A THRILLING RAILROAD RtDE.
Rushing DeWn m Meuntala Sid With
the) speed at the Wind.
A Denver dispatch says Southern Paclfle
officials have suppressed until new one of
the most thrilling accidents that ever hap
pened en their Una A passenger train or
ten coaches, or which three were Fullman
kleepen, slowly climbed the mountains tn
Tehachapl pass, "pusher" being used.
When the summit is reached there la a
aharp descent, the grade at eeme points
dropping off 200 feet te the ralle. It Is cus
tomary before starting en this downward
journey te give the nlrbrakea thoieugh
testing, but It would apjear that this was
net done. The engineer permitted the
train te attain a high rate or speed before
applying tbe brake, lie found they would
net work. The speed of the train was me
mentarlly Inore.tiing. It shot along precl-
ftices where there was a sheer decline or
heusands or feet en ena side and a vall or
rock en the ether.
It rattled uver bridges spanning deep
gorges, and whizzed around curves where
eimlne and renr sleeper almost met across
the chasm. Day was Just breaking. Most
or the passengers were sleeping. A few,
howevor, wero awakened by the terrillc
breakneck speed or the train, and were
terror-stricken. In one or the Pullman
sleepers a woman struggled with the con
ductor in au effort te threw hcrsulfover hcrsulfever hcrsulfover
beard. The engineer reversed and vainly
tried te step the moinentum. He whlstled
again and again, and aroused a sleepy
brakeman, who threw bis strength upon
one or the hand brakes. It snapped like a
straw, and It was afterwards round that the
wheels had lern the brakes te pieces as
seen as they touched It. Finally the train
shot into a portion or the read where tbere
wus a lorel space te the left, while te the
right was" a descent of 1,200 feet. At this
place it jumped tbe track, fortunately en
the left side. Strange te say. although the
train must huve been running fully
seventyftve mlles an hour, net one person
was killed, though the ceaches were badly
wrecked. One woman was seriously, but
nut fatally, hurt.
I'epper en Strawberries.
"Pepper en your strawlierrles?" said a
dusky waiter at Doeuer's hotel, in Phila
delphia, yesterday.
" What 1" exclaimed the astonished
guest, trying te think what day it was, lest
there might be seme reason for playing a
jeke en him. " Ne, thank you. What de
you mean by that?"
" Well, boss," said the otlier, " all gon gen gon
tleinen new takes pepper en strawberries
Just try oue."
The guest did ns directed and te his sur
prise found It delightful and seen sprinkled
the whole- snucer with the condiment.
" De I new call ler salt, mustard and
vinegar?" said the guest," " I want te be
up te the times."
" Ne, sail, take 'em jistthat way, you'll
find 'em elegant."
Tbe guest investigated and seen round that
n gentleman from llie Orange Free State
in Seuth Africa, wus stepping at the hotel
recently and insUted en treating his ber
ries with peppor. This set the fashion
which is rapidly coming into favor.
