net that kind of a Heuse. The measure
gave them a let of books of considerable
value, which they could distribute te In
fluential constituents without expense
and with great glory.
The 130,000 gift enterprise has net one
geed reason te recommend it. The pabl U
catien of the first edition might seem te
be justified by mere or less sophistry about
the encouragement of science, but after
the state has once paid for the production
of the printed record of 'the wisdom
of Dr. Warren concerning the blrfs of tbe
state it would seem te have done i ts whole
duty te science and te the author,
no matter hew great the value of the
book. As Mr. Pearden said the state
might just as well print editions of
Dickens or of any successful novel.
That an effort was made te create the
great demand for tbe book there can be
no doubt for circulate praising it were
sent te every newspaper, and it all state
reports had notice as liberal the state
would have te spend millions te meet
the demand.
