The Severe Training of the Ilomen Col Col
leeo neHcrlbcd by Father Cur ran.
The New Yerk Star lias the following In
terview with Kev. Dr. Themas F. Curran,
it Catholic priest just returned from Heme :
"In this country there are many colleges
where Catholic student are made priests,
the most notable belng at Nct.e Dane, Ml.
Charles', St, Jelin'sanu Fordham, and some
Jesuit schools. These institutions have the
best Instructors possible. In Heme, though.
Is where the leaders in the priosthoed
are taught. It takes nlne years for a stu
dent te tieceine a priest here, and te bo be
c me a Jesuit the student must have spent
eleven, or even twelve years In study.
When he enters the Jesuit novltiate he Is
given a period of two years te reflect en
the career en which lie is about te enter.
At the end of this time, if he still wishes te
persevere, he is allowed te tmke the first
vows of poverty, chastity and obedience,
lie then devotes tlve years te
study only, and soveral mero te
study and teaching. In some of the insti
tutions here the student has n very hard
time of It. Up atO o'clock in the morn
ing, black cofl'eo, a little bread and a small
pioce of meat for breakfast, study and a
very frugal dinner, mero study, n walk
and very, very light supper, mero study,
prayers and sharply ut 0 te bed. This
ceuVms of treatment, when adopted for
several years, kills many n premisli g
voting man. Hut go te Heme, and it is
ditrerent. It is dlllerent, because it is
about twice us hard te undergo the r'gUl
mede of life. "
" What students J re te t'10 Ami ric in co' ce' co'
lpge ?"
'The brightest men In the, various
dioceses of the country, two from each
diocese, I believe, is new the rule. They
de n it have te pay for their tuition or
support. They are put Inte n black gown
hich they are net allowed te discard from
the time they enter the college. Ne langusge
is allowed te be spoken, either at recitation
or in the dormitories, but Italian. The
f;reatest men of the Catholic church teach
u this cel lege the ropresentative students
from every nice in the erld. The students'
diet is a very hard ene te subsist en, and
the sleeping apartments are little rooms ten
by ten, with an iron cot, an iron washstand
Hnd bnMu and a brick lloer. Here it
is, rise at fi, prayers, attend services at St.
Peter's, where the pope says mass each
morning (or the students of this college,
bihI back te study. It is lectures end study,
little te eat, and six hours' sleep. The stu
dents of the. cellege are permitted te con con
verse v 1th the pepe qulte often. If n stu
dent graduates Irem Heme, if he succeeds
in living through the eourse at the Ameri
can cellege, that Is sulllcleiit te place him
in direct communication with his bishop In
whatever diocese he belongs. Ills know
ledge of the Vatican and the ether leaders
of the church at Heme is invaluable."
" Is the pepe failing in health?"
" When I ltl the American cellege sev sev sov
oral years age he was in excellent spirits
and health. IIe was nole te take long
walks in the Vatican grounds, but en my
recent visit I found him unable, te go alxuit
without the support of his servants. IIe
has dene the work of twenty wonderful
men in his eighty years of existence. It
has been study, prayer and fasting, at d,
naturallv, he cannot stand it miic'i len;r
lie reads for hours still, though in his
library, which he loves tu a mollier loves
her child. IIe has arrived at thai age where
he cannot possibly de the work he tries te
de, and the result is frequent attacks of
illness The mind is willing, but the body
is weak."
"Who would be likely te succeed Pope
Loens Kntltl?"
" There are many names mentioned in
Ihirepp, and even ene American cardinal's
name was heard often. Cardinal Maria
Parrechi, the pope's vicar general, is prob
ably the most ixiwerful man next te the
;eik) lu the ltemau church te-day. He
wus born in 18.13, mid when I.ee chose him
ns his lcar general he was gieu gieat
power. The organiJitieu of the church Is
practically in ids bunds te-day. He Is a
gieat man, and a learned man.''
