because of a lack of effort en the pait of

year the Weikingnien'a party was or er
ganizLd and stivrral weekly journals
espousing its pilnnples wcre estab
lished, but tliey wcre uet sup
ported, and hence were siiert lived.
In 1603 about the only paper of this
class existing was The New Cngland Ar
tisan, published at Dosten. It was tlie
official organ of the 'NVerUngmen's par
tj , but it seen went the way of the rest
from lack of support. There w as a slight
revival in tiiis direction in the forties,
and papers were established in several of
the prominent eastern cities, The Voice
of Industry, which made it3 first appear appear
ance in ritcliburg, Mass., being the most
noteworthy.
But these papers, like theso of the
rarlkr movement, and hke the purely
labor paper ever tince, had a precarious
existence nnd died young. Iu 1871
monthly and weeklj journals deveted te
fiecial interests weie quite numerous,
the machinists', the iien workers', the
shoemakers' and tlie coopers' unions
each having their efllcial journals. There
were rdse ether and mero geucral labor
papers established about this time, among

journalism came in the ears of 18S2
1630. during the time of the phenomenal
growth of the trades unions and the
Knights of Laber Towns of 20,000 in
habitants, and iu several instances of
less population, hail tlicir weekly papers,

notably The Leader, of New Yeikcity,
which was among the first te go when

Though many of these established duiing

voted te the class interests of distinct
callings nnd were issued by the author
ity of unions, nnd many of theso are still
being published; but the greater number
were for labor, whether skilled or un
skilled. Several were pronouncedly socialistic,
nnd three or four went se far as te tly the
