Jehn W. Masen, commissioner of Inter
nal rovenue, has submitted te the secre
tary of the treasury a report of the opera
tion"! "of the Internal revenue service for
the tlical year ended June 30,1889. The
aggregate receipts for the last lineal yeir
were 130,891,431, or $0,7,958 mere than
the ncclpts for the previous year. The
commissioner estimates the collections for
the current year at 133.000.000. The total
cost of collectlemlurlng the past ducal year
was $l,!R',72n. a fraction less than 3.U per
cent. of the t m uni collected.
One thousand two hundred and llRy llRy
three violations, of Internal revenue law
have been reported by revenue agents
during the year, 059 persons have been ar ar
restedeti their information, property te the
value of $117,401 lias been reperted by them
for soirure, and fai.000 for assessments for
unpaid taxes an4 penillles. lui-numb r

rest of 2e0 persons and the death of one

The incrraie In the quantity of tobacco
and snuff and In the nnmber of clgurs and
cigarettes for the last flsral year ever these
taxed during the previous fiscal year was :
Manufactured tobacco, 11.535,030 pounds;
snuff, C27.CJI fount's j cigars, 22,058,090:
cigarettes, 288,WJ,200. The number of
cigars Imported during the year was 90,
087,407. -The value of the manufactured to
bacco Imported wns 870,353.
The number of gallons of spirits pro
duced from grain during fie year, 87,837,
450 gallons, shows an lncroase of 10,4U!I.'J90
gallons ever the product of the previous
year. The quantity, of ruin distilled from
molasses during the year, 1,471,051 gallons,
shows a decrease of 420,102 gallons from
the product of the previous year.
The quantity of distilled spirits in the
United States, except what may be In cus
toms bended warehouses, en the first lit y
of October, 1889, was 102,050,982 gallons,
this nuantltv being distributed ns fellows :
In distillery and special bended ware
houses, 62,074,200 gallons; in hands of
wholesalo liquor dealers, 15,255,882; in
hand! of rjtnil lqier dealers, 21,720,900;
total, 102,050,932 gallons.
The avorage monthly production of
oleemargarino during the 1 1 seal year was
2,972,002 pounds; the avorage monthly pro
duction for the previous year was 2,800,400
pounds, and the average monthly produc
tion during the eight months ended June
30, 1887, 2,711,82 pounds.
There was an Increase In the number of
