The market cemmlltee reported the
markets In geed order. The transient rent
for last month was J93.05, and for the year
1,303.35.
Jehn A. Gilbert, ux -constable, through
the chief burgess, presented a claim for the
reward of tlOO offered by council for the
arrest and conviction of persons concerned
in the labor riots. The matter was re
ferred te the finance commlttee te consult
with the solicitor and repert.
The matter of the crossing at Slxlh and
Chestnut strcets was referred te the high
way committee.
The flre cemanics were granted their
usual quarterly appropriation of f 150 each.
Council will meet en Friday evening,

The Concert.
The College Olee and Mandelin clubs
sang a very successful concert here last
night te an uudlence or five hundred peo
ple. The first part or the pregramme evi
dently gave great satisfaction te the people,
though their manifestations at approval
were decldedly cold In comparison with
the applause this part has wen from audi
ences in ether places. The F. A M. boys
determined te wake up their auditors and
they entered upon the second half with
vim and Jollity that were simply irresisti
ble. The result was that three and four
encores were demanded of nearly cvery
number.
After the concert a very pleasant rccop rccep rccop
tlen was given the boys at the home of
Dr. Alex. Craig, whose son is a member of
the Glee club. After the reception the
boys complimented Miss Sereuua North
with a ild night Bcrenade. The great auc
cess of the concert Is due te ltev. J. II.

Isaac M. Bryson, brakeman en the V. It.
B., was sitting In a cabin yesterday after
noon, and when he Jumped etf he was
.truck by a passing car. He was knecked
down and severely bruised.

of the V. It. It., struck his right hand
against a car in Jumping en a train at
North Bend yesterday afternoon. Ilia

from work.

Interesting lecture in cellege chapel last
night, te a large and appreciative audience
His subject was "Syria and the Nile l"x po pe po
dltien." Being a native of Mt. Lebanon,
his description of- the customs, manners,
religions and laws of the peeple of Syria Is
invested with entcrtululug l.tcts. Alse,
having been an interpreter In the UnglNh
army sent in lbSl te the relief of General
Gorden, his acceuut of its movements and
plans of campaigns Is especially instruc
tive. The cellege peeple were pleased te
meet Mr. MukadUlm nud te hear him ad
dress them.
Vex Cbase at Uaorsetowu.
There was a flue fox chase from UreiPit
hotel, in the Ullage of .Georgetown, lUrt
township, en Tuesday afternoon. The
crowd present was very great and there
was a number of Lancaster hunters down.
After the usual fine dinner the fox was
dropped at half past.feur o'clock. He ran hi
a southwesterly direction and had net been
captured when the Lancaster people left.
About 75 dogs were In the pack that chased
hire. Among the huntera present wero
Jeseph Roop, Milten Heep, IlrUbin Skllcs,
Henry Skiles, Jehn Myers and ethers.
Mortality Among Uaukers.
Mr. Ocorge K. Reed is authority for the
statement that forty-one bankers havedled
in Lancaster since 1850. This averages ene
year. There are seven national and two
private banks and the fatality does net
seem te discourage the business.

Till week the congregation of St, rani's
church, at Orange and Duke streets, are
celebrating their fortieth anniversary, and
last evening the exercises began in the
church and they will be continued each
evening during the entire week.
In the year ISM) about elghty-flve in tim
bers of the old German ltefermcd church,
which steed where the First Reformed
church is at present, split away from
It and started the new church. The first
minister was Bev. N. A. Keycs. The
cause of the split was the Germen Ian Ian
iruaireenlv wassDeken in the old church,
which was organized In 1730. The youth
of the church allowed a dottre te have an
excluslve English service, and that caused
the difference which led te the new con
gregation. The uiomber who wlthdrew from the old
congregation were erganised under an
English church February 17, 1830, and the
following officers were elocted: Elders.
Daniel II. Hellshtie, Abraham ue,a ana
Christian Gast ; deacons, Geerge Shrelner,
Charles M. Erben, Henry Mettger,
Qeorge Gundaker, Jr., Jeseph Wol Wel
chsna, and David; King: trustees, Po Pe
ter Leng, Fhlllp K. Breneman and David
Lenguecker. These persons were Installed
en the same day, and ltev. N.A.Keyes was
ohesen the first paiter. The new congre
gation went te work vigorously, and the
old Franklin cellege was secured as a tem
porary place or worship. The let at the cor
ner or Duke and Orange street was finally
purchased for f.1,100 and Jeshua) W. Jack
was glven the contract te erect the building.
The corner stene was laid en Monday
September 10, 1850, In the prcsence of a
large audlonce and the church was com
pleted ene year later. On Nevember 6,
1851,thename"St. Faul's Reformed church
of Lancaster" was adopted. In 1855 ltev.
Keyes resigned nud for six months tin
congregation was served by supplier, Rev.
Isaacs. Demund, of Belleville, N. J., was
the next pastor, and he sorved during the
war, resigning In 1811. Rev. Henry
Messcr, of Ferry county, Ba,, was
next elected, nud was pastor for
a year. Rev. Edwin H. Kevin
served as pastor from July, 1807 te 1870,
and he was succoedod by Itev. O. L. Ash Ash
cnfelter, of Cincinnati, In 1S71. He re
mained for ayear, and Rev. J.B. Shumaker
was olectod; he entered upon his duties
April 1st, 1873, He was snecdeded ever
two years age by Rev. J. W. Momlnger.
The work of the latter lias been very suc
cessful. Many additions have been madote
its mombershlp slnce he came here, and the
young peeple especially have manirosteu a
great Interest In the church work. At the
present tlme the church has a member
ship of four hundred and there are four
hundred and ten children in the Sunday
school.

fe rnied church began en Tuesday evening
with n largn attendance.
The epening sorvlce was cendurled by
Rev. Dr. J. M. Tltzel, pastor of
the First Reformed church, nud the Ser
mon was preached by Rev. Dr. F. A.
Gast, of Franklin nnd Marshall college.
He took for his text First Samuel, vll., 12,
as fellows : " Then Samuel '. took a
stone nnd set it botweon Mlzpeh and Shcn,
and called the name of it Eboneozor, nny
ing, hitherto hath the Lord hoi pod us."
During the sermon he paid n glowing
tribute te Rev. Keycs, the first pastor of
the congregation, and speke of the early
struggles of the church.
This evening the epening sorvlce will be
conducted by Rev. J. W. Momlnger, the
pastor of the church, and the sermen will
be preached by Rev. J. H. Sechler, pastor
or the Refermed church at Tenth and
Wallace streets, Philadelphia.

cialty company appeared nt Fulton opera
heuse last evening. The audlcuce was
large. This company has net been seen in
Lancaster for aoveral years, but It Is new
much better than when last seen hore. The
company sprang from the old Rcntz
female minstrels, which were under
the management of M. B. Lcavltt,
but the present party Is in cliaige of
Ben Lcavltt. It Includes a number
of very clevor people. The opening of the
performance last evening was called
" La Tesca's Reception," and It served te
lntroduce the majority cf the members or
the company. The ladles wero beautiful
costumes, which was the case 'hrougheut
the show, although at times they were
somewhat scant. Dashing Uoergto Blnke
looked charming In her male attlre and
made rapid changei. The Llttle Putnam
Sisters Hang well, although both
suffered from very' "bad colds, Maud
Bevorly openod the olio, nnd she Is
ene of the brightest serlo-cemlcs that has
been scen here in seme tlme while she has
a remarkably fine voice. Geerge A. Beeker
and Maud Leigh appeared te advantage In
the sketch " Assurance" Mr. Boekor is n
cemedlau of the Reland Reed kind and he
Is funny. He and the young lady sang
well together and thelr "Seng of Songs"
brought them numereus euceres. Miss
Pauline Batchellcr looked pretty nnd gave
songs and dances that pleased and Frank
Lester was comical In his negre " turn."
The host feat u re of the show was the act of
Le Clair and Leslie, n talented pair of
young actors who have Just returned from
a trip te Europe They are mimics, bur
lesque artists, character Impersonators,
Ac. Mr. Le Clair appeared In three female
and one male character, and his dress
ing wus elegant. His inake-up in the
character of Jltchtlteu nnd Imitation of
Edwin Beeth iu the character wero won
derful. Mr. Lcslle Is a very funny coino ceino coine
dlan, nud he gave imitations of people of
all nations, wblle he has n face that he can
put In nltnest every shnpe. "Antony and
Cleopatra," n burlosque, wound up the
show, anil In It Misses Batchellcr, Blake,
Beverly and ethers looked beautiful, whlle
Lester, Le Clair, Boekor and Leslio Air Air

features were the Nautch dancers, drill of

for the purchase and sale of tobacco. That
In pursuance of that agroement 3,450 cases
of tobacco were bought, all of which were
disposed of but 013 cases.

bank, Mount vllle National bank and Union

can have tn this tobacco Is the amount that
may ,be due them upon the sale and the
final adjustment of the account.
Mr. Newgass prays that Sheriff Burk Burk Burk
helder and the execution creditors be re
strained from selling, the tobacco adver
tised for sale te-morrow, that a receiver be
appointed for the firm, that the firm be
dissolved and that Shlndle & Stehman be
restrained from collecting any of the debts
or disposing of the assets.
The defendants have fourteen days in
which te file an answer. Frem present in
dications the sheriffs sale will be post
poned for soaie time.

Henry Steele, Jacob Wearer, Frank
Blecher and Christian Miller were heard
by Alderman Deen this morning e
several chaigea. These defendants are
bum who made their headquarters
tn the vicinity or Milten Greve.
On the night of February 3d the house of
Jacob S. Daveter was entered by thieves,
who effected an entrance through the cel
lar deer. A large let of edibles were
stelen. On the same night the house of
U. M. Wltmer, in the same neighborhood,
was also entered by thteves, who cut a
glass out of the window sash, opened the
faetener, raised the window and in that
way get Inte the house. At this place a
large let of clothing was stolen,
Tramps were suspected, ConstabloLong CenstabloLong ConstableLong
neckorwcnlln aearch of them and suc
ceeded in arresting the four parties above
named. They were still In the neighbor
hood when apprehended and were wearing
the clothing stolen from Mr. Winner's
house.
The aldermen returned them te court for
felonious entry, burglary and larceny, and
in default of ball they wert committed for
trial.

The Marsh reaper works at Mt. Jey
were sold te-day by the administrator of
James Marsh's estate The preperty was
purchased by Geerge Brown for 92,000.

The Bey Orator.
Ralph Bingham, the boy orator, appeared
before a large audience at the court heuse
en Tuesday evening and greatly pleased
his hearers. The selections he rendored
wero loudly applauded. The entertain entertain
ment was under the auspices of the Yeung
Poeplo's society of St. Jehn's Lutheran
church and a handseme sum was realized.
Democrats Carry Ulnghnmten.
In the Blnghnmlen, N. Y., election en
Tuesday the Democrats elected aldermen
In eight or the ten wards, overthrowing
the Republlcan majority or last year. The
Demecrats already have the mayor. The
Domeoratlo city ticket was elected by about
sixty majority.
