A lively 14-year-old lal nameil Jenes, of

his home, near tlie fjlietuckel river, Is a

feet fittuer te the bottom.
The boy catiKlit the well rope, broke I',
and boy and repe went te the bottom in an
Instant. Then he mme te the surface, and,
being an expert Hwlmmcr, easily kept
himself afloat. He called for help, but
evldently his voice barely seared te the
surface of the earth. He swam around the
Hides of his perpendicular prison a few
times, and the doiperate nature of his con

If he kepi en swimming, he reasoned, he
Would seen be exhausted, and sink.
He he managed te llx his head and shoul
ders against one slde of the well and his
root against the oppeslto ene, and In that
position rested for several moments. .He
Razed upward. The tall shaft narrowed
like a tunnel above, and at the top vt as
capped by n round segment of blue sky,
which seemed Immensely far awv. The
boy decided te make the effort te ctlmb te
the top of the well. The well tlie is very
Wide, but the boy was barefoot, and his
muscular tees and lingers stuck te the
curb like the foelers of a leech. He began
te crawl upward. Up he went slew! v and
without a slip, until he was within a feet
or two of the shaft, and then suddenly his
clutch slipped, and a second time he shot
down tlie wall, going te tlie bottom.
He came te the Hiirfiice of the water
quickly, and after u moment's rest again
began his tollsemo upward climb; and
again, when within n feet of its top, he lest
Ilia held and plunged agiiu te its bottom. A
third tlme he ess-iyed the feat, and that
time was successful. He pulled himself
out of tlie shall, stepped ever the well curb,
unci fell breathless and exhausted en the
ground. The llesh had been stripped from
his lingers by the cutting grain of the
drain tile, and his linger nails wero worn
te the quicks.
