office with the kindest regards' of all." JOEL!? TYLER FOR FREE TRADE.—His Excellency has declared for Free Trade in a letter recently published in the Louisville Journal, dated Sherwood Forest, Va., Feb. 5, and addressed to Hamilton Smith, Louisville. i:17" "Jeems" of the Boston Post has lately per. petrated the following good thing: A little'_whig, the other day, asked one of higher station, " What is it that the paper meant abourthe inagu ration ?" The big whig told the little whig that nearly half the nation Were.. going to bore the President—and that'e the in-auger-ation." Consumption. There is, perhaps, no disease withwhich our is ffected, which sweeps off annually so many victims as that fell destroyer of .the human race--Corrsumprioir. Day after day, year after year, the insatiate'moister hurrieti to the portals of the cold and silent tomb fresh added victims to its conquest. No walk of life is sacred from it blighting influence. No age is exempt from its death-dealing shafts. The old, the middle-aged, and the young, all alike, are food for this common enemy of man kind. The white-haired Patriarch, whose life of temperance has rendered his system impervious to the attacks of other ills, and whose deeds prepared him for the enjoyments of life's calm evening, finds Corrstrarmote fasten its fangs upon its vitals, and tearing him from a world ever bright to mindi which look complacently on days well spent. _ Is there no help for the afflicted ? No preventa tive of the dangers which beset us in our changeable and fickle clime? We think there is—Wistar , s Balsam of Wild Cherry is offered to a suffering world as such. - - . Its true value and intrinsic excellence are suffi cient to " Waft on to fame" the name of its inventor, as a benefactor of our species. None is genuine unless signed I. BUTTS, on the wrapper. To be had of J. GISH & BRO., Agent. Lancaster,•April 3, 1849. • DR. S. 0. RICHARDSON'S SHERRY WINE BITTERS, the great cure for DYSPEPSIA, and the best medicine ever used for Flatulency, Heait burn, Sick Headache, Loss of Appetite, Giddiness, Nervousness, Wandering Pains, Low Spirits, Sink ing Faintness, Jaundice, and all diseases caused by an unhealthy state of the STOMACH, LIVER, OR BOWELS, (which have been justly styled the storehouses of diseases) these Bitters have proved a certain and speedy remedy. Dr. R. will be glad to refer any invalids who may call upon him (he having had permission so to do,) to persons pronodnced incur able by their physicians, who have visited him from various parts of the United States, and also many distinguished persons from the British Provinces, who have been cured by using his celebrated medicine. The peculiar character of these Bitters is most striking, their operation being more or less power ful, according to the violence of the 'disease. W hen used in appropriate quantity; in cases of slight de rangements of the stomach and bowels, caused by costiveness, or a slight bilious difficulty and the like, where nature needs assistance to prevent more serious consequences, they will scarcely be felt; on the contrary, in obstinate cases they ope rate more powerful, causing two or three evacua tions daily, until the circulating fluid becomes purified. This accomplished, they act on the sys tem in connection with our food, each part receiv ing mutual assistance until the constitution is restored to a state of health. This medicine is of such a nature that it may he taken any length of time, by invalids of any age, without injuring the system or exposing it to take cold. They preclude the necessity in most cases, of using pills, which the public are advised to take in large quantities ; by some practitioners, which serve only to debili tate the patient and doom him to be a pill-swallower to the end of his days. Lebanon, March 24, 1849 Look! Look! THERE'S a man most splendidly dressed ! that shining black cloth is surely the best—look at the turn of his Coat and the beautiful cut of it. Pray what do think such a suit may be worth ? now look at his Pants and that high buttoned Vest—how nicely arranged to show the full chest; the Pants they hang straight with a curve at the foot and fall most gracefully over the boot. He comes, and I think I know him now he is near. Hold up, John. How are you my dear,—you'll excwle me, but one word if you please; your Clothing fits with such graceful ease (I'm sincere and don't wish to tease) all of us were struck at the fit and the style,—to know where you got them is truly worth while.— Well then, gentlemen, your curiosity soon shall be gratified—these garments fit me well can't be denied; now look at the quality of the Cloth and tell me what such a suit is worth. Forty Dollars at least, was quickly said. No, replied John, but Twenty paid. Surprising, astonishing, is that really all ! Oh yes,.replied John, they come from Lan caster Hall. How is it he sells his Clothing so very cheap made so well, of good materials and fit so neat? His extensive operations in trade gives him the advantage in ready-made clothing,--he buys his goods for Cash, caretul in his selections—never makes up trash. Besides his Clothing fits as well as a man's own skin, and, giving satisfaction, in duces him to come back again. Well, what credit does he give/ say certainly some. John placed his finger on his nose—none gentlemen, none,— when you go there the CASH must come. LANCASTER HALL OF FASHIONS by JOS.
