There was a great deal of exrltetnent at
the corner of West Klngand Water streets,
between ene and two o'clock this after
noon. Suddenly large stream of water
burst from the ground and ascended in
the air as though from a fountain. In
a few minutes the water began te Hew
from the ground at four or frte dlf
dlircrent places and crossed the streets,
filling the gutters en either side. The earth
seemed te bulge up for a spaca of ten feet
square, as though there was great force be
neath. At first it was believed that the
large Water street sewer had filled up and
burst, but It was known that the waler was
net hlch enough for that at the time. Fur
ther Investigation showed that Iho
water caine from the main which
passes down through the mlddle of
the street, and large quantities of the
city water was escaping. The lHJople of Iho

the repairs. In consequence of the great
break several manufacturers were limbic

up.
