strengthening tlie hands of the advo
cates of this most necessary reform. It
was also by a netice of motion the ether
day that Mrs. Besnnt nnd Mr. Stewart
Hcadlam tried te ro-raise the whole
question of religions instruction by mov
ing that Bible reading should be discon
tinued in all our schools, n motion which,
being considered nt the present moment
inoppertuno, did net find a single sup
porter en the beard.
Pnrtles nre very fairly divided en
the present school Ixiard, which adds a
great zest te the divisions There are
nbeut twenty Clericals efHpgldtes, as
they arc frequently tci-HWi, and an
equal number of Progressives or Itndl
cals, but between the two thcre stand
nbeut a dozen wi called Moderates, who,
en the whole, mere frequently vete with
the former than with the latter party.
Mr. Diggle combines in his person func
tions analogous te theso of speaker of
the Iioube of commons, a leader of the
government. He acts both as chairman
of the beard nnd as; leader of the Cleri
cal, a combination which inevitably
from time te tiine produces uufortunate
results. As n chatrinnu "pur et simple,"
Mr, Diggle is admirable, with nn im im
'mense knewledge of busincsi nnd n con
siderable senf.0 of equity, but when par
ty considerations happen te inlervene
his judicial impartiality is apt te fail
him. On our side for I fancy I need
hardly inform my American friends that
my placeis among the I'regrebslsts the

Members possessed of Socialistic lean
ings. We four lady members of the school
lwird form n veiy harmonious little
quartet in spite of the various differ
ences of opinion that naturally exist be
tween us. Our wnier member, Mils
Davenport Hill, has for many ycara ox ex
tended her special protection ever the
distinctively feminine branches of edu
cation, such ns sewing, cooking and
laundry work. Her influence has cer
tainly been nuut betielicinl in thle de
partments, our methods of teaching sow sew
ing te large daises being no succchsful
that we have been fiequenlly .applied te
for ndvice en the subject fiem both
Aniuiicn and Australia. Mrs. Maltlaud,
who has had much local exjicriciicu of
schoeli in her own division of Maryle Marylo Maryle
bene, devetes her cnergicu mainly te
hchoel management and the (election of
teachers, while Mrs. Annle Ikaiit dili
gently pushes forward all the labor ques
tions nnd does her best te iufiihe the
proceedings of the beard with a Seclalibt
spirit. It is mainly owing te her exer
tions that the liemd new declines te give
contracts for schools te nny employer
who does net pay the trades union into
of wages, a change which was net effect
ed without a fieice struggle. Khe is also
an ardent supporter of flee schools and
free meals.
As for myself, 1 have pe far abstained,
intentionally, from taking up any special
line of action as a woman. It seems te
me far inore important that women
should le.ttn te take their full and equal
shnre of intellectual work side by side
with men than that they should erect
themselves into a body with beparate
and jKi&ibly antagonistic claims mid in
teiests. This in no way afreets my very
firm la-licf in the iuimeube advantages te
be gained by the probenee of women en
the beard. In the ordinary loutine of
business there arise numerous little
points lesjiecting either the instruction
of the girls or the comfort and well lie
ing of mistresses and pupil teachers
which it is obviously n woman's province
te decide. Te tin?, personally, the whele
work is full of a never failing interest;
it is thoroughly practical in the best
sense, and in working for the welfare of
the rislug generation we have a satisfac
tory conviction that we are at least be
ginning at the right end.
