THANKSGIVING DAY
PENNSYL VANIA, SS.
In the name and by the authority of the Com
monwealth of Pennsykavia,
BY WILLIAM K. JOHNSTON,
Governor of the said Commonweath.
A PROCLAMATION.
The performances of duties we
owe to the Supreme Dipenser ol e
vents, is a. task no less pleasing tiian
imperative; to HIM. by whose eu
during mercy we live, on whom we
lean for support, whosejtrm is our
defence, and whose peculiar regard is our glop-,
who in adversity consoles, in weakness sustains
us; and from whom we receive every good and
perfect gift, we owe, especially, our admiration
and thanks. This obligation is equally peremp
tory to nations and to individuals. No orgam
zation of men, no condition ot society no form
of Government can releases people irom their
dutießtoGOD; nor should the seductions ot pow
er, the lust of ambition, or the splendor ol re
nown render them forgetful of the' Saereii privi
lege, of addressing to theTHRONE OF GRACE
AND MERCY the language ol thanksgiving and
praise. . . ,
These truths apply to us as a nation with espe
cial force. With political institutions wisely a
ilapted to our welfare and happiuess, a country
abounding with resources for individual prosper
ity, and national independence,—a climate dis- I
pensing health and vigor, and a land yielding to
the hand of toil a fruitful abundance, under the
ern-cious superintendence of a righteous 1 rovi
deuce we have arisen in half a century from the
condition of an infant and depeudent nation, and
have become a great and powerful people. In
the necessary, yet dangerous struggle to enlarge
ouriproportiomf, to develope our resources and
defend our rights, in the couSlcts resulting from
loreboi aud Somestic intercourse, ufluenced by
opposing interests and national jealousies m the
balancing of powers belonging to the ddh-m t
branches of the national government, aui set
tling the boundaries between reserved and con
lerred authority; our institutions have been
preserved, our national character vindicated, and
our liberties secured and perpetuated. To HIM,
whose “band is not shortened, that it cannot
save, neither his oar heavy, that it cannot hear,
all pruise, ull glory is due.
The present condition of our country should
awaken our most profound gratitude. The warm
which we were recently engaged lias terminated,
and our citizen soldiers have returneiLto their
homes crowned with imperishable houdjs. e
" mourn, indeed, the loss of many brave meu, wbo
fell in battle or by pestilence; but we have the
consolation to kuow that they offured up tlieir
lives in the service of their country. Then
deeds \riU be remembered, aud their memories
cherished by their admiring countrymen. The
• arts of peace have succedeed the clangor of war,
and the spectacle is presented of twenty millions
of people, reposing under the shadow of free in
stitutions, alarmed by no dangers without, agita
ted by no convulsions within their bordesr.
When we compare our favored country with
the condition of unhappy Europe, the mmd is
furnished with lessons of wisdom, and the heart
instructed in humility and reverence. 1 here, a
down trodden and long endunug people have a
wakened from the apathy oi bondage, and are
teaching their oppressors the “ill husbandry ot
injustice.” It is a lessou which must bo written
in blood. Hence we behold crowns trampled
under foot, thrones overturned, aud empires
wrested from their possessions; hence wo see
the desolation of kingdoms, tho" destitution of
furnishing nations, and hear the lamentations of
suffering humanity. A Righteous, a Just God,
in the exercise of omnipotent power, has pre
served us from these awful calamities. We are

neither the murmurs of discontent, nor the voice
of mourning, nor the cries of want are heard, fcr
“our ways arc ways of pleasantness, and all our
paths are peace.”
In the midst of these unnumbered blessings
is it not our duty, will it not be our pleasure to'
return to HIM, from whom they flow, the hom
age of our udoration, and the acknowledgement
of our gratitude ! To HIS mercy, in our unwor
thineas, are we indebted for the tnuniHcenec ot
HIS favor; to HIS gracious and loving kindness
must be attributed the continuance of our nation
al prosperity.
Entertaining these sentiments, and deeply sen
sible of the necessity of Divine aid, to guide and
guard us in the path of duty, I do hereby appoint
Thursday, the 22d day of November next,
As a duy of thanksgiving to Almighty God, and |
dty earnestly recommend to the people ot the
State of Pennsylvania, that it be set apart, by all
denominations of Christians within this Com
monwealth, as a day devoted to THANKSGIV
ING, PRAYER and PRAISE, and that they
stain on that day, as far as practable, from world
ly employments, assemble at their respective
places of public worship, acknowledge their
transgression, supplicate through the merits of
the Redeemer the forgiveness of sins, and with
contrite hearts render HIS holy name homage of
adoration, thanksgiving and praise.
Given under my baud and the Great Seal of the
State, at Harrisburg, this twenty-eighth day of
September, in the year of our Lord one, thous
and eightliundred and forty-eight, and of the
Commonwealth the seventy-third.
