Ketcham : Gentlemen—l consider it a duty which I not only owe to yeti, but in my fellow beings, to speak in praise of Dr. Upham's Electuary, a medicine which I think has saved my life, and restored vie to full health. For several yeats I was afflicted with Piles, together with Dyspepsia, and a general disarrangement of the ayatem. I employed differ ent physicians, with no good result, and they at last told me they could do no more for me, and said that I must die. I thus had given up all hopes of ever having my health restored, nett' I had called to mi,td the benefits that a nephew of mine in Philadelphia, (Benjamin Percival,) had derived in a severe case - of chronic dysentery, by your medicine, that I purchased a box, which, to my surprise, after taking, ; few doses, 1 received great relief, and thank God, by continuing its use, that I ant now restored to perfect health. JACOB TOWNSEND, ' THE ORIGINAL DISCOVERER OF THE Genuine Townsend Sarsaparilla. (ALB DR. TOWNSEND is now about7o years of age, and has long been known as the author and discoverer-of the Genuine Original Townsend Sarsaparilla. Being poor, lie was compelled to limit its manufacture, by which means it has been kept out of market, and the sales circumscribed to those only who had proved its Worth, and known its value. It had reached the ears ofmany, never theless, as those persons who had been healed of sore diseases, and saved from death, proclaimed its excellence ant] wonderful HEALING POWER. Knowing, many years ago, that he had, by his skill, science and experience, devised an article which would be of incalculable advantage to man kind when the means would be furnished to bring it into universal notice, when its inestimable ,irtues would be known and appreciate d. This time has come, the means are supplied ; this Grand and Unequalled Preparation is mantLfactured on the lar gest scale, and is called for th oughout the lengt and breadth of the land, esp cially as it is found incapable of degeneration or deterioration. Unlike young S. P. Townsend's, it improves with age, and never changes, but for the better; because it is prepared on scientific principles by a scientific man. The highest knowledge of Chemistry, and the latest discoveries of the art, ha'ee all been brought into requisition in the manulketure of the old Dr's Sarsaparilla. The 'Sarsaparilla Root, is well known to medical men contains many medical properties and some properties which are inert or useless, and others which if retained in preparing it foe use, produce fermentation and acid, which is injurious to the system. Some of the properties of Sarsaparilla are so volatile, that they entirely evap orate and are lost in the preparation, if they are not preserved by a'scientific progress, known only to those experienced in its manufacture. Moreover, these volatile principles, which fly off in vapor, or as an exhalation, under heat, are the very essential medical properties of the root, which give to it all its value. Any person can boil or stew the root till they get a dark colored liquid, which is more from the col oring matter in the root than from anything else; they can then strain this insipid or vapid liquid, sweeten with sour molasses, and then call it "Sar saparilla Extract or Syrup.", But such is not the article known as the GENUINE ar.p DR. JACOB TOWNSEND'S SARSAPARILLA This is so prepared, that all the inert properties of the Sarsaparilla root are first removed, every thing, capable of becoming acid or of tbrmentation, in extracted c rejected; then every particle of medical virtue is secured in a pure and cunceatra ted form; and thus it is rendered Incapable of los ing any of its valuable and healing properties. Pi e pared in this way, it is made the most powerful agent in the • CURE 01' INNUMERABLE DISKAS'ES. Hence the reason why we hour commendations on every side in its raver by men, women, and children. NVe lind it doing wonders in the cure or Consumption, Dyspepsia, and Liver Complalut, and in Rheumatism, Rcrolida, Piles, Costiveness, all Cutaneous Eruptions, Pimples, Blotches, and all affections arising rrom IMPURITY OF THE BLOOD It possesses a marvelous efficacy in all complaints arising from Indigestion, from Acidity of the Stom ach, from unequal circulation, determination of blood to the head, palpitation of the heart, cold feet and hands, cold chills and hot flashes over the body. It has not its equal in Colds and Coughs; and promotes racy expectoration and gifrifip perspi ration, relaxing strictures of the lungs, throat, and every other part. But in nothing is its excellence more manifestly seen and acknowledged than in all kinds and stages of _ _ FEMALE COMPLAINTS It works wonders in cases of Flour Albus or Whites, Falling of the Womb, Obstructed, Suppres sed, or Painful Menses, Irregularity of the mens trual periods, and the like, and it is effectual in curing all the forms of Kidney Disease. By removing obstructions, and regulating the general system, it gives tone and strength to the whole body, and thus cures all forms of Nervous Diseases and Debility, and thus prevents or relieveo a great variety of other maladies, as Spinal Irrita tion, Neuralgia, St. Vitus , Dance, Swooning, Ep ileptic Fits, Convulsions, &c. It cleanses the blood, excites the liver to healthy action, tones the stomach, and gives good diges tion, relieves the bowels of torpor and constipation, allays inflammation, purifies the skin, equalizes the circulation of the blood, producing gentle warmth equally over all parts of the body, and the insensi ble perspiration ; relaxes all strictures and tight ness, removes all obstructions, and invigorates the entire nervous system. Is not this then the medi cine you pre-eminently need / But can any of these things be said of S. P. Town - send , s inferior article I This young man's liquid is not to be COMPARED WITH THE OLD DR'S, because of one Grand Fact, that the one is incapa ble of Deterioration, and NEVER SPOILS, while the other does ; souring, fermenting, and blowing the bottles containing it into fragments; the sour, acid liquid exploding, and damaging other goods ! Must not this horrible compound be pois onous to the system ? What! put acid into a sys tern already diseased with acid? What causes Dyspepsia but acid ? Do we not all know that when tbod sours in our stomachs, what mischief it produces? flatulence, heart-burn, palpitation of the heart, liver complaint, diarrhea, dysentary, colic, and corruption of the blood f What is Scrofula but an acid humor in the body 1 What produces all the humors which bring on Eruptions of the Skin, Scald Head, Salt Rheum, Erysipelas, White Swellings, Fever Sores, and all ulcerations internal and external 1 It is nothing under heaven but an acid substance, which sours, and thus spoils all the fluids of the body, inure or less. What causes Rheumatism but a sour or acid fluid, which insinu ates itself between the joints and elsewhere, irrita ting and inflaming the delicate tissues upon which it acts 1 So of nervous diseases, of impurity of the blood, of derabged r.irculatiOns, and nearly all the ailments which affect human nature. Now is it not horrible to make and sell, and Intl nicely worse to use this Souring, Fermenting, Add Compound Of S. P. Townsend, and vet he would fain have it understood that Old Dr. Jacob Townsend's Genuine Original Sarsapa rilla, is an imitation of his inferior preparation. Heaven forbid that we should deal in an article which would bear the least resemblance to S. P. Townsend's article; and which should bring down upon the old Dr. such a mountain load of complaint and criminations from Agents who have sold, and purchasers who have used S. P. Townsend's Fer menting Compound. We wish it understood because it is the absolute troth, that S. P. Townsend's 9 article and old Dr. Jacob Townsend's Sarsaparilla are heaven-wide apart, and infinitely dissimilar; that they are unlike in every particular having not one single thing in common. AN S. P. Townsend is no doctor, add never was, is no chemist, no pharmaceutist—knows no more of medicine or disease than any other common, unscientific, unprofessional man, what guarantee can the public have that they are receiving a,genti ine scientific. medicine, containing all the virtues of the articles Used in preparing it, and which are incapable of changes which :night render them the AGENTS of Disease instead of health. But what else should be expected front one who knows nothing comparatively of medicine or dis ease ! It requires a person of some experience to cook and serve up even a common decent Mel I. now such more important is it that the persons who manufacture medicines designed for Weak Stomachs and Enfeebled Systems should know well the medical properties of plants, the best manner of securing and concentrating their healing virtues, also an extensive system, and how to adapt remedies to these diseases! It is horrible to think and to know how cruelly the afflicted arc imposed upon by presumptuous men for the sake of money ! Fortunes made out of the agonies of the sick ! and no equivalent rendered the despairing sufferers! I sin aware that this statement is so strange as to appear almost like fic tion, but it is, nevertheless, sober realitys Your Sarsaparilla is certainly a valuable medicine, and should be used by every one that is suffering as we have been. If any'disbelieve this account, they are at liberty to call at my house and have occuler de monstration. Yours &c. Wm. Towne, 1 James at. Dyspepsia. Bank Department, Albany May 10, 1845. , Dr. Townsend—Sir: I have been afflicted for several years with dyspepsia in its worst form, at tended with sourness of stomach, loss of appetite. extreme heartburn and a great aversion to all kinds of food, and weeks (what I could eat) I have been unable to retain but a small portion on toy stomach. I tried the usual remedies, but they had but little or no effect in removing the complaint. I was induced, about two months since, to try your Extract of Sarsaparilla, and I must say with little confidence: but after using nearly two bottles; I I found my appetite restored and the heartburn'en tirely removed; and I would earnestly recommend the use of it to those who have been afflicted as I have been.
