    Wonderful Escape.
On Sunday last, says the Pottsville Eniporiwn, our
friends, Major Samuel M. Mills and Mr. Daniel
Glassmire, took it sleigh ride to the new town of
Ashland, on the north side of thißroad Mountain,
in Butlertownship, about twelve miles from Potts
ville. When they reached Waiser's Broad Moun
tain House, they met 'young Mr. Wasser, who
agreed to accompany them to Ashlind. - He har
nessed into a sleigh a fine youngracing horse, (val
ued • at• $4lO to $500) and started after Messrs.
Mills and Glassmire. In passingsome sleds, young
Wasser upset his sleigh, himself and his companion
were thrown out, and his horse started to run.—
Messrs M. and G. were descending the mountain,
when looking back, they saw Wassees horse corn
ingon the full run behind them. ;. They turned out
and made way for the runaway; the horse passed
them, and about 200 yards further down, came in
contact with a drove of cattle coming to the Potts
ville market. The poor brute threw himself with
great violence on theYhead of a stout bull in the
drove. Both horns of the bull entered the horse's
body, one in the breast in front of the shoulder, the
other just behind the shoulder. One of the horns
was taken off in the body, and the horse dropped
dead instantly, in hisdeath-struggle knocking another
ox of the drove insensible upon the ground, where
he lay for some minutes as if killed by the violence
of the shock. The poor horse was unharnessed as
he lay, and his mangled carcass rolled over the
steep mountain side, food lor the wild beasts and
birds of prey.
From Me N, Y. Journal.of Commerce—Taylor paper
The Tariff of 1542:
It would seem by the vote. in the U. S. House of
Representatives last Monday, on a resolution of
Mr. Eckert, of instructing the Committee of
Ways and Means to bring in "a Bill based on the
principles of the Tariff of 1812," that the Whigs
arc again lusting 'after the leeks and onions of
Egypt. The demonstration is of no practical im
portance, as there is not the slightest probability
that any such bill will pass the Senate; still, it is
of some interest as showing what the Whigs ovoid
do if they could. It:is thus that without the possi
bility of any good resulting in any way, they shake
olf the reinfbreententS by which they have gained their
recent victory, and without whose aid, they can never
gain another, nor retain the ascendency which they
wow hold.

From the Springfield .(111) Register
On Wednesday evening, in this city, of consump
tion,
Adam Henry Diller, son of Gen. Adam Diller,
of Philadelphia, in the 30th year of his age.
Never have tne uncertainties and disappointments
of this life been more forcibly brought to our minds,
than in the death of the above estimable and talent
ed young gentleman. A little more than six weeks
since, in company with some relatives, he arrived
in this city, with the intention of remaining among
us, and devoting himself to the profession of the
law, of which he was a bright and shining member.
But while bright hopes and joyous anticipations
soon to be realized fell like a gleam of sunshine
around him—a dark cloud had settled upon his'
path—the angel of death had marked him for his
own. When coining up the Illinois river, he was
attacked with bleeding at the lungs—similar attacks
followed after reaching here, which resulted in a
violent and rapid consumption.
Like the rainbow's evanescent going,
Like the chrysalis' ephemeral glowing,
Like the storm-cloud's transient burst of light;
His youthful hopes so set in night."
* * * *
"Like the fading of the bright carnations,
Like the passage of the vocal nations,
When sere Autumn sends his wintry blast,
The youth as sudden came and passed."
*.**** • * * *
Like the grass at early daylight growing,
Like the dew-drops on it brightly glowing,
Like the growth and passage of that grass,
So did he, flourish, fade, and pass.
Thds has been cut off in the pride of manliness,
and in the midst of usefulness and honor, one of
the most promising young men olour country.—
Endowed with a commanding and highly cultivated
intellect, winning manners, kind disposition, and
generous heart, he was beloved and esteemed by
all who knew him. He has left a vacuum in the
hearts of his friends not cmly here, but in Pennsyl
vania, that cannot be filled. But amid the sadness
and gloom that surrounds, there is a consolation
in the reflection that his lotlellbtimong kind and
devoted friends, and that his pillow was smoothed
by affectionate hands, and his sufferings alleviated
by loving hearts. May He who tempers the wind
to the shorn lamb, assist his friends who are far
distant to bear this affliction with calm resignation
and Christian fortitude, and may they all meet in a
brighter and better world, where pain, and sick
ness, and death will never come.
In this City, Miss Sal'ah Strenge, in the 23d year
of her age.

Reinhardt's Patent Glass Pad Lever Truss.
THESE TRUSSES have a superiority over any
heretofore in use on account of their durability
and cleanliness. The Rupture Pad, which is con
structed of Glliss, has. a double' motion: Ist, by
revolving on its own axis, and 2d, by the Lever, by
which it is attached to the main spring. In this
way it is so adjusted as to suit the motion of the
body;and is always clean and durahle, which in
the ordinary stuffed pads is not the case. The
manifest superiority these Trusses have over others,
is, that they are more effectual in retaining the
rills in their proper place and making an curial
pressure. They can be adjusted to suit either side.
The Umbilical Truss is unsurpassed, being so
lapted as to remain perfectly secure when applied

Doctor William Steelling :—lt affords me great
pleasure to state to you that I have used your Pul

in the bret, and Bronchitis. It is about one year
since I begun the use of it. I consider it the best
article I know of for those complaints, having de
rived great benefit mysel f from it in those affections,
I have no hesitation in recommending it to all who
labor under similar diseases. I have also given it
to my little son with great advantage.

LANCASTER CITY, Pa., Oct. 2, 1848.
Dr. Win. Steelling :—I take pleasure in inform

use of your Pulmonary Syrup. I had contracted a
very severe cold, and with it a violent cough, so
that I would sometimes spit blood; in thiscondition
you found me when you gave me a bottle of your
Syrup, I had not taken half a bottle before I found
tu)self much relieved, and in fact felt like a new
man. I would recommend your Pulmonary. Syrup

town, Lancaster county, Pa.:—
Dr. Wm. Steelling—Dear Sir :—lt affords me
much pleasure to inform you of the great benefit I
have received and also in my family, from the use
of your Pulmonary Syrup. I have used it for Ca
taarrh on the Breast, and from a very few doses
have been relieved. I have also found it a certain
remedy for the Croup and all common colds. I
base sold it at my store for four years and could
give a great many instances of its success in all
diseases of the Lungs and Throat.
' Respectfully yours, R. M. JONES.

Having used your Pulmonary Syrup individu

affords me great pleasUre to inform you, that 1 have
in every instance found it highly efficacious in cur
ing Coughs, Colds, &c. Indeed lam so well satis

cases, that I keep at all times three or four bottles
on hand. W. B. JOHNSTON."
Rev. William Heilig, of Abbottsville, Pa., writes

Dr. William Steelling—l take great pleasure in
informing you that I have been much benefitted by
the use of your Pulmonary Syrup; my throat which
has been sore for better than two years, has been
greatly improved ; I think by using a few more bot

WILLIAM HEILIG.
Rev. 0. Douglass, Pastor of the Mariners Church,
Philadelphia, writes thus:
I feel much gratified in being able to say to you
that the Pulmonary Syrup you sent, has been used
by several persons with great success. I can truly
say that almost every one who has taken it has
been more or less benefitted. 1 cordially recom

DEERFIELD, January 25th, 1845.
Dr. Steelling—Dear Sir :—There are some things
that impress us very favorably at first, but further'
acquaintance convinces us that our impressions
were too exalted. There are other things of which
we think more highly as our acquaintance becomes
more intimate. In this class I rank your Pulmonary
Syrup, and Vegetable Anti-Bilious Pills; which
have been kind friends to me and which I take
great pleasure in introducing to the acquaintance
of others. Yours very respectfully,

OLD: DR. JACOB TOWNSEND,
THE ORIGINAL DISCOVERER OF THE
Genuine Townsend Sarsaparilla.
OLD DR. TOWNSEND is now about 70 years of
age, and has long been known as- the author
and discoverer of the Genuine - Original Townsend
Sarsaparilla. ' Being' poor, he was compelled to
limit its manufacture, b)• which means it has been
kept out of market, and the sales circumscribed to
those only who had proved its worth, and known
its value. It had reached the ear; of many, never
theless, as those persons who had .been healed of
sore diseases, and saved from death, proclaimed
its excellence and wonderful HEALING POWER.
Knowing, many years ago, that he hail, by his
skill, science and experience, devised an article
which would be or incalculable advantage to man
kind when the means would be tbrnished to bring
it into universal notice, when its inestimable virtues
would lie known and appreciated. This time has
come, the means are supplied ; this Grand and
Unequalled Preparation is manutlictured on the lar-
gest scale, and is called for throughout the length
and breadth of the land, especially as it is found
ncapable of degeneration or deterioration.'
.Unlike young S. P. Townsend's, it improves with
ge, and never changes, but ror the better; because
it ia prepared on scientific principlesly a scientific
man. The highest knoVvledge or Chemistry, and
the latest discoveries of the art, have all been
•
brought into requisition in'the manullicture or the
old Dr's Sarsaparilla. The Sarsaparilla Root, is
well known to medical men contains many medical
properties and some' properties which are inert or
useless, and others which if retained in preparing
it fdr use, produce fermentation and acid, •tvllieli is
injurious to the system. Sonic of the properties 'of
Sarsaparilla are so volatile, that they entirely evap
orate and are lost in the preparation, if tliey are not
preserved by a scientific progress, known only to
those experienced in its manufacture. Moreover,
these volatile principles, which fly off in vapor, or
as an exhalation, under heat, are the very essential
medical properties of the root, which give to it all
its value.
Any person cfn boil or-stew the root till they get
a dark colored liquid, which is more from the col
oring matter in the root than from anything dine;
they can then strain this insipid or vapid liquid,
sweeten with Rohr molasses; and then call it's Sar
saparilla Extract or Syrup.•' But such-is not the
article known as the
GENUINE OLD DR. JACOB TOWNSEND'S
SARSAPARILLA.
This is so prepared, that all the inert properties
of the Sarsaparilla root are first removed, every
thing capable of becofning acid or of fermentation,
is' extracted or rejected; then every particle of
medical virtue is secured in a pure and concentra
ted form; and thus it is rendered incapable of los
ing any of its valuable and healing properties. Pre
pared in this way, it is made the most powerful
agent in the
CURE OP I NNU M ERABLK-DISEASES.
Hence the reason why we hear commendations
on every side in its favor by- men, women, and
children. • We find it doing wonders in the cure of
Consumption, Dyspepsia, and Liver Complaint, and
in RheumatiSin, Scrofula, Piles, Costiveness, all
Cutaneous Eruptions, pimples, Blotches, and all
affections arising from
IMPURITY OF THE BLOOD
It possesses a marvelous efficacy in all complaints
arising from Indigestion, from Acidity of the Stom
ach, from unequal circulation, determination of
blood to the head, palpitation of the heart, cold
feet and hands, cold chills and hot flashes over the
body. It has not its equal in Colds and Coughs ;
and promotes easy expectoration and gentle perspi-.
ration, relaxing strictures of the lungs, throat, and
every other part. But in nothing is ifs excellence
more manifestly seen and acknowledged than in
all kinds and stages of
FEMALE COMPLAINTS
It works wonders in cases of Flour Albus or
Whites, Falling of the Womb, Obstructed, Suppres
sed, or Painful Menses, Irregularity of the mens
trual periods, and the like-, and it is effectual in
curing all the forms of Kidney Disease.
By removing obstructions, and regulating the
general system, it gives tone and strength to the
whole body, and thus cures all forms of Nervous
Diseases and Debility, and thus prevents or relieves
a great variety of other maladies, as Spinal Irrita
tion, Neuralgia, St. Vitus' Dance, Swooning, Ep
ileptic Fits, Convulsions, &c.
It cleanses the blood, excites the liver to healthy
action, tones the Stomach, and gives good diges
tion, relieves the bowels of torpor and 'constipation,
allays inflammation, purifies the skin, equalizes the
circulation of the blood, producing gentle warmth
equally over all parts of the body, and the insensi
ble perspiration ; relaxes all strictures and tight
ness, removes all obstructions, and invigorates the
entire nervous system. Is tint this than the medi
cine you pre-eminently need /

Souring, Fermenting, Arid Compound qf. S. P.
Townsend,
and yet he would fain have it understood that Old
Dr. Jacob Townsend's Genuine. Original Sarsapa
rilla, is an imitation of his inferior preparation.
Heaven forbid that we should. deal in an article
which would bear the least resemblance to S. P.
Townsend's article; and which should bring down
upon the old Dr. such a mountain load of complaint
and criminations from Agents who hhve sold, and
purchasers who have used S. P. Townsend's Fer
menting Compound.
We wish it under Stood because it is the absolute
truth, that S. P. Townsend's article and old fr.
Jacob Townsend's Sarsaparilla are heaven-wide
apart, and infinitely dissimilar; that they are unlike
in every particular having not one single thing in
common.
As S. P. Townsend i. 4 no doctor, and never was,
is no chemist, no pharmaceutist—knows no more
of medicine or disease than any other common,
unscientific, unprofessional man, what guarantee
, can the public have that they are receiving a genu
ine scientific medicine, containing all the virtues
of the articles used in preparing it, and which are
incapable of changes which might render them the
AGENTS of Disease instead or health.
But what else should be expected from one who
knows nothing comparatively of medicine or dis
ease ! It requires a person of some experience to
cook and serve up even a common decent med.
How much more important is it that the persons
who manufacture medicines designed for
Weak Stomachs and Enfeebled Systems
should know well thc- medical properties of plants,
the best manner or securing and concentrating their
healing virtues, also an extensive system, and how
to adapt remedies to these diseases!
It is horrible to think and to know how cruelly
the afflicted are imposed upon by presumptuous men
for the sake of money ! Fortunes made out of the
agonies of the sick ! and no equivalent rendered
the despairing sufferers! For sale by
