If the Cubans are encouraged te revolt
by agitation like that of the Flerida sena
ter we win need te nurry up Dimuiug
war ships or Spain will net liave much
te fear and the scare may Iks all en our
side.
Spain has twelve armored andsev-enty-clght
tinarmered steam war ships,
and fifteen torpedo beat. The United
States lias one torpedo beat In course of
construction, and when all the ships
new authorized arc afloat, we will have
cloven armored and thirty-one unar unar
mered vessels. The heavy Spanish Iron
clads might call at New Yerk and col
lect the costs of any riot provoked in
Cuba by American agitators, and there
would net be much brilliancy in a policy
resulting In such a proceeding.
Twe women knocked down a nisn In
New Yerk and stele ten dollars from Mm.
The question arlses wbelher they wcre
Mgbwaymen or Mghwaywomen. The
presiding officer of a meeting Is aclialrman,
whether male or fomale, but if the same
rule applles te the highway robbers It
must also held for male washers of clothes,
who would be washerwomen in spite of
sex. JLIut the dictionaries glve "waslior "waslier
inn" and de net give hlghwayweman.
We can speak of a lady chairman, but it
would grate n gainst the fitness of things te
refer te a lady highwayman, or a female
highwayman. It would perhaps be hotter,
in these days of woman's rights, te retire
from this awful pur.r-le and speak only of
brigands, desperadoes and olher neuter
villain.
rnKsiDKNT HamhkeN went gunning for
ducks hut week, and of the threo kllleil by
the party he Is said te have slain one, and
also te have accidentally taketi the life of
a pig owned by an old colored man. This
touching Incident needs explanation and
detailed description. Did the chief oxocu exocu oxecu
tlvo of the United States mistake a pig for
a duck, or did he luiagine that a polar bear
was prancing through the thlckets of Old
Virginia. Possibly his gun was accident
ally discharged, or he' mny have slain the
wild Virginia razor-back dellberatnly and
for sport, bouause of the scarcity of ducks.
Jehn Wanamaker should get his guu and
Jein the presidential sheeting party, and
Mr. Ingalls should be persuaded te haunt
the neighborhood, as he nillit easily be
slain for a pig.

A cunteils flvo-pego pamphlet cemes
from Bosten with the compliments of the
author, David Thayer, A. M., M. D.t who
has wade the flight of birds a life
long study, "and desires te leave In
yeunger hands the result of his Investiga
tions." This result Is Illustrated in a
startling froutlspleeo ropresonting an 'terlal
railway." The pamphlet bears thotitle:
".)rlal railway for the exploration of the
polar zene and for air transit ever water
and land." The plcture shows three
huge kites or sails hanging, vertical
and rigid, high up in the sky from
three long reds or cables that run
from a vessel te a row of small
balloons. Dr. Thayer doesuot deign te ox ex
plain what these rigid sails and connecting
reds nre inaile of, but he doclares that the
balloons are only usodtekoop the kltes up
when the wind dies away. " If there wcre
always a wind thera would be no use for
balloons," says the student of bird flight,
and many a kite flying boy will agree with
him. Sliding en the Hues or reds that con
nect the vesHel and the kites Is a car In
which the crew of threo live and work,
shifting the angle of the kltes by means of
repes and no changing the dlroctien of the
motion of the strauge apparatus. The car
is carrled up and down its aerlul railroad by
the pressure of the wind en anether sail.
The Inventor quaintly ebserves thnt If
In couscquenee of the great vlolenco of
the sea any of the voyngers become sea
sick, thecur may lie Immediately carried
te the upper part of the railroad, near the
kites, whero It will remnlu beyend the
reach of the motion of the nea, and will
travorse llie Holds of air as calmly aa a
balloon. The yessel Is only intended te
act as a drag, and in crossing land or Ice
a car or sled go Is used. " The lurlal rail
road consists of an apparatus which is
acted upon by two ferces, the first of which
Is the-wlnd acting by oblique Impact upon
the surfucoef the kites, and the second the
resUtnuce of the naine ferce by means of a

This beautifully simple devlre was sug
gested by observing the light of sea gulls
In accompanying an ocean Htoamer during
along voyage against head winds. The
gulls seomed te be resting en their wings,
but easily gllcjed far ahead of the Kwlft
steamer, and circled all around It. The
sailing vossel operates en the same princi
ple, but with a dragse heavy that its pro
gress is very slew. The icrlal railway
raises a huge expanse of sail with Ju&t
enough drag te kcep it hte.nly, and the
small crew high above water. The iuvon iuven iuvon
ter hopes te nmkelt useful for rapid and
light Journeys of small parties by land or
son, and when he makes his trial trip lu a
howling gale due attention will be given
te his obituary.

A special from HprlngfleUl, Ohie, says:
Ciptnin Jacob Onrrett, of the Lageuda

last Saturday night announcing the sudden
death of his father at Sandusky. The cause
assigned for his denilse was an vplleptie
fit. Mr. Qarrett left at once for Columbus,
whero the funeral was te be held, and
waited the arrival of the remains. Arriv
ing at the capital city he and ethor rela
tives received the body which hud been
shipped In the care of a relative. The
casket was epened for a Inst leek, when
signs of life were perceived. Restoratives
were brought and a physician summoned,
and, in a short time, the supposcd-te-bo
dead mail was able te speak, ile was
transported te a bed, and new lies there
very weak and ill, but still alive, and his
