It Is new n llttle mero than a month slnce
the news of Brown-SequarcVs alleged
method of rejuvenating the aged reached
this country. The subject is one that nat
urally appeals te public Interest, since a
long lire nnd. a vigorous old age have
always becn among the chief object of
human desire, and consequently It has re
ceived a tmiUi greater share of newspaper
attention than is usually bestowed en med
ical topics. This It most unfortunate, for
the public discussion of such an absurdity
tends only te bring scientific modlclne Inte
ridicule.
The method is en its face preposterous,
its vaunted cffecti are Impossible and ridi
culous. Tt is opposed te all known physio physie
JflSpcal and biological lawn, and had it net
beea fcelVered up by the reputation of a
llrewn-bfquarU, It would scarcely have
bein heard of outside of the Paris seciety
where It was nroDesoJ. and no one would
ever have looked upon it in any ether light
than os the foolish cencslt of an old man,in
whose mind the dreams of returning youth
bad assumed the counterfeit of reality.
Sunported as it was, however, by the
welpjht of an authority hitherto respected
in the world or medicine, it was necessary
that it should be tested cautiously and In
the preper wav, and that the theory should
net be actually condemned until it had
been proven worthless as were his preten
sions extravagant. Ter unicflcctlng and
obstinate scepticism in matters medical Is
as illogical as unreasoning credulity.
The experiments reported by Dr. Loemls
are sufUUent. we think, te satisfy the
demands of legitimate- prudence. In fact,
it nns nircaay rcceiveu mero attention man
it lias dese ed. The results of theso ex
periments seem te show that the injected
materlnl may, in certain cases, act as a
mechanical btlmulant, but that is all ; they
full utterly te Minpcnt the extravagant
clilm-i of physical and mental rojuven-e-ii'enco
which have been jnil forward in
behMf of this methed.
What thcie experiments de net se clearly
show slnce they were conducted with a
proper legard rersurglc.il cleanliness Isthe
imminent rlslc of soplle jwlsening or of
tuberculeus Infection, te which the subjects
of such Injections are exposed iu the hands
of incautious operators.

Wlilte Ilorse was an Indian v he had a
fairly geed command of the English Ian Ian
