"It's Jehn fell te the pavement!"
The men quickly descended and Jolnel
the gathering crowd around the flgure en
the sidewalk and wcre glad te hear him
groaning, as at first thought any Injury Is
lass tcrrible than sudden death. Hut wlieii
taey found the man Jjing with n broken
leg and a long splinter driven through his
. ether thigh, a pioce of the pole that had
broken the fall ana perhaps saved his
life, they doubted whether a fatal ending
weuiu nei nave been belter than
se much suffering. Already a peel of bleed
bad gathered and It was evident that the
man would bleed te death If something
was net dene for him at once. A n lit ex
amination showed the end of the bone pro
jecting from his right leg, but the thick
splinter in his left thigh added te the agony
of his position en the hard ivoinentaiul
made it Impossible te meve him with
out gMng feaiful p.iln. The wounded
man said nothing and bravely
tried te stand the pain, Iheugl'i
bla chalky face and blue lifts told of tlin
struggle. He was tee much hurt te think
much, but looked forward with n vague
horror te the moment whun he must be
lifted te the fleer of a wagon nnd must un
dergo the fearful terture or the longrlde te
hi home. He knew that he could net
stand it. He had been present when a
brakeman with a crushed leg uasleadinl
en the fleer or an express wagon and taken
te the hospital. The doctors said the man
died from slieck, but the carpenter and
ethers believed he died from wagon lloer.
That brakeman's agonized fuce a he
went jolting through the streets was new
befere the wretched man en the sidewalk,
among the shifting faces of his wife ami
children and the vivid memories that vemu
te dying men. He seemed te hear the
groans and cries of the niHii in the wagon
and recalled his bitter thoughts or the iicl'-
lect that made such inhumanity possible.
Just then he heard u little bell sharply
rung and heard seme ene sav : "' Here it is
w the ambulance !'
Jehn had been se busily at work that he
had been tee tired te read the papers for
several nights and though he knew that an
ainnuiance was te be bought he was net
aware that it had arrived and was In place
ataflre engine house, from which It could
be called by telephone.
A practical man across the sticet had
seen the scafTeld give way, and Jehn hud
hardly fallen borero the practical man wns
at the telopheno erdering the ambulance,
and the telephone exchange girl wan nt the
same tlme notifying the doctor.
The light but strongly built wagon tame
rushing down the btreet whlle the doctor
en the seat boslde the driver held his case
of Instruments and bandages In one hand
and rang the warning bell with the ether,
that all vehicles might get out of the way
quickly. "Thank Ged, here's the ambu
lance," said the old foreman ns he turned
with tears in his eyes from a rough
attempt te Btep the bleeding. The crew d
fell back te allow the chicle te come dene
up te the mangled man nnd the doctor was
aoen kneeling by hlsslde haidnt work.
. The deer at the back of the vehlcle wns
opened, showing two strctchers swung in
an ingenious way nt cither slde nnd ee
arranged that a badly Injured man could
be taken through the streets without
delay and with no Jolting or Jarring.
One of thesewas removed and placed en
the ground by the injured man, who was
new mere quiet under the intlucnce of n
drug. The bleed wns stanched, nnd bound
In many flrinly wound bandages, the man
was carefully lifted en the stretcher, nnd
then the strctcher w as easily nnd imlekly
placed in position in the ambulance, the
doers were closed, and physlduu and i.a
Ueut dreve oft" te the lntter's home. Te the
anxious wife the doctor said, "We have
your husband here, but he will pull
through all right, bewuse I get there in
time te aive him seme bleed."
But Jehn only niuttcred ns he was lifted
en the stretcher te his bedside, and easily
trausferrcd te the bed. "Thank Ged ler

Lancaster had another fire en Tuesday ar ar ar

was burned three years age, when the
property was owned by Adam Mlshllch.
The alarm for yesterday's fire was struck
from bqx W,at Duke and Frederick streeU
The flremenwere net slew in getting te

Heveral wagons wcre taken out of the
building, but four sets of harness, a rag

Next te the burned stable wero two small

The belleflsthat the fire, which broke

Applebach's house and impudently nsked
for something te cat, which was net given

and hn Is said te liave been scen near the

Mr. Lechor's building was allied at
about WW, and he has an Insurance upon It
eff-WOIn the Olrnrd company, or Phila

Mr. Hhober complains about the inanucrin

that the bale of rags were put together
with big deuble presses, and the
rags in them, which wcre loll Intact,
wero burned only en the ontslde. The
tlroineii for seme reason cut the wlrjs
