Tka Death of Mr. Getten.
It has been the spontaneous cemmeht
of every one acquainted with Franklin
B. Gewcn, upon hearing the prcsa news
that he bad committed suicide, that he
was the last man in ihe world of whom
they would have imagined such an end.
Mr. Gewen was of a heroic mould and
was se known te be by nil men. Ne man
of greater ceurage ever lived ; and his
mental strength was as conspicuous as
his moral fibre. Te the eyes of men
he bere a sound aud brilliant
mind In a sound and always
respected body. lie had no habits
that would sap his strength ; he gave
no sign anywhere of any weakness that
would lend him te seek death te avoid
trouble ; and he had no trouble that the
public ha9 cognizance of. lie was
hnppy in his family, affluent In fortune
nud successful In business. It li said
that he was troubled because the ma
jority of tlie intcr-stnte commissioners
had refused te require- the counsel of tlie
Pennsylvania railroad te preduce before
It the agreement made by that read with
the Standard Oil company; as Mr.
Gewcn had understood tlie commission,
when In cession at Titusvllle last sum
mer, te order the counsel of the read te
de at the hearing In Washington. Tills
is thecn'y reason given for Mr. Couch's
nuntal disturbance ; but Mr. Itlcc, who
was his client and who was one of
the last te (-co him, reports that
he found Mr. Gewcu in Ills customary
cheerful condition of mind. It was a
condition which was characteristic of
Mr.Gewcn, who was tee brim full of self
esteem te be worried by tlie rcbufTs of
fortune; a man who steed upon the
ruins of Reading, calm and confident, Is
net the ene te suspect of despair under
any circumstances or conditions.
And this is the man that the news
reports declare with great unanimity te
have committed suicide. If he did, his
mind apparently had fallen from its high
estate; and as quickly as thoroughly;
for at sundown of the day before his dead
body was found he had demonstrated
his sanity in cnccrful conversation with
n friend. Everything is possible, and it
is possible that Mr. Gewen became
speedily insane; but it Is net a
theory that 13 te be accepted without
evidence, of which tlicre appears te
be little, Fave that he was shot ; and
nobody else is known te have
been with him te whom the deed may
b)laid. It is said that his deer was
locked and his windows were fastened
down. It Is nlse said that an elderly
man bought a pistol of the kind found
near his body, at soveu or eight o'clock
en Friday evening, at a store situated
about a mile from his hotel. If this lust
statement should be "substantiated, and
If it should appear that Mr. Gewcn was
the purchaser of the pistol found lyiiifr
by his side, it would ullbrd very strong
evidmce that he hed slain himself,
cither by design, which might signify
insanity, or by accident, which would
show a felly well akin te Insanity and
as far from Mr. Gewcn 'h uormaleondl uermaleondl uormaleendl
tion. Te the fact that the doers and windows
were fastened, we de net h.-e that any
importance can be attached, as it was
quite possible, and even easy for anyoue
te have escaped from the room, leaving
the doers and windows in thlsondltien.
"Probably there was a traiiheni ever tlie
deer; aud If net, It takes little of the
burglar tkill te lock and unlock a deer
with nippers when the key is en the
ether side. The appartmeut Is shown te
have been lu a plaee that was net subject
te constant observation, by the tact that
the pistol shot was net heard. Surely
when a man may be slain by a pistol in
his room at a hotel without the sound
being heard, it is permissible te us te
suspect that there may have been a
murder, and the murderer may have
escaped unobserved, leaving a locked up
room behind him.
Se this ground for suspicion that Mr.
Gewen may have been murdered must
be added the btrange fact that no one of
his friends was permitted tesee his body
as it was when found; nor was the cor cer cor
ener called te tnke cognizance- of the
deed; but we are told that the hotel pro
prietor sent for a policeman, who hustled
ihe body te the morgue at the demand
of the man who sent for him, and who
doubtless liberally paid him for his extra
ordinary and lawlm precaedlng. This
hotel proprietor Is, we believe, a negre,
and may have been thus disposed te Ihj
hasty and unceremonious becaii'je of his
fear that the presence of the body
would hurt his business. Hut there
is enough that is btrange in these pro
ceedings te invite close investigation and
te cause question whether the testimony
ns te the conditieu of the body nnd the
room, which all cemcj from the hirelings
of the heufce aud an evidently pur
chased policeman, Is true.
Convincing proof that Mr. Gewen did
net die by his own hand would be found
in the condition of the wound, which
would show evident marks of the
powder If held within the range te
which n suicidal arm would le eon een
flued. One report fetates there were
no such marks ; and this. l)e-
teotlve Charles F. Miller tells a re
porter of the Philadelphia J'rcxs, would
conclusively show that the deed was a
murder. He bus tested this fact bv ex
periment, nnd shown that a man Tiring
a pistol Inte his own head behind the
ear must held it se close as te bcerch the
hair and till the skin with powder.
There does net appear te have been any
official observation us te this critical
fact upon the part of the Washington
authorities ; nnd in 'truth the friends
of Mr. Gewen Beem te have been
deprived of their Fcnses by the sudden
ness of the calamity and te have had but
the eue aim of hurrying his body te its
rest. Even a Piukorten detective, who
Went te Washington Imiir.c,! irlili 41m
couvictlen thaLtljp deed was a murder
aainai jur. uewen was the lest man
f, in me worm te commit suicide, seems te
, ' hVO yielded promptly te the demoraliz demeraliz
i in? innubin) of the scene aud te have
; concluded that It was n sulcldu nfier .
V .. ?bte we W'U ,H! rt'adv Weve when
. f( It U proved. We decline te accept any
kry N9 improbable without proof.
There Is no known motive for murder or
fet suicide ; but it Is at least as poslble
te Imagiue the ene as Iho ether. We de
cline the eulcide theory In the Interest of
the living man. If Mr. Gewen killed
hlnipclf, no man Is safe from himself,
and there will need te be a general Immi
gration Inte Insone asylums for safety.
Wcsee that Jehn G. Jehnsen, esq.,
who Is the most hard-worked lawyer at
the Philadelphia bar, rejects the Idea of
Insaulty, aud believes that Mr. Gewen
may have nctcd from some great, un
known and Irrcslstlble motlve. This
theory lacks but the motlve te make it
credible. It is mere sensible thnn any
suggestion of the sudden collapse of ene
of the greatest intellects in the land; If
net the greatest. "Who was there above
the horizon te dispute with Mr. Gewen
supremacy in the all-around qu nil 11 ca
tiens of greatness?
Walter Elliet, of New Yerk, went
through all tlie maneeuvres of dying of In
flammation of the lungs en Saturday and
having been pronounced dead was deeply
inourned for by his wlfe and relatives. Tlia
undertaker and his men arrived and pro

the astonished doctors say that he will
probably get well. Friends nnd fumlly

general public alarmed at this striking
ovldcnreof the case with which ene may
