ten bv Commedore Maury te i relative In
New Yerk, dated May 12, 1844. At that
time Commedore Maury was superinten
dent of the naval obaervatery in this city.
If Commedore Maury had been alive and
present when Prof. Goede read thU letter
be would have been astonished te see what
the professor did. He turned and took up
a trumpet and talked into iu ue was
speaking net upon a piece of paper, but
upon a light wax cylinder. When he had
finished speaking he Inclesed this little
cylinder In a little pasteboard case or box
and mailed It te Mr. E. D. Easten, the
nreddent of the Columbia Phonograph
