Pennsylvania steel works, upon the sub
ject of the tarirr, which he thinks sorely
needs reforming In the direction of mak

has heretofore declared te commit
tees of Congress, nnd he has been as
steadfast In its declaration as he has been
strong in the argument which sustains
it ; and it Is hard te see hew it can be
gainsaid. Majer Bent, It is true, Is per
sonally interested en the side of free ere
by the fact thathls company has a great
ere bank In Cuba, and has erected
works en the Chesapeake te smelt
these foreign ores, upon which there
is new a duty of 73 cents a ten. But the
argument sustaining free ores is con
vincing, and would be valueless If It did
net show n benefit te the iron producer.
It is the fact that It is the Interest of the
country te sustain its manufacturers
that sustains the tariff". The pig Iren
producer of the seaboard is clearly bene
fited by free ero, which means cheajrcned
ero; and every ethor manufacturer of
iron and consumer of it is benefited by
the cheap iron which naturally results
from cheap ere.
And who is hurt by cheap foreign ero?
Hardly anyone even of the liemw pro
ducers, since the imported ere is a high

produced within the territory from
