one the men. The only persons In the
office at the time ware Air. Kgglcsten and
Mr. Mallctte. Beth were busy writing
letters. Just as the clerk began counting
the money, a wull-dreed, geed-looking
young man came Inte the ofilre and en
gaged In conversation with Mr. Kggleaten.
A minute later another young limn came
in through a different entrance and Rpoke
te Mr. Mallctte. At that instant the tele
phone bell rang.
The clerk, glancing up and seeing both

stand yhat they meant, nnd went te the
telephone himself. Thcre was no 0110 nt

tion had been broken. The clerk returned
te his desk. The money wns gene. His
face grew ale, his knees shook, and he
could hardly control hi voice long enough
te ask Mr. Kgglcsten if he had taken the
money. That gentleman replied that he
