This beat ii a wonderful machine, nnd is
the outgrowth of nn invention of Lionel
L.ukin, nn English conch builder,
who constructed a model In 1781.
It is co nicely adjusted that when it U
capslred by the ferce of the sea, it im
mediately rights itself. Thcre isin.the
keel a alugef iron wclghlngl,400 pounds.
In each end of the beat thcre is a solid
bulkhead of cork, and along the sides
underneath the rail nre arranged nlr
tight compartments. Thus it Li easy te
-understand that when the beat lies Lot Let
bam up ou the water there nre two forces
which tend te right hers the heavy iron
keel above, which has a tendency te sink,
nnd the nlr tight cemjiartmcnts below,
which have n tendency te rite The
beat is nlse nclf bailing. Tubes run
through the liotteui. At the top of
tlifse tubes are nlr tight valves which
yield te the pressure of the water from
above, but net from below, lust like a
pump s-tve that in a pump tlie valves
yield te the pressure from belew. Thus,
when the beat i filled with water, it
runs down through her bottom, but can
not run back.

of the towering pyramidal rock from

of this jock, in the center of the lower

Tlie Three Pyramids.' Been from a dis dis

three pyramids, but when you reach n
part of the lake near them you find they
number about a dozen. The water of
the lake is a deep and beautiful blue.
Waves at times rise te an astonishing

upon the shore, which aroqulte formid

The newest thing in dinner favors is n

In the mean time, no murderous ten

According te a medical contemporary,
Dr. Ueuvcneur L. Smith, of New Yeik,

startling facts in regard te pneumonia.
Br. Smith points out that the disease is
becoming werse evcry year, Increasing
rather than decreasing, both iu the man

from pneumonia there advanced from

in the New Yerk hospital the ratio of
mortality from this disease ii mere than
deuble (hat it was in 1S78. 'lilrty or
forty years age it was regarded ns seri

the alarm It does today. Dr. Smith id
rather inclined te bellove that the

treatment of pneumonia, has actually

of treating the disease at tlie tlme it was
less deadly have been abandoned for me

The majority of the metropolitan -po-llce
have ceme straight into the ferce
from the country. It is found that coun
trymen tnake the best policemen. Tlie
liern Lendener Is of very llttle use. His
nervous temperament would disqualify
him, even If his physlnue wcre satisfac
tory, and It is a well established fact
that In physlque the Lendener 13 sadly
deficient, ile Is net te be compared in
height, breadth of chest or muscular
tene with the avcrage "young man from
the country." Aa ler lib nerves, they
nre simply worthless. They are already
strung up te their full limit of endur endur
nnce. We have heard the same thing
eaid of 'bus drivers that Londen men
cannot stand the work, and that the
best drivers nre theso who have been
"brought up te horses" In seme coun
try stable. It Is the opinion of officials
well ahle te judge, that In tlie whele
of AVhltcchapel thcre could liardly be
found n slngle man fit te be a police pelico pelice
man. Tlie strong arm, the stout heart,
the cool head, tlie steady ncrve nre all
wanting in the Lendener; and the proof
of It is te lie found In the comparatively
small propeition of Londoners who are
admitted or, lieing admitted, can remain
in the pelice ferce. Naturally enough,
the recruits are chiefly men drawn from
the country round Ixmden. Kent fur
nlbtics a goodly number; 60 de Essex,
Hertferdshire, Sussex nnd Hampshire
There is nn nuthcntle Instauce of a con cen cen
stable who hailed from Orkney, but
probably be came by sea. With this ex
ception tliere Is scarcely a man In the
ferce who cornea from the country north
of Glasgow. That city absorbs all the
tall men who want te be policemen, nnd
se in their resnectUe districts de Liver
pool, Leeds, Manchester nnd the ether
large towns of the north of England. It
Is net till we get south of llirmlngham

At Havcily's theatre, new tlie Colum

club men nnd reunders, who had evi

The sulcide of Mrs. Johanna Boettger
In this place recalls n romantic story of
her caily life that Is a counterpart of
Tennyson's "Enech Arden." In 1813,
when Johanna was a maiden, she was as
pretty as a pink, and in her circle was a
belle. One day thcre sailed into the
hatber a Spanish man'-of-war, and the
sailors obtained leave te go ashore. Some
of them attended a dance ene night
where pretty Johanna was a queen, and
ene of the sailors, Jacinto Casariego, fell
In leve with her. After n brief court
1 hip the young sailor and Johanna be be bo
came engaged, nud w hen his vessel left
he premised te return again, quit the
sea and marry her. A year or mero
rolled nretind and Johanna remained
true te her Spanish lever. Then his ship
came into tiert again, nnd bis term of
enlistment having expired he was dis
charged and they were married.
Twe years of wedded bliss followed
nnd ft son was bera te Jacinto and Jo
hanna. Then the eung Spaniard longed
for tea again, nntl finally he packed ills
chest, went te New Yerk and enlisted en
beard a Spanish man-of-war then lying
in the harlier. Tlme rolled en. Jo
hanna, with her baby liey, heard nothing
from her husband. Time had dealt lo le
llcntly with her, and her maiden cliarms
h.ul ripened into womanly beauty that
drew many admirers ureund her. Among
them was llerr lleettger. He pleaded a
long time, but she was net sure her first
husband wa3 dead, and, though she fa
vored the honest, earnest German wooer,
she would net marry hlni until a certain
length of time had passed. That lima
came, and the steadfast devotion of llerr
lleettger was rewarded. They wcre
married and sevcral children blessed the
union.
Ten years passed, and ene night while
the family were at supper liaudsome
looking man in the uniform of a Span
ish naval elllccr appeared licfore them,
llerr lleettger was astounded as he saw
the mother of his children fall into the
mmsef the sailor and he cover her face
with kisses, liccevering, Mrs. Decttgcr,
or Casariego, explained matters te both
husbands. The first hubbaml was as
founded, but he renounced all legal
claims te his wife, and after a stay of 0
few days he went nway. His bon, the
young Jacinto, had lieen well cared for
by the stepfather, and his own father
left with the premiso te de something
for him. Nothing mere was ever seen
of hint by his w ife. He remembered his
son, heui'cr, nnd as he rese step by
rtep until he became a commodore in the
SpmUIi n.iy, he from time te time made
lemittanceu te his son for his education
nnd summit. Yeung Jacinto was a fast
