Seme days age the sporting men of the
rltywere given the tip en a cock tight which
took place last night at a resort w htch has
become quite popular of late among people
who love this kind of sort. It w as In the
shape of a card which bore these words :
"Bird fihew, Thursday evening, May
10." These tickets were sold, and
last nlgbt betweeu seventy - flve nod
one hundred people, gathered st the
place, the location of which was well known
te all cock, fighters.
There waa no regular main, but live lights
were arranged for flOa slde. The men
interested in the birds were all from Ijui
tauter and for convenience we will
call one party the Hill men and the
ether the West End. The former
bad several roosters front Marietta
and a man from the long borough did the
handling of their blids. The lighting
began at ten o'clock and lasted for several
hours. The buttles were of the nlmrpwit
kind, and a great deal of money changed
hands. Although each side wen two lights
and one was a draw, the West End iioeplo
are believed tohave wen mere money than
their opponents, as their birds took the first
fight, en which there was much money.
Fer the first battle the Hill people put
down a black red bird of 6 pounds U Inches.
and the West End a dark red of ft Hiuuds
2 ounces. The fight lasted but ten minutes
when the Hill bird was killed.
In the second fight the Hill showed a
deininlck of & pemads - ounces, and the
West End a ginger of & pounds. The lilll
bird was cut se that he bled te death In
eighteen minutes.
The third fight brought eutudnik ml
from the Hill party, which weighed &
pounds 'i ounces, anil a black red from the
West End, weighing 4 pounds 11 ounces.
Thla waa a rattling light and the 11111 hird
wen it in fifteen minutes.
In the fourth light the Hill hud a white
deininlck of &peuuds I ounce, and their
opponents a block red of 4 eiitul 14
ounces. There was considerable trouble
ever the weight of the chick em-, hi the Hill
had had the advantage of m era! ounces In
each of the former fights. The arrange
ments were finally made and the fight bo be
gan. The deininlck had a wiug broken In
the first fly and Uu minutes later hud both
yea cut out. Inthhtcoudltlen a.bllnd asa
bat, be fought for three-quarter of an hour.
The birds became exhausted and although
they were breasted tlme and again they
ware uaable te continue the battle. It w as
therefore declared a draw.
The fifth and last fight was the best of
the eight. It lasted for fifteen minutes and
t'l Hill bird wen. It was betweeu a 4
pound 8 ounce dark red of the Hill, and a
4 pound 12 ounce cock of the same color of
the West End.
The crowd at the fight was coiimseU
largely of business and professional men
of thla city, who enjoy this kind of sport.
There waa ue dlsorder.aliheugh the feeling
OB the result or the fights ran high at
lime.

eksckr. There has been a geed deal said
about the atene furnished for street pur pur
peaea, Ac, and, the general opinion Is that
better atone can be secured and no doubt
will lie. Would It net be a geed idea for
the street committee te sea that all street,
te be Biacadamlted In the future should be
made by the street commissioner an 1 his
assistant? There are times when the engi
neer of the street roller has seme spare
time, and the street commissioner could
see that the streels te be macadamUed
would be done according ie the city regula
tions Instead of giving them out by con
tract and save that profit and especially as
very few streets have been niade of late
years that'glvc entire satlsfactlen.and some
times suits have been threatened. The
cost te superintend the work would be but
a trifle. The street committee should net
le dispensed with, however, te leek after
it. Would It net be reasonable te think
that we would then have better streets at
less cestT It would warrant te pay the
street committee a reasonable amount for
overy day spent Inspecting the work tlone
as well as te making their annual tour and
time te leek around for the best materials
te be used. Meney could be saved and
belter streets te travel ever secured.
