Newspaper Itrading.
The wild career of Kugcne Cowles, ns
detailed In the news columns, is packed
full of morals for these who enjoy find
ing them ; but, unfortunately, the great
majority of paper reading mankind care
only for the Interest and surprise of the
dally news, and give very llttle time te
thought ou the ways of the world and
the teachings of ether peoples' experi
ence. Newspapers should make people
s great deal better by recording daily
tbe experiences of ethers who have come
t3 grief or geed fortune. lixjerleuce is
tbe greatest, if tbe sternest, of school
masters, and the press should huve
marked effect In bringing vividly befeie
readers the daily teachings of experience
in thousands of cates. In spite of much
narrow, and some Just, criticism of
' newspaper English," It cannot be de
aled that events of the day are often
presented with a graphic skill uud force
that command sympathetic attention,
and the reader should learn almost us
much from se following tbe experience of
ethers as he would learn If he were tak
ing the bitter lewteu in pereeu, with nil
its misery of mind or hxly, or its solemn
. deem. This should be the effect of
tbe better class of papers If properly rad,
but thousands read without reflection
wMfwlth them reading is nothing but a
victews habit. They arc often people
wu&weuld be greatly scandalized by the
' fcaffsstlea that tliey-dellghted in senu-

Xtwwgu fact of real life, they eklm ever
i th r coerds, from a horror te a festival,
from a hanging te the wedding of soine
heiress, or tbe financial wreck of an
honored Ann, and the effect of It all Is

newspaper that leads many thoughtful
observers te question whether It is a

A citizen of Hanover, Mr. Henry Wirt,

Frem Mentana te New Mexien thore are
reports of suffering for want of rain, for
while the East has been no thoroughly
soaked for a year or inore thore has been a
very light rainfall in parts of the West
lying along the caatern alope of the Iteeky

sick In Louden and cabled for his wife,
who went nver aud fergave him and took
oare of hhn, but when he get well
he resutned his old manner of llfe,
traveling in California and tlien In the East.
He again professed renoutenfce aud was

Immediately for New Yerk. A telegram
fell out of his pocket, which his wife picked
up and read. It was from the Llenenschaid
woman, and was te the effect that n lutler of
his had been received, aud asking where
aud when who could communleate with him.
Mrs. Cowles did net sjeak of thisdlscovery,
but managed te persuade him net te go te
New Yerk. On the next day Cowles
started, aud was shadewed by a detective,
who reported te Mi Cew les. The Injured
wlfe at ence placed the facts In possession
of her husband's father. The old man, al
most broken-hearted, wrete te Mrs. Cowles
that under all luwsef heavenand eatthshe
was absolved from nlloglanee te her hus
band, and concluded as follews: "Don't
stay with hhn any longer. Cenie te me
and 1 will take care of you." Old Mr.
Cew les never roeevcred from the shock,
and he dled a few weeks later. The estate,
which would liave fallen te Ettgoue, was
divided In two parts, ene being left te the
wife aud child aud the ether te the seu for
use during his lifotltue, but te go te the
wife and daughter after his death.
Eugene Cewles made overy effort te
break the will but failed. On last Monday
he ssnt word te his wife that he Intended
te leave the country, give up the fight, and
would probably never return, and as a last
favor be asked for an iutertlew with his
child. The mother, after much entreaty,
contented and her sister went te the station
with the llltle girl. As seen as the
train begau te meve Cowles seized the
child aud threatening te sheet anyene
who Interfered with him, Jumped en the
train with her. The aherlll' was at
once started en a long chate after hhn, but
he escaped te Caueda aud announced that
he would only surrender the child en con
dition that his wlfe would glve up half of
the ostate. Mrs. Cowles, her brether C. C.
Halls, Cewles' slsterand Judge J.K. Ingor Inger Ingor
neil weut te Canada te socure an Interview
aud found Cowles at Montreal. He In
insisted en an Interview with his i(e
alone and finally Ihcy had a very stormy
ene, during which he agalu ikreatoned te
sheet whoever Interfered with him.
At last Cewles censented te allow his
wife te sne tbe child. 8he insisted en being
accompanied by her brether and sistur-ln-law.
A cab was taken aud for the minutes
thev drove along St. Catharine street.
When near the convent Cowles reached
out and stepped the cab, and, turning te
ills wife, said : " Yeu are new within sight
of whero Florrle is; agrce immediately te
give up hair the estate or I will kill you."
At this moment he drew his pistol and
pointed It at his wife's head. He had net
calculated ou anybody olse being armed in
the carriage, l.lke a Hash anether pistol
was drawn. Thore was a report, a pull of
smoke and a ball from Hall's rovelvor had
passed through Cowles' threat. The streets
were crowded with people coming from
church at tlie time. The wounded man fell
still clutching his revolver in his hand,
and the ex cited mob thought he had com

the hospital and may recover. The child is
