The sheeting of Helshay, the train

drawing a murderous looking knlfu

A FIGHT FOB LIFE.

It was a fight for life. The combatants
were Mrs. Mary Petersen and a madman,
who glves ttis name of Albert Jenssen, and

day's work, Mrs. Petersen sat by the
kitchen fire te await the coming of her
husband. The evening meal was en the
tabic She had waited, perhaps, half an
hour, when the front (deer epened. Sup
posing it te be her husband, she get up te
Sreet him. Ilefore she reached the hall
oer It was thrown violently open, and a
strange man, with a wlld, florceglaro in his
'eyes, confronted her.
Fer a inoment the two steed facing each
ether, the woman almost paralyzed with
fear and the madman gloating ever his In
tended victim with glittering eyes. Then
he drew a revelver, and, levelling it at her
head, flred. She sprang te one side, and
then. with a bound like a tiger, clutched
him by the threat. It was a fight for life,
and even the madman, with his awful
strength, could net loeso her grip. In
vsln did he strlke her with his ro re ro
velvor. He tried te bring the muzzle In
line with her head, that he might blew her
brains out, but she hugged him no closely
that he could net, and the weaen was
again discharged Inte the wall Shecllnched
her hands the tighter. His eyes Mgan te
start from their noekets. His facn changed
from red te a livid purple, and his tengue
rolled out as he gasped for breath. The
veins of his forehond swolied almost te
bursting, but the woman held en. llorlife
depended en her pi I p. .
Back and forth across the room they
struggled. Chairs wero overturned and
the table set 'for supper was upset. Tbe
madman had ceased te strlke her, and all
his efforts wero te break her grasp en his
threat. He began te weaken. At last the
bleed spurted from his nostrils, and the
sight of this was mero than the peer woman
could stand. She relaxed her held and
fled, fro m the house te the nearest neigh

as he was froe irem Mrs. Pettorsen'sgrnsp
the mad man slunk te the attic of the heuse.
In a short tlme the Hlnman stroet patrol
wagon arrlved, nnd Oflleer Birmingham
went up te the top of the heuse te fetch the
maniac down. It was no easy matter. The
fiend had pirtinlly recovered his strength
from the frightful choking nnd was at bay
in a dark comer of the attic. Fertunately,
in the struggle the fallow had diepped his
rovelvor. As sein as the officer entered
the dimly lighted room the maniac made a
rush for him. Then enme another fight,
but the ofticer was fresh and the madinnu
badly winded from the struggle he had
with Mm. Petersen In the kltchen.
As he closed In On the officer the manlae
gaven hearse yell, thnt sounded mero like
n rear of a wild beast than ilke a human
cry. The oflleer finally threw the fellow,
nnd he was manacled nnd taken te the
Hlnman stroet pollce station, llore he be be bo
came mero qulet. Nothing could be
lenrned from him, however, further than
his name was Albert Jenssen, and that he
escaped from a, Michigan Insane asylum.
After closely exnmlnlng him he was taken

New seething night time darkles en the peel,
The white star sparkles In the peaceful sky,
The fanner makes a bee line for his couch,
And hears the feline warble en the fence.
Tlie flutist new begarbles Nancy Loe.
The small boy's marbles rest with nil his tops.
While Artemis se queenly lightly float,
Above the world serenely In her ceurse.
While moonlit weeds are stretching fur away,
A silver etching for the poet's eye,
The gentle night wind rustles In the corn,
The agile acgre h miles for your hens.
The (lowers beaming with the pearls of night,
The fanner's dreaming of the waving crops,
While of the geed pile he'll rake In next fall
