13. I860. Dr. Levering was called away
from home by a decoy messsge te treat a
patient some miles-distant, lie returned
te his home some time after 7 o'clock in
the evening, and drove dlrrctly te the
btrn. There was a tone wall
about ten feet from the stable deer.
Back of this wall Hondersen secreted
himself and walled until Levering had
unhitched bis horse and was leading It In
the stable. Aa the doctor get opposite te
falm he fired a charge or uuekshet and
bullets Inte bis breast. He dropped te the
ground dead, and a few mtnutee later Ills
family found his lifeless body.
The assassin escaped in the darkness, and
se completely covered his tracks that no
due te the murder has ever been found
until Hendersen revealed it himself.
The country was Immediately aroused;
and searching parties were set afoot. Hen Hon
dereon wss among the number.and evinced
the keenest Interest te unravel the mystery.
His name appeared along with that of a
number of ether prominent cltlrens of
Lewer Merlen, offering a reward of 1 1,000.,
Immedlately after the murder Jehn Hen Hen
dereon took sick, and for five years after
ward was art Invalid through the panft of
remerse It Is said new and was compelled
te retlre from business. He moved te Phil
adelphia, whew he remained for eevernl
years; but like Kugene Asram, returned
te the scene of his crime, which seemed te
have a strange Infatuation for htm.

rled in England, and has been a sharer In

A Uese Test.
Seme time age the fire committee of
councils purchased 1,000 feet of Eureka
hose and same quantity of New Yerk Fabric
hese. Wheu the test was made the Fabrie
hose fulled te stand it and the Eureka did.
The Fabrie was sent back aud 1,003 addi
tional feet of Eureka hese was ordered.
This afternoon a test of the hese
was inade In Ne. 1 englue heuse. Theso
present were the members of the tire
committee, Chief Englncer Yonder
smith, Samuel 11. Sheuck, of Harris
burg, agent of the Eureka company,
aud & number of firemen. The hese
was tested with a hydraulic pump and
several soctlens were submitted te 400
pounds, which it steed bravely. That Is
what the hese is guaranteed te stand, and a
number of soctlens were tried at 2.'0
pounds, which is the sorvlee test. The
hose wai perfectly satisfactory te every
eue.

Lewer End of Esqutre Jehn C. Lewls, a
well known aud eccentrle bacheler who
had for many years led a solitary
life. He was net known at the time

morning, however, it develops that Lewis

ministration. Mr. Keen his been notified,
