and such ills of humanity, we cxrlude
the populous Chinese country, where
they habitually prevail, from considera
tion! Our fletKi would be small In the
comparison, If we made It; but it is the
greatest we have ever suffered, or any
of our stock; and" we de net take Asiatic
nations Inte consideration In grading the
calamity.
When the day comes that our popu
lation Is ns dense as that of China, we
trust that our eughiecrlugsklll will have
advanced sufficiently te save us from
these dreadful jierlls of floods. What
needs te done Is te provide safe outlet
for the torrent. The Mississippi Is
our most troublesome stream; and
what Is needed there may be what is
needed everywhere. Appaicntly the
problem can only lie solved by provid
ing a depth te the lied of the river that
will take Its greatest water. We believe
tills was the plan by which Captain
Kads proposed te control the Mississippi
overflow. The plan heretofore used has
been the raising f the banks ; and the
effect has been the raising of the chan
nel. What is needed Is the deculng
of the channel ; and the engineering
skill that will accomplish this nt reason
able cost, in lieth rock and mud river
bottoms, will solve the problem.
