A Substitute rbr Oak Bark In Australia
nnd Its Cultlratteit Unrcsl.
Mr. Themas II. Merry, of Mentana, who
was the Culled States assistant eomnils eemnils
tinner te the Australian exhibition of IWS,
makes an Interesting rrtwrt te the state
dcwrtineul en a vegetable product which
etiibe used successfully as a sttbstltute for
therapldlv declining supply or oak bark
for tanning purposes. It is known In Aus
tralia as the " wattle, " and belongs le the
widespread family of acacias. January last
Mr. Merry brought home with him a wnall
nuatitlty or seeds, which he distributed
te frlends In California, where they are
alreadv attaining a vigorous and healthy
growth. "These trees are cultivated ex
tensively in the colenics of New Seuth
Wales and Victeria where they lend a
charm te the scenery, both by their fragrant
blossoms and oxeulslto foliage. The two
varieties most cultivated In these colonies
are the black wattle and broad-lcafed
wattle. Beth are Indigenous te an exceed
ingly dry cllmate and peer soil, and attain
their growth in about six years.
"The black wattle produces the larger
amount of tannic acid, and Is preferred by
the trnde 111 England, where Its market
value fluctuates from SMte fl2 ier ten,
according te the supply In the market.
Its tannine properties may be readily In
ferred when I state that hides can be
readily tanned In a bath of liquor made
from 'black wattle In forty-seven days,
wherens in liquor made from the best
Santa Cniez oak (the best found In all the
Paclllc states) the llmu required Is from
Heventy-llve te eighty days. The black
wattle contains from 30 te 32jsir cent, of
tannic acid, and the bread leafed wattle at
te S3 per cent. The oaks or the Paclllc
coast contain from 12 te 10 per cent, of tan
nic acid.
The bread-leafisl wattle, whllolldeosnnl
possess the tannic proKjrties of the black
wattle. Is a larger and handsomer tree,
and, belng a nntlve or the mountain slopes
cm withstand a greater degree el" frosty
weather. While 1 am cetilldcut that the
black wattle w 111 thrlve In the dry climate
and nrid foil of Arl.ena, New Mexico nnd
Texns, ns It Is already doing In the south
em counties of California, I am equally
confident of the success of the broad-leafed
wattles In the slates of Louisiana, Ucergla,
Alnbamn. Mississippi and Arkansas, espe
cially If they arc grown upon gravelly soil
away from the swiimps."
Mr. Merry urges that theso Australian
watlles be Immediately Introduced Inte the
United Stales and disseminated through
the agricultural department, as the incniii
of assisting the tanneries or the country, In
which se many million dollars are invested
aud which are liable te be impaired for
waul of proper vegetable chemicals. He
deems the Introduction of llicsn tiecs Inte
the Southern states a mutter of ast Impor
tance for thee reasons :
1. They will net grew neith of the Ma Ma
eon and Dixen's line.
2. They are natives of an arid climate,
and need comparatively lltlle moisture,
nonee they will grew en the treeless plains
el Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, lur
nlshing thocatlle breeders el theso regions
with an nbiiudance of geed fuel, after ro re ro
inevlng the bark, which ought te yield i'
te thoacie If properly planted mid guarded
while the trees are young and delicate.
3. They will be the means of strengthen
ing a great lmlustiy, both In the North mid
Seuth, by furnishing a new and unlooked
for supply of raw material, without which
that industry must iueUtiihly decline.
