Oar Jehn'i Dinner Orator;'.
They had & New England dinner In
Philadelphia, last evening, nt the Con
tinental hotel, which was attended by
Yankees and Southerners, Dutch and
Irish, with Immense disregard for the
peculiar Idea of the gatheriugj and nt
which New Eiiglngd baked beans,
pumpkin pics, codfish balls, and like
Yankee Institutions, remained all evon even
ing as the only reminders that It was
a New England dinner that was being
given ; the speakers did net note- It and
no oue teemed te knew It ; the truth
being that it is qulte lmposslble In
this latltude te get up any enthusiasm
for New England rocks. Here, where
nature is se much mere bountiful, the
emigrants from New England can only
meet together at dinner te congratulate
themselves upon their escape- from its
cold and barren land into ene of milk
and honey, and feel that the lcsu they
say of the Jeys they left behind them,
the better.
At this particular dluner the chief
speakers were Mr. Breckenrldge, of
Kentucky, and Mr. Wunainaker, of
Philadelphia and thegcncral postefllro;
mere remotely from Germany. And
we are bound te say that this tlme our
Jehn took the cake. It gives us pleas
ure te de credit te merit whenever dis
closed ; and we are pleased te applaud
Mr. Wanamakcr for his tipcecli,
which was bright and witty. It
Is evident that Jehn Wanamakcr has
net been addressing Sunday schools all
bis life for nothing. In talking te llttle
children he has fallen into an untcrtaiu
lng way of dlscourse which proves well
adapted te after dinner oratory, where
there is no call te eay anything in par
ticular, but great occasion te say every
thing in a crisp and pleasant way.
Mr. Wanamakcr get along awlmmlugly.
He did nothae occeslou te talk cunt
and he did net even vontureen the
' borders of a fib until he reached the con
clusion of his remarks, when we fenr he
did trespass; and bear somewhat hardly
upon his conscience in declaring ".Sheet
the man who spends a cent or gives a
cent for corrupt elections" ; but " plant
men through the state as thick as grass
hoppers te see that there are fair elec
tions and a fair count."
That Is Jehn Wauamakcr's expression
at the New England dinner ; this being
the same Wanamakcr who at the last
election filled the money bags of Quay
mainly from the coffers of the rich men
of the city of Philadelphia. He would
have us think that he thought that this
money was te be used by Quay te sccure
fair elections and net te corrupt them.
What a Bwcotinneccnt cherub of a child
it is te be sure I And what a precious
Sunday school teacher f And what a
hand for Quay I
Our Jehn draws stoutly en our credu
lity when he puts himself and Quay
down as engaged in purifying the elec
tion of 18S3 with that Philadelphia
manufacturers cash: but he said it te
sweetly te thoe assembled Phllndcl
phlans and their guests that pcrchauce
some of thorn took it down. If they
cu keep it down, tlmlr digestions
may be marked geed ; a tttoruaeh that
can take comfortably lloaten baked
beans and Wauamakcr's tale of Inno
cence, Is as geed as that of any ostrich
that ever took in stones te digest.
But we will net think tee hard of
Jehn. A man en his lcgi at n dinner
table is' allowed lets of latltude; and, os
we have said, when he cornea te the
table from a long experience of Sunday
-- school oratory hu cannul be ex pitted te
speak as accurately 113 friskily, or any
truer than preaching.
A Merry Christinas.
A green Christmas is net a very rare
thing in this latitude, and It cannot be
aid te make a particularly full grave
yard. The croakers who are se ready te
quote this ancient saying should be
heartily discouraged and forced te ndnilt
that it was never intended te apply te
all tha earth from Greenland te Flerida,
and the line of Its territory must be
several hundred miles north of Lancas
ter, where a green Christum only makes
a full coal bin and gives comfort te theso
without fuel. This Is a tlme te be merry,
and any ene who does or says anything
calculated te threw the smallest shadow
en a community blazing with sponta
neous geed will should be kumiuarily
sat upon and suppressed with all the
vigor available.
Christmas is net a time for gloomy
omens but for cheerful hopes ; It is a day
for the most unfortunate te turn from a
dark past te a bright future, and no mat
ter hew straitened their circumstances,
ever' ene can at least have hope, and
no gift can be mere cheering.
Christmas Is a time when we all bend
down te the little folks aud take n les les
eon from them in faith In Sauta Glaus,
and kiudliucsa te oue another. The
sccne in Miss Baldwin's fcHoel,
as described In our news columns,
does net need much imagination te
make a touching aud beautiful Christ
mas picture In the mind of every reader,
and In many a family the children will
te-night awaken the better feelings of
thousands of men and women.
There Is Consolation.
Tberc Is some consolation in n green
Christmas, even If it be true that it be
& deadly one. If we bet ourselves down
as we Bheuld te extract all the comfort
out of the situation about us that it will
bear, wc will net find it hard te con
clude that a pleasant sky, a pleas
ant temperature nnd a dry laud
make very agreeable surreundlugs
ven at Christmas time ; and they ought
net te be very fatal ones, cither. If we
hed slush aud mud and rain we might
think that therewas particular danger
te our healths, as there certainly
would b great discomfort te us.
But we can get along very v. ell and com
fortably with such Christmas weather
as we are haviug tills year, nnd we need
net repine very much that the earth is
net covered with snow. We are likely
te hayc plenty of It yet; and If we de
net, we can de very well without
U. Itb net the greatest been te man ;
te ueya and girls, who are par-
py ju exurnu.
It Demands It!
If it be true as stated that the rela
tives of Mr. Gewcn are pushing a search
ing inquiry into the causp of his death,
they are doing well ; for In our Judg
ment there never was a death Hint mere
imperatively demanded Investigation. It
has been a great surpr.'se te us that the
police authorities at Washington have
been content te accept the theory of the
sulclde of a body that was hurried away
from the scene oflte death befere inquest
was had or official inquiry of any kind.
This haste te remove the evidences of
the deed in Itself pointed te crhne; ud
when the victim was a man of national
repute, who was an cnergotle opponent
of powerful interests nod secret clans ;
a man of great ability, honesty and
vigor ; who had never shown n sign of
mental weakness ; who was happy In
his family and prosperous in his for
tune ; who abhorred suicides and never
carried a pistol ; when this man was
found shot down by a pistol In his room
at a hotel, wherefore should there be a
conclusion of sulclde rather than assassination?
A rncsiiMAN of Wooster University,
Ohie, was forcible shaved by some of the
students a few dnys age, becatine he lind
refused te obey nn erder te roineve Ills
beard. It Is charming te reflect Hint our
home collego hn net been disgraced by
any of these Insane hazing porfermnnccis
and class rivalry takes no mero harmful
form limn an occasional struggle or rush.
The atl.dents of that obscine " unlverslty "
no doubt Imagined that ihcre was loll of
humor In thelr practical Joke, but Jokes of
the kind n re rarely worth smiling nt union
In scorn, and they would imve advertised
thelr collrge better by letting fresh imm
beards alone, nnd striving te develop
nintillncf-s, intiscle iind braltit.
This Is a bad day befere Christinas for
the trade. In Hlelghs nnd skates, but home
enn tell what the clouds may de in n dny,
and "old preb" has f.illed often In gueii.
leg cold simps.
