9(urder of a Philadelphian. Sax Angels, April 7 th, 1848. ' ) Located 9 miles from the city of Mexico. $ • On the 3d of. this month, at this place, Isaiah Bender, a resident of Kensington,.Philadelphia, was wilfully murdered by a member of the.S. Carolina Regiment, by the name of Stanford. The deceased was also a member of the same regiment. He was beloved by all who knew him ; his remains were escorted to his resting place by five regiments of volunteers. The deceased has been in every battle in this valley, even to the taking,of the city of Mexico. He has been most faithful to the flag of his country. The hospitals containing the sick ui Col. Wyn koop's division of volunteers are to be removed to Jalapa. some 90 miles off Vera Cruz. They are to leave with the train on the Sth of this month. No news from Queretaro of importance. AYe are looking anxiously for the speedy ratification of thb treaty by the Mexican Congress. The rainy season has set in at this place. The Pennsylvania Regiment expect to be dis banded very soon. The men are all in very good health and fine spirits. Explosion—Contl.iojution and Loss of Life. —One of those terrible catastrophic** which some times occur, frequently through .carelessness, and often from causes impossible to control, took place yesterday morning about 1u o'clock. The whole neighborhood of- Fifth and .Market Streets was shocked at that hour with an explosion that sound ed not unlike an earthquake. Instantaneous with the explosion we saw—for we happened to be pres ent—the bricks and other, materials of the house occupied by the pyrotechnist, (Timlin* f\ Williams, on the southeast corner of' the alley running from Vine to Lodge street, and between Fifth ai d 'Sixth street, thrown in every direction, and the whole interior and roof of the building enveloped in (lames. Ihe workmen ol My. Williams were, engaged in manufacturing lire works to be used on the goth of next month lor the benefit of the Mechanic Institute, and the probability is that some of the combustible material became ignited during the progress of the work, in a manner, no doubt, per fectly imaiToutitabie. A raster ol .Mrs. Williams lor herself down from a second story window, and escaped with some'slights hurts only. Capt. R. _M. .Moore was hurt by a brick striking him on the arm. It was providential that so few were injured when so many were in the building, and 'hundreds were passing backwards and forwards.— Cii":iiinuti En quirer, dprll 29. Fit an k ness. —Re frank with the world. Frank ness is the child of honesty and courage. Say just what you mean to do on every occasion: and take it for granted you mean to do what is right. It a friend asks a favor, you should grant it. if it is rea sonable; i( not. tell him plainly why you cannot. You will wrong him and wrong yourself by equiv ocation of any* kind. Never do a wrong thing to make a friend nor to. keep one; the man who re quires you to do so. is dearly purchased at a sacri fice. Deal kindly but firmly with all men; you will find it the policy which wears best. Above all, do not appear to you are not. If you have-any fault to find with any one, tell him; not others, of what you complain. -There is no more dangerous experiment than that of undertak ing to be one thing to a man s face and another behind his back. Wc should live, act, and speak out of doors, as the phrase is, and say and do what we are willing should be known and read by men. It is not only best as a matter of principle, but as a matter of policy-.' Dwindling.—One of the most extensive swind ling games that we have lately heard of. is that reported in the New Orleans Daily Crescent, as having been practised upon Mr. J M. Caballero, an extensive segar importer, on Front Levee street.' near the Custom House. At the last drawing of the Grand Lottery at Ht&vana. Mr. Caballero had occasion to notice the numbers of tickets drawing prizes, and a few days after the lottery \va? drawn, was called upon by a man having a g'ticket, which had drawn a corresponding portion of a Sgfi.uiii'i prize. The gentleman iu Mt. C. that he was much iu want ~f money at that p.'utioulai time, induced him to advance nearly the amount winch the ticket, by 1 1 j** regular list ol prizes, pur ported to hu\e drawn. Mr. Caballvi'n advanced about SSUW on the ticket, anil sent it on to Ha vana. It was in due coiir>e of time returned To him. with the iiilunuatioti that it was a Joinery, and that the prize had been paid on the genuine ticker. GORMELY, in the CLOTHING BUSINESS, excites the surprise of some and the envv and jealousy of others His unparalleled success some attribute to one cause, and some to another. And some, more envious than the rest, attribute it to any cause that best suits their purposes, no matter how unjust, or how foul the misrepresentations. Again, there is another class more easily satisfied, and content 1 themselves by sayitrg—“ Well, it is all luck—bettor, to be born lucky than rich. Born under a lucky planet,” &c, “ Pshaw says Dr. Franklin, of luck, all the luck I know of is in proper management.” Precisely so, Dr., and iust the operating cause in the extensive business done at the great LANCAS TER HALL QF FASHIONS. The only secret in this large business, and the onlv reason that it is large, is because he is careful in the selection of good materials, and has all his goods well made — and then the fitoi his garments cannot be surpassed; and are sold at prices that defy competition.
